Beta 390 is a long way from the little Templar! Both have their place but that Italian princess sure is pretty. Enjoy it. Thoughts on the 2 stroke? For me it's a question of terrain and avg speed, low speed technical trails 2 stroke, higher speed open trails then 4 stroke.
@dustinthegarage

I have my eyes peeled for a 2 stroke of some sort! I would love to pick one up for the right price. That clip at the end of the video is my only experience on a 2 stroke so I can't really make a comparison yet. Maybe if Ed and I swap bikes more often, I can get a better feel for it!

The B I G smile, and honest, self-effacing attitude which you bring to riding is admirable ... and should save you from getting hurt, someday. That dominant (overwhelming?) drivetrain noise makes me wonder if the chain might be tighter than necessary?

Ouch man that hurt😅 first get yourself a set of JIS Screwdrivers. Everyone uses a philipshead on those screws, but they are different they are Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS). Saves you from alot of broken and stripped heads. Sorry to ask but have you welded thin sheetmetal before? You cant just make a bead of weld like on a thick piece of steel. You need to tack it up and switch from side to side, so it doest get too hot. If you try to make a bead no wonder you fall through. I hope you didnt scrap the doors yet, they didnt seem to be too bad. For welding sheetmetal, go and watch fitzees fabrication on youtube, great guy to learn from! Dont get discouraged, I made the same mistakes as I started with the old cruisers.
@dustinthegarage
@dustinthegarage 3 месяца назад
Thanks for the advice! I ordered some JIS screwdrivers after hopping around the forums. I am very much an amateur welder and have not welding thin metal. I didn't throw them out but I am looking for a set of replacements because this is out of my skill level at the moment. The concept of tacking it makes sense. I have a TIG welder I can try that with but it's going to take some practice on my end to get this right.

FYI I have a titan 250 and the manual says to use 10W-40. I found it at auto zone in the diesel/motorcycle section. Specifically it’s the valvoline motorcycle 4 stroke 10W-40 full synthetic. You mention “break in oil” but all my research said that the oil that the bike ships with is just to prevent corrosion and you should change the oil immediately, so I did. I’m curious to know if you used a designated break in oil or if you were referring to the shipping oil.
@dustinthegarage
@dustinthegarage 5 месяцев назад
My instruction manual clearly stated it had break in oil and to change it after 300 miles. I used ON X off-road tracks to get to the 300 miles. I have used Rotella 10W-40 and 15w-40 oil in the past on my KLR650 where it worked OK with the other mods I had on that but not great. I am going to stick to the 20W-50 on this based on my previous experiences.
@Coco-Crisp25
@Coco-Crisp25 3 месяца назад
I just got a bike. I’m scared to start it with that shipping oil, let alone ride with it in there 😂. One of my first tasks will be changing it to gooood quality 4 stroke oil.
@RGHundo
@RGHundo 3 месяца назад
Just bought that bike 2 days ago. It’s smartest and most safe to change oil immediately. But since you’re not supposed to ride fast or far for the break in period, riding the shipping oil won’t tremendously hurt it unless you’re dogging the bike. I haven’t changed mine yet do to weather but mind you I only circled my parking lot twice after assembly. Best advice just put the 4t synthetic 10w-40 before any serious riding

GOOD on you! ` hope the Mrs. agrees/sees that you're havin' F U N ! While the handle bars are apart would be a good time to check/grease/replace the steering-head bearings. For a NICE lubricant that doesn't dry sticky (e.g. to lube the cables, bolt threads etc.) I like ISO-68; I buy a gallon (~$20) at the local farm supply store. Also, while apart, I would check the valve lash; it sounded clacky when you started it up. I would pull the axle bolts, CLEAN & smooth them (perhaps with fine sandpaper) and lube them with MARINE grease, which is fairly impervious to water (crossings) ... and re-torque them, CAREFULLY.

Nice ride out there. When you get the chance, can you list all the upgrades and mods you made with links.
@dustinthegarage
@dustinthegarage 5 месяцев назад
The only upgrade (and I think it's a necessity) was pulling out the stock sealed carburetor and going with an adjustable one. I purchased the Nibbi PE28 off of Amazon, link here: amzn.to/3UbJLCO and then trial and error-ed until it was running smooth. I found that the settings for the carb where I live (super dry and riding no lower then 5,000 feet in elevation) is a 38 pilot jet with a 115 main jet. I lowered the throttle needle down to the second notch from the top so that the needle sits lower in the carb. I also bent the tab on the float so that the float level was higher which really helped with snapping the throttle to full. At my riding area, I could probably benefit from going to a 112 main jet but figured I may ride more at lower elevations this coming summer so I am sticking with the bigger jet for now. I added an hour meter to help track engine hours and maintenance schedules and get engine RPMs. Link to that here: amzn.to/48P2QPK I bought a suspension wrench kit to adjust the rear suspension for my weight (unfortunately the front suspension has no adjust-ability without changing the springs and oil): amzn.to/42gUrBY I have a Slacker Digital Suspension Tuner to set suspension levels which helps with fine tuning: amzn.to/47TrJrW That's it so far!

@rider65

Just want to give you some riding tips bud... seems you're struggling a bit on the rocks and roots. A good way to improve the slow speed skills is to get a mtb and practice slow speed drills. First skill is to learn static balance. Then slow speed turning-maneuvering followed by hip and arm/elbow positioning. Learn and practice these skills and they will help your trial riding immensely! . Loving the bike btw...
