This is part of a series which shows how to have clematis in flower in the UK throughout the year. I have started with Large Flowered Hybrids and will produce more in this series each season to show the clematis in flower in my garden and give advice about how to grow and care for them. additional information can be downloaded from my web site kenblackclematis.com

It is a real joy to see you well and back! Ever since we bought a house with our own backyard, I've dreamed of having a few clematis. Your videos were the major source of information and inspiration, so well presented. Starting from last July with a dozen of varieties now I have 60! And despite the lack of space this is not going to be the finish, some more are ordered already :)! I love each and every clematis I have but the ultimate favorites so far are: Utopia (such beautiful and long blooming!), Hanajima (little elegant beauty), Golden Dream (the most pleasant and unique scent of a flower; a real surprise was discovering Rooguchi has one too), Purple Dream (huge fantastic looking flowers), Purple Surprise (beautiful star shaped vibrant flowers), Princess Kate (simply, beautiful) and Taiga (probably the most unique shape and color combination). Some are planted into the soil, others - into termo-containers which I can move to desired places. Your video "Early Spring Clematis at Adswood" has inspired me to combine Purple Surprise, Cecile and Albina Plena in one elongated container, they have already grown up nicely and look perfect even without Albina blooming yet! I share my clematis photos on Facebook and Instagram and wish to encourage others to grow such beautiful plants. Forgive me for long text, but I can't withhold my excitement. I owe many thanks to you, dear Ken! Looking forward for more videos!

I was really pleased to receive your comment. Wow 60 clematis already. You will be making videos next! Your collection sounds interesting and your desire to experiment with different combinations is inspiring. The only one of your clematis that I don’t like is Tiara. It is just too unnatural looking for me. But that is one of the beauties of clematis. There are so many to choose from that there will always be ones that appeal to some but not others. My next video will be featuring late summer varieties, many of which are out now, so I better get filming. If there are any particular topics you would like me to cover in future please let me know. I look forward to seeing your clematis on Facebook Many thanks Ken

@@kenblackclematis8272 Thank you for kind words. I am on the very beginning of learning clematis secrets, so I don't know how much I don't know yet 😁. So far they are doing rather well, save a few exemplars. One is stopped to grow altogether after flowering (Hakuookan) and it looks like it does not have any visible alive buds on the stems left. I shortened the stems a bit and am waiting for it to wake up. Some have brown spots appearing on leaves - I'm removing these leaves and watching if situation does not get worse. And, lastly, Pink Dream seems like needing a lot more of shade, because leaves look burned for both plants I have, although other "Dreams" clematis are doing well at the same locations. Next week I hope my new order with 12 more clematises will arrive (do I need a psychologist already? 😂 ).

I have a handful of i believe himilayan clematis cuttings that have seemingly made it through repotting.. on to over wintering them. It could get below freezing here, if so I'll be putting then in a shed in plastic tubs.. hope they make it!! Haha. I love your videos, thanks!

Pls pls make more videos about how to deal problems people may encounter. Like why they die a year or two after flowering so well. Also is it possible to over feed? Will they come back after being over fed. I’ve purchased so many over the last five years (uk) and lost about half. Or they can be slow to grow or smaller than thy should be in flowers. I have clay soil
@kenblackclematis8272
@kenblackclematis8272 2 года назад
I am sorry to hear that you are having problems with your clematis. You might try to use a large pot with the bottom taken out. Fill the pot with good but gritty compost and part sink the pot into the ground. That way the clematis will be in good and rich compost but can get into roots into the clay, which holds nutrients very well. If because of the clay your garden is very wet in winter you may struggle to grow early spring clematis because they don’t like wet conditions too much. I suggest you buy some viticellas ie late flowering clematis. They are generally more resilient. What are the names of some of the clematis you have lost?
@cliffcoates7982
@cliffcoates7982 2 года назад
Hello Ken, Fantastic video, well presented and lots of fantastic information. I want to buy some viticella clematis next spring to grow over an arch. Do I treat these as large flowered hybrids and plant deeper than in pot or do I plant in soil at same level as pot. Sorry I am a little confused with this one. Many thanks and please make some more videos, especially an update on your seed sowing in pots and bags and vermiculite and bag. So interesting, can't wait for the results ha ha .
@kenblackclematis8272
@kenblackclematis8272 Год назад
Hi Cliff. I plant viticellas at the same depth as in the pot although some people plant them a couple of inches deeper. There is no evidence that viticellas benefit from deep planting. Why don’t you download the chart I have done on growing clematis. It includes planting. It can be found on my website Kenblackclematis.com

Hi Ken, lovely to see you... welcome back! I will be following your video's as I am just starting my collection. My Duchess of Edinburgh was doing great, lots of blooms, its 3yrs old now. Planted southern exposure and has partial shade by 3pm. It suddenly is drooping its leaves and the flower heads are turned down. After a heavy rain fall yesterday, I thought it needed watering but not at all, the leaves are browning and greyish flowers... what has happened to my beautiful clematis... any ideas Ken... much appreciate!
@kenblackclematis8272
@kenblackclematis8272 2 года назад
It is difficult to diagnose without examining the plant. However, there are several web sites that give information about brown leaves, and it can either be underwatering or overwatering - not helpful. Have a close look at your plant and examine each stem. Look for signs of mechanical or pest damage. I would guess that your plant has been under stress and the effort required to produce buds may have been too much for it. You could cut the stems back to where the leaves are still green and see if they regrow and produce flowers later in the year. From memory, I think that the Duchess has a double white flower and it may regrow to produce only a single flower later. Sorry that I cant be more help.
