another great video Ken.I first learnt how to take cuttings from one of your previous videos some years ago now,and they are all romping away just great!.So now my whole family each have a" Broughton Star" doing well in their gardens ! X

@kenblackclematis8272 Год назад
Well done. Broughton Star produces good seed heads so why not collect seed this Autumn and try raising some that way. They will not be absolutely trues to the parent but who knows what you may produce.

I've learned the hard way how fierce cold winds affect clematis; it's a speciality of this area. These lovely plants are pernickety; sulking, suddenly dead or un-dead, or flowering for months in a corner. I'm hooked, know my limits, loving your beautiful videos.

Many are pernickety but as you imply, this adds to their charm. I am glad you like the videos.

Hi Ken, thank you very much for your video. I've watched the other videos on your website too, which are very informative and helpful. I love clematis and I have managed to squeeze a few in our little garden. I have a montana Ruben tetrarose planted over 3 years ago. It was covered with masses of beautiful flowers in April and May last year. Even in Autumn it still looked healthy and happy with crimson foliage. However, it is already April now, yet there isn't a single live leaf or flower bud or any sign of active growth. Outside of the stems is brown, but it's green inside so clearly the plant appears to be live to me. I wonder if you could shed some light on what is happening to my Montana. It's sitted in a southwest facing corner. The soil has reasonable good drainage and the root is kept cool as there is a low growing evergreen shrub at the foreground. I wish I could send you a video. Thank you very much in advance. Also I would love to visit your beautiful garden to see the spring flowering clematis and perhaps buy some clematis plants too but we missed the open day today, is it possible to re-arrange for another one over next couple of weekends? We live in the South of Warrington. Thank you again. Xiurong

Just lovely! How do you remove old growth without killing next year's growth? Do you eventually need to prune hard and have a flowerless year? Thank you!
@kenblackclematis8272
@kenblackclematis8272 4 месяца назад
If you cut back a montana immediately after it has flowered it has time to put on new growth before shutting down for the winter, so you will not lose next years flowers.

Hi ,i just bought Nelly moser clematis seeds. My question is ,can you germinate them in the bag with vermiculite and how long will take to see seedlings?Thanks

My Montana is about 16 years old , how long will it survive before it needs replacing.

What an interesting question. The answer is that I don’t know. Montanas can last for many years, for example there is huge montana Wilsonii in Hergest Croft Garden in Herefordshire which was allegedly planted by EHWilson the plant hunter after one of his trips to China. He died in 1930. Now whether this story is accurate I can’t say but I know that the plant is very old. Montanas can be reinvigorated if they get too woody by cutting down main stems to about 3 feet when flowering has just finished and new shoots will appear on the remaining stem. I usually suggest that people should not do this to all stems in case new growth does not appear. I prefer people to cut down only half the stems and, providing new growth does appear the remains stems can be cut down the following year at the same time. Hope this helps Ken

What is your opinion on hardiness of Mayleen? I see that it is rated to USDA zone 6. Has it survived late freezes in UK where other montanas have succumbed?
@kenblackclematis8272
@kenblackclematis8272 Год назад
For the last 20 years my Mayleen has survived a variety of Winters, but in the UK they are often more wet than very cold. This last winter was very wet then very cold and Mayleen did not survive, nor did Marjorie. The ones that survived were all i bottomless pots with lots of grit for drainage.
