I think the scariest part is the fact that the bear is contemplating eating you alive while it’s just standing there so calmly. Also the fact that it’s drooling. Lol
You don't _challenge_ brown bears... You're specifically supposed to use a soothing voice with them. Even gunshots will just piss them off, and if you decide to actually _shoot_ one in this same type of circumstance you better be a damn good shot and hit it's tiny brain-stem, people have put six .44 mag slugs in brown bears skulls and _still_ got eaten. They are monsters when pissed.
Have you ever seen the injuries boar bears regularly inflict on eachother? The bear did not drop instantly, unless it was poisoned by the arrow. Yes, six [6] slugs to the skull and the man got eaten and partially buried... Then the bruin finally died 20ft away...
They followed the number one rule, don't run. I learned a lot from this scene in their movie, 8 years ago. Now I am a Alaskan bear guide and encounter bears almost every day in the summer. If they would have taken a few steeps towards the bear clapping or slapping their leg, video camera in hand, the bear would have decided to leave earlier. They did not have a gun and didn't need one. Nice video.
Nah! That bear knew that however hungry he was, he didn't have an appetite to tackle that woman's balls. If the husband had have kept talking for longer, Yogi may have opted for a snack.
People. Read this really really carefully. These people do not expect the bear to understand English. The words they use are to help themselves stay calm and focused. The bear WILL pick up on the sound of what they are saying, and their body language, and by staying calm and focused they greatly increase their odds of nor getting ate.
Rick OBrien, Yes, if the bear went for an attack they would have had a very bad day. But in this case you could see the bear was not going for the attack but it was seeing what they would do. If they ran, it would most likely have chased and attacked them as prey. Standing your ground, making yourself big and talking loud is the best thing you can do in this situation. It's a bit more than just luck. And yeah their guns probably were, just for precaution. People saying they were retarded, I would like to see you in this situation and you will most likely be dead. And quite frankly I wouldn't really care if you are that ignorant.
@@user-xk9td5kk3p screaming probably doesn't do the trick. Even if it is manly. ;) Btw, I wish it would work. I would find that much easier to do than having to sound calm. It's always bothered me that calm is the recommended approach. It feels too passive ...
That entire situation could have turned deadly. As a matter of fact, if it were dusk or completely dark that Bear May have charged and ultimately killed.
@mike creigton this salivating the bears do it when there is two alpha bear fight to take over its like show of fear camels do that to and other animals so maybe he saw them as reveals whom they enters his territory not as meal
This friendly RU-vid video could have turned into police evidence that would have never seen the light of day... just like that other video with the "bear whisperer"
I think they had a gun. I heard them readying and a clicking when the bear moved closer. That's why they said "good choice" and "you don't want to do this."
@@memoryrinehart Doubt all you want, 11+ years of making vlog videos on RU-vid has me quite acquainted with ambient sounds from a camera; it's the zoom being toggled making the clicking sounds, that's not a magazine going into a gun.
No this old woman and the man wanted to be on jewtube and almost got more than they wanted but old meat on liberals must taste nasty so the bear let them slide. Hahaha
that is one Hungry Bear.!! an adult bear , that is Not a protective Momma , will almost always choose fleeing before attacking. So the fact that this very hungry bear came straight at you , head down , drooling excessively .... GOOD LORD ... this Brown Bear was seriously thinking about it.!?! Which also tells me that he's Extremely Hungry. But thank goodness his own survival instincts out weighed even a Springtime Hunger.!! Not to take away how calmly and effectively you both handled it. And there's no denying that this bear ...on this day...was giving his options some serious thought. And had you not known exactly what to do in this position , then he likely would have attacked ...causing death to you or him. Well done.!!
@@USMC6976 , actually it is more effective in stopping attacks. Do your research before spouting your b.s. ...."Its better to keep your mouth shut and look stupid then to open it and prove the point"
@@76mitch76 You should follow your own advice: "Its better to keep your mouth shut and look stupid then to open it and prove the point". Next, bear spray MAY chase the bear off at the moment. The bear is still alive and able to come back. I put it down with a gun, it's not getting back up to come back later. Not being able to come back later IS makes guns more effective. There has been instances where bears ran through the cloud. They think some bears, especially those that have been sprayed before may have learned to "hold their breath". There is also evidence that bears will return after being sprayed and continue to hunt. Now go and do your own research and stop thinking you know everything.
14 year old video, and still a better capture than a lot of videos today lol Even though luck was on your sides, well-handled. Great composure and courage!
Bears that recently wake up from torpor are usually starving and desperate, so they'll pretty much charge at anything that they can get their paws on, like moose, caribou, elk, wolves, squirrels, mice, lemmings, cougars, and humans.
For those of you saying the couple did the wrong thing, what exactly do you think the RIGHT thing would have been? Once a bear knows what you are, and they keep walking calmly toward you and drooling, one could be forgiven for thinking the bear has dark intent.
At the start of the video, when she says "hey you take this" idk if she's speaking about bear repellent or any tool they have to defend themselves, but i love how the dude calmy says "nah you can do it" and she imediatly sounds more confident. He's not letting her be overwhelmed by the initial fear she had. Props.
Cafe Terreur If either one of them had been on their own, I think it would have been a different story. The man I felt was too blaise about the bears potential attack. The bear politely left, but another one might not have been so easy to convince to leave especially just out of hibernation. One bear is easily capable of killing two people or more.
I like how they said "Bear you don't wanna mess with us." Bear: "Yea, with those high caliber guns in your arms, no probably not, but I thought about taking a chance anyway and ripping you from head to toe."
It's good to fire a warning shot, but just make sure you fire it into the air, not at the bear. You want the bear to see you as dangerous, but if it thinks you are attacking, it may charge.
Well played, by geez that was close! I think your decision to move apart slightly making you look larger was a good one, as he looked you over. Man that was about to get western
What a beautiful animal. The bear blended into the dark forest perfectly. The heck u was food. The bear's mouth was tasting you in its mouth. I am glad all went well.
Vvv Bears are fierce when attacked with a gun. They take the shots and go In to maul the attacker. Both were lucky. Especially, a hungry bear like this one would go in for a fast and brutal attack and not care about pain or injury.
Yeah after not eating for 5 to 7 months a large male grizzly bear will be so hungry that it'll ignore the pain and just go for the kill, that's what they do after Torpor.
I love how you can literally see his mouth watering and drooling and all they’re saying is “You can go away. Leave us alone.” And “you don’t wanna do this.”🤨
great job having a respectful bear encounter! that made my heart beat faster all the way in Vermont, and made me even more homesick for Alaska than before. I can't wait to see your entire film.
That bear was thinking about making a meal of you, luckily he decided different. This was not a bear deffending cubs trying to scare you off this was straight up a bear sizing you up, i think talking louder and making more noise is best but the calm tone worked here.
I didn't write that it is evil to kill bears in self-defense because it at least mostly isn''t when committed/done in self-defense I wrote *"Dead bodies should not be used as evil and selfish trophies."*
Spring? With snow still on the ground must mean he just awaoke from hibernation and is likely extremely hungry. He looked to be contemplating whether to go for it or not. Would be cool to know what it was thinking or feeling. It looked like somekind of decision making.
Omg that was a scary encounter. They probably saved their own lives by remaining calm, speaking in a low firm voice and not running. By staying calm, they kept the bear calm. When you hike in bear country do some research --okay, do a LOT of research. Know how to understand a bear's body language and how to use your own body language to de-escalate a bear encounter. And always carry bear spray and pray you never have to use it.
@@end8316 with all the shits that we eat everyday i think we are not low on calories xD and also try to tell that on a bear charging at you 😅 at hard spring they dont even care if u are low on calories or a fat nice meal..you are just a meal 😁
Anon Anonymous Bears are definitely not stupid. And you can never be sure you kill a bear before it can harm you. Even with bigger hunting calibers there is a big chance that even after a fatal hit the bear will continue charging at you leaving you to be mauled to death. Also it is pretty easy to miss a bear running at 50 km/h. When he is close to you, you are straight up fucked. Also bears are normally smart enough to back down from humans, as you see in the video. The bear was starving, you could tell from him drooling and that it was shot in spring ( he awoke from his hibernation, didn't eat for a few months) but still chose the option to just flee the scene, and there is good reason for it. He could win the fight easily, but gun wounds would kill him in the long run.
Colin Walsh Nah, the world isn't better off without bears, but I don't expect your dumb ass to understand the dynamics of biodoversity. On the other hand we can all agree that the world is better off when there are less humans, so why don't shoot some of them on sight? /S.
“Yeah we’re big”.Basically everything the bear hunts is either stronger or bigger than us.It’s not a matter the size or strength u r,cause u can’t outmatch that for a bear,it mainly a matter of how annoying u r,and whether the bear feels like going through the bs
@@NVSC10 A MUCH smarter move is to cap off 5 rounds in 2 seconds right over his head from the AR-15 you ALWAYS carry with you - in spite of being so stupid a to be out walking in the Alaskan bush in April 😊
Very lucky in that situation and y'all handled it beautifully.Talking to that bear in the tone you used and sizing yourselves up probably stopped it from attacking.Looked like it thought long and hard about making its first meal after hibernation.
@Bistra: Yes, speaking is a HUGE safety tip. Large groups are much safer in part because they are noisier than small parties - the bears hear them coming. The researchers who review scores of bear attacks and close calls say that humans have better outcomes with pepper spray than with guns. Obviously, the outcome is better for the bear, too. And 14 ounces instead of 6 pounds. Erin and Hig travel very light by necessity - even with their kids along (like this summer).
@Bill Randall What fraction of gun owners can put 4 rounds into a grapefruit-sized target, bobbing up and down and left to right while moving 30 mph towards you? When one come out of the brush, you've been hiking for days and don't have your AR-10 in a low-ready position at all times. I've seen friends drop smaller bears with a single .308 shot. Like it took 10 steps and fell over. And other times seen bears soak up aimed, non-rushed shots from a .308, a 30/06 and another time a 300-Win Mag. For those who choose to rely on firearms, I've long pooh-poohed any handguns (and suggested the State of Alaska recommendations of no less than 300-Win-mag or 12-gauge rifled slugs), but have recently started to reconsider the newer option of 10mm hard cast bullets in a high-capacity Glock. Quick to get on target, open sights (can't use a scope in a bear encounter), goes deep, and lots of follow-up shots.
