It's no secret that winter 23/24 has been off to a slow start. fortunately for me, our riding area has been getting hit with consistent spurts of snow making for 2.7 feet of snow in the fields as measured on 1/6 with more on the way this week! This is my 3rd time snowmobiling not on a tour and first time truly exploring the powder.
Miss piggy (my 2006 Polaris Switchback) appears to be running strong until we get into the deeper snow. I replaced the clutch spring and went with an Almond and swapped the 60 gram weights for 49.5 grams to get some more RPMs. The sled is still bogging and now we have a hypothesis that it is ingesting steam from when snow gets into the engine bay with the intake not being sealed very well. Ill be applying some weather stripping to try and fix that issue.
As far as the RMK 800 - I parted it out and sold it. I am realizing I need something newer to keep up with the crew and since I only paid $400 for it. I have already got my money back and plan on saving up for something nicer next season!

Their is definitely something wrong with that poor sled. I noticed even in your first video that it did not sound right. Is that thing fuel injected or carb? But I would check the spark plugs, check the compression. check the reeds, and exhaust valves. Or it could be something put together wrong in a carburetor or a throttle position sensor. depending on if its a carb or fuel injected sled. It could be a corroded electrical connection, or a weak coil, or you could also have an air leak somewhere. That old thing should rip. And also if you are worried about snow getting in around where the windshield is supposed to be like between your gauge console and hood ensure that is sealed as well because inside there is directly open to your air box. But when that thing is on the pipe it almost sounds like it is running on one cylinder. I wouldn't beat yourself up to much about the intake or clutching. That thing has another issue, Hopefully you get it figured out and you learn to love that machine because dang I am jealous of all your snow, and the riding area looks awesome! Nothing more frustrating than something that won't run right when the conditions are so perfect.

Thanks for the words of encouragement! I am diving into it this weekend since it's going to be blizzarding at my house and I am not comfortable riding in those conditions. It's got an aftermarket exhaust on it but definitely running on 2 cylinders. First start up of the week, it's definitely sputtering on 1 for about 30 seconds though so you may be on to something. I have an extra coil I may swap in there. Compression is good a little north of 135. Spark plugs are brand new and were a chocolate color when I pulled them. It is a carb machine unfortunately which has its own set of issues. I shined a flashlight in there and the intake is contacting the bottom plastic so there is an incomplete seal on the carbs (appears to be a non-stock intake) going to try and modify it to get a snug fit. For the top of the intake, I have some thick rubber to seal it with and I just welded an extension to the exhaust deflector to prevent snow from getting in there even more. Hopefully this is all overkill and one of the items mentioned will fix it, if not, I'll start saving for a different sled for next season and this can be my early season trail machine!
