This is a hike just outside of the park boundary. In the video I said I carried 2 Liters of water with me. I had 1 Liter with me (but didn't drink any). In addition to the equipment I listed, I also had a scope and a satellite communicator. Temperature was 25F in the morning to 40F at the end of the hike.
Here are some Amazon links to the equipment I use. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

You’ve taught me how to navigate in bear territory. After spending most of my life being in complete and utter terror of grizzlies especially, but all bears (my friend was attacked by a predatory black bear several years ago as she was hiking through a clear cut.) Harrowing story. Thankfully, her great Dane engaged the black bear (after running away.) He returned in full-steam, after her screaming and gave her time to get away. Dog was fine. I thank you for your help, with my ignorance and fear.

What a great showcase Stan for life in grizzly country. I agree with you, these animals only attack when they are uncertain of your intentions, and think you mean to harm their cubs. otherwise they are peaceful animals that have no ill will to humans. My pal once saw a griizzly in Montana that literally posed for photos and would often make friendly bleating sounds for food.

Timothy Treadwell obviously took his bear obsession too far, sadly, ignoring the dangers which ultimately took his life and his girlfriend’s life…Stan is more cautious and aware of the dangers and knowledgeably hikes these beautiful areas! As with life, anything can happen but in the meantime, I enjoy these treks with the calm Stan!

Love your videos Stan! I was at the South Entrance to Yellowstone this morning (this entrance has not opened yet) and spotted a black bear digging in the meadows along the Snake River just outside the park entrance. Yesterday spotted a juvenile grizzly near Moran in GTNP. Your hiking protocols have done much to influence my preparation and actions on the trail. Thanks so much for your excellent videos!

Hi Stan, Love your videos. They're relaxing. Aside from size, how can you identify a male grizzly from a female from being some distance away?
@StanMills
@StanMills Год назад
I will see this bear with a female within the next week or so. I have been seeing this male grizzly for the last 8 years, every year in this area. He is a huge grizzly and a great bear to see. Hopefully he will continue to survive for a lot more years.
@markusschmied2237
@markusschmied2237 Год назад
I wonder why Stan suggests walking quietly so as not to scare any bears. Everywhere you go in "grizzly bear country", signs advise hikers to make sure they make enough noise to give bears the chance to notice them and retreat safely (attacks usually being the result of a bear being surprised)...
@StanMills
@StanMills Год назад
Then do that if that is what makes you feel good. I am about God's wonderful creation and treating animals with respect in their home. It's not all about ME.
@markusschmied2237

@@StanMills OK. God's creation all right (inspires me with awe as well!), just seem to be two different aims - watching wildlife (in your case) and hiking safely (in the case I cited). No harm meant; got your aspect now and can clearly understand it.

Curious about the new permitting for videos? I noticed this was a new one. Enjoying all your videos.
@StanMills
@StanMills Год назад
Like in everything, people go way overboard on anything they think may affect them. The intent of the permitting is not to infringe on your 1st amendment rights or to stop normal individuals from doing what normal people do hiking in the park. It is for film making like weddings, movies...where they have equipment that can interfere with people visiting the park. Common sense.
@billjayne7474
@billjayne7474 Год назад
Intent is difficult to interpret and regulations take on a life of their own after a while. Moreover, regulations often (always?) have unintended consequences. In a career with the VA I wrote regulations at times and I can attest to the fact that unintended consequences occur and program managers can interpret the regulations in ways that weren’t intended.

So you don't have to be concerned with a bear on a carcass, like a winter killed elk? You're walking in the dark.
@StanMills
@StanMills Год назад
Yes that is always something to watch out for. But there is all kinds of evidence and indications around when there is a carcass close by. Lots of wolves an coyotes.

Stan - maybe an obvious question - but why the bear spray in two locations on your pack? Do you keep it in a shoulder holster in case you have a close encounter? (Ever used it?) 11:18 I thought you said ‘texts’ - I was gonna say - my memory of YSNP: texts are not a concern…

Wow I wouldn’t consider that wise. Traversing a known grizzly bear habitat, seemingly with no firearm (hopefully I’m wrong on that), in the dark, in the spring when bears are starved and guarding winterkill, with one of your two insurance policies tucked away useless in your pack. An encounter is imminent. Better hope the wind is blowing directly at the bear when you attempt to spray it. But it won’t be. I write this only to keep the uninitiated doing something half this stupid. I wish you luck.

Stan, your a good woodsman but pretty naive to think grizzlies are going to put up with you walking on the trail or cross country and coming up on a bear feeding on a carcass. I’ve spent my entire 70 plus years working in the woods and recreating in the outdoors. There’s a reason the park service works hard keeping folks away from dangerous critters. You should hear yourself talk about the dangers of bears. I hope it never happens but I would not be surprised if you have a situation or dangerous issue with a grizzly. Your spreading bad behavior’s to the inexperienced. Be safe, from speedgoat
