In this video, I share a three year project. It started with a concern for the wild turkey and has led to more opportunity for me as a habitat manager, a land owner, and spiritual opportunities. We sheared over 20 acres of Eastern Red Cedar in 2021 and now we have 20+ acres of early successional habitat. We have seen the increase of turkeys. I'm sure you heard the quail in the back ground. The deer havent changed either. This stand is due for a burn, lot of grass, but that's what I've been waiting for. I have put boots on the ground for 3 years dragging a 2 gallon Dewalt hand pump sprayer and now with a Birchmeier back pack sprayer I can stay on top of the invasives. It's still a work in progess. Conservation is never finished. It is a love for the land and for the next generation.

Which section (code) did you get the assistance for clearing the cedars? Was it an amount that was worth the hassle? I have a 15 acre section on my property in north Alabama that’s a limestone glade over taken by cedars. I had an NRCS agent walk it with me yesterday and he said they don’t deal with that much so I have a feeling I’m going to have to do a lot of leg work to try and get any assistance.

It was under EQIP Very Heavy Mechanical. The code is 314. I would press for it. Put an application in and see what happens. Worst case scenario you don't get funded. Being in Alabama you may have a small market for cedars? You may have some called slickback cedars which essentially are cedar trees that grew thin and slick like a pine tree. If you have that clean trunk you may get a logger in there and get them cut. At this point it's not about making money it's just about getting the cedar trees off. To answer your question though: yes the amount was worth it. Now in our area the amount did increase since 2021. I did have to pay a little out of pocket fot this shearing, but the EQIP paid for 2/3 of the original price. The cost share is high enough I'm just paying the contractor the total amount what I signed up for. Which I don't care I just want it done. Hope this helps. Google "EQIP 314 Brush Management" and you will get a list of available brush management practices. Also get a hold of your state forester they should be able to help you to get the right people to get the cost share you need. Thank you for your question and good luck!

@@BeastsofBurdenPodcast thank you for the detailed answer! I’m going to do a little more research to see if there’s a market for them in my area. Like I told the agent yesterday, it’s definitely not about the money. I’m going to do it either way. Just thought if I could qualify for one of the programs I could hire someone to help me so I didn’t have to do it by myself over a couple of years. If there’s a market for them breaking even would be a huge success to me. Thanks again for the information and look forward to more content!
