You asked and we delivered! In our previous 2 videos covering extensively on the Cost of Living in Penang, we broke down the costs for Basic Needs in Part 1 and Wants in Part 2. All related costs were then compiled into 2 budgets - The Budget Sensitive Penangite and The Average Consumer Penangite.
In today’s video, we are back again covering all relevant costs for an Early Retirement in Penang, and for who? You guessed it! It is for Foreigners who desire to retire early in Penang, Malaysia. We have broken down the costs in various categories, from Food, to Transport, to Accommodation, to Healthcare, covering ALL the Basic Retirement Needs. But most importantly, we have shared how a Foreigner is able to stay Long-Term in Penang! We provided various VISA application methods for a Foreigner to retire and stay long term in Penang.
Hi, my name is John, a Singaporean. Together with my wife Fran, a Penangite Malaysian, we retired in 2020 at the age of 40 in Singapore. We then moved to Penang in 2022. This is because we have families in both countries, and we are proud to call Penang and Singapore our choice homes of retirement.
In this video, you will also find out if it is possible to retire early in Penang!
The prices quoted are in Malaysia Ringgit and are kept as accurately as possible.
We hope you enjoy watching this video, and do let us know in the comment section if you like it!
With lots of love - Fran and John

It was awesome. KL is fantastic and Penang is very inviting. Cant decide which one is better. KL has better public transport while Penang is a quite large city with small town feel. Both have great food selections. Price wise is almost the same. I rented a scooter while in Penang. It’s the better way to get around in Penang conveniently. Since my wife doesn’t ride, KL is preferred. For now.

Retirement is not sit motionless at home. Even this channel's owners are not doing nothing though enjoying Retirement. They have Sources of income from their investments and growing this channel can bring in future income and even sponsorships. So, Retirement should be enjoying life and still receiving income with plenty of time to tour around. Many however want to work till they die as they do not see a way out in their limited life.

I really like this channel, you're authentic and realistic with your contents and presentations, you inspire other people to live more freely. I also have to say you did NOT retire at 40. You left corporate life! You're still working - you swapped working for business entities with working for yourself flexibly, and investing your capital to live off your business and investment activities. You have not taken early retirement at 40 as you keep telling us!
@corporatebreakoutcouple

Retired to us means retiring from the work that we don't want to do aka work for corporate hence our name Corporate Breakout Couple. We are also very young, so there is no way you will find us shaking legs at home doing nothing. Yes, we live off our passive income from our investments, which is why we can quit the rat race. @@corporatebreakoutcouple English dictionary definition of 'retirement' (not my own words): retirement noun 1. Withdrawal from one's occupation or position, especially upon reaching a certain age. 2. The age at which one withdraws from work or activity. 3. The act of retiring or the state of being retired. ==== You've made a choice in life, to change gear and direction, to have more say on your life, on how you spend your time and how you exchange it for money. I'm very happy when more people realise they have this option. I'm supportive of your choice, of what you're doing and a fan of this channel, but this isn't retirement. That's my point based on formal dictionary definition of 'retirement'. If you can coin a phrase that captures essence of what you're doing, it'll be a public service. Thank you, god bless, peace and respect ♥
@corporatebreakoutcouple
@corporatebreakoutcouple Год назад
@@soundslight7754 This is our definition of early retirement (as we've been advocating in our channel) : Early retirement doesn't mean not working at all. It means retiring from work that you don't want to do. In 2023, retirement or early retirement looks very different compared to the 80s, 90s and 2000s. People now have more options, thanks to the digital age that we are in. More and more millennials and Gen Z are refusing to conform to the usual ideas of retirement that they see their parents and grandparents are doing or striving for.

How sad that Malaysia decided to tighten its financial requirements for the MM2H program. Few foreigners can qualify so they will retire, invest and spend their money in other countries. Even if they relax the requirements in the future, who will trust the government to honor the program anymore?
@corporatebreakoutcouple
@corporatebreakoutcouple Год назад
Yes, it is indeed sad, Linda. We know of people who had to move out of Malaysia because they no longer qualify for the new criterias. To be then told that the new rules do not apply for renewals. However that being said, one can really enjoy a great life in Malaysia, so there's always some element of risk involved each time one decides to relocate, regardless of the type of visa.

You can also travel to other Asian countries as they are easily accessible. Which is cheaper with better quality of living including air pollution, penang or pattaya?
@corporatebreakoutcouple
@corporatebreakoutcouple 10 месяцев назад
2 pretty different countries. Penang is a city island so you have the hills, the beaches, not much air pollution, great food, generally safe place. Pattaya is a city of Thailand's gulf coast and is well known for its parties and cabarets, night life. Another thing to note is that Thailand is general is a lot hotter than Malaysia and the water is hard water, so it does affect hair and skin. We just spent 3 weeks in Thailand and we noticed a huge difference in our skin, hair and complexion. That being said, both countries are lovely, so perhaps you can decide to spend 6 months in Penang and another 6 months in Thailand (pattaya or elsewhere) and then make a decision.

We do not wish for birth and death, the choice is ours when we reach our desire to retire in heaven.

Hello, how is health insurance for foreigners?
@corporatebreakoutcouple
@corporatebreakoutcouple 4 месяца назад
Usually foreigners will buy their own insurance from their home country (that's what we do as well) Best to speak to an insurance agent on other coverage

Please share with us your idea /definition of retiring. Once you retire, do you intend to just sit at home all day to watch TV? To us, that is a sure way to an early grave.

@corporatebreakoutcouple
@corporatebreakoutcouple Год назад
@@ibraheemali9541 definitely! We too do charity work in Singapore and Penang. However it does take money to do charity work. We donate our time and money. And the more money we make, the more we can donate and give back. The beauty of creating businesses like digital business is the passive income that it brings in. Having this business then allows one to apply for a digital nomad visa.

The costs is broken down for one half of a couple because certain costs are shared. That's how you can obtain the true cost of living in a place.

The costs are for one person. The reason why we say one half of a couple is because there are a lot of shared costs /resources like house, cooking costs.

My friend, in my opinion your budget conscious n average retiree cost is way out from what is actually needed. Budget conscious you listed Food at RM600 and Rent at RM1200. RM600 can be achieved with no eat outs. Home cooking all the time. Rental RM1200 way too high. Perhaps for RM650, can rent a two rooms flat. And for your average retiree, RM1200 for food is reasonable. This retiree has space for eat outs n perhaps some low end entertainment. But RM2000 for rental is way too high. For around RM1000 can get a decent apartment. By the way I have been staying in Penang for more than 50 years.
@corporatebreakoutcouple
@corporatebreakoutcouple Год назад
Our budget is actually very realistic and on the ground. It is unrealistic to expect people, especially ones who are early retired in their 40s and 50s to not eat out in cafes or restaurants. We are advocating a lifestyle which is not super lavish or over the top but realistic of a middle income person. Not forgetting people who opt to retire early in Malaysia do have a certain purchasing power, perhaps from passive income from investments or because of their income in a foreign currency which is superior to the Ringgit. One cannot assume that once one is retired, one needs to be frugal until one is no longer in this world.

M'sia gov is milking on the retirees. No one can earn an income as a retiree with RM 40k/mth. It makes no sense at all. Also if you need RM1.5mln plus RM 1.0 mln deposit, only super rich retirees can find some where else in southern Europe to retire.
