I appreciate you actually taking the time to explain your thought processes when choosing areas and baits to use. Here, in WV, the fishing can be tough, so any additional knowledge is appreciated

Took this knowledge out to the St. Croix River and caught my PB smallie (4 lb 14 oz) on a jerkbait. Thanks for your help!

I’ve been bankfishing the Mississippi near St. Cloud, MN. And using your videos as a guide. I love the information and effort you put in to your craft. Been pulling in fish 16-19” every time I go out, but the 20 inchers have been evading me so far. Keep the videos comin, big dawg!

Love hearing that! Keep at it, they are in there for sure. I really like that area around St Cloud. You may recognize some areas in my video from the Bronzeback Classic a few years back.

Another great informative video. I like the choices and alternate topwater lures depending on the fish's mood. If they're going hard I like a Plopper, if they need to be coaxed then a Popper or Chug Bug. I do like the crawfish dragging bottom but when the algae slime shows up its weightless flukes and a 4 inch Yum Dinger. If we're playing in a little deeper water then I add a tiny split shot. Good stuff brother, northern IL rivers and creeks fish similarly to what you are seeing. Blessings

Yep, solid choices there. I go to a wacky rig or a plastic jerkbait a lot this time of year because of grass and whatever else that's growing along the bottom.

Great video. Just found your channel and really enjoy it. Have you ever made a video about the tackle you choose fishing a smaller river from kayak? Curious if you tend to stick to shorter rods? Specialized or all purpose rods? Fishing line types? Thanks again for having a great channel.
@RivermanTV-
@RivermanTV- 3 месяца назад
I haven't made any videos specifically about my rod choices for river trips. I usually try to use rods that are 7' or under and suitable for at least two techniques. For example, I might throw both a jerkbait and wacky rig on a 6'10" Medium Fast rod while I save another spinning setup of similar length but slightly heavier action for a plastic swimbait and/or Midwest finesse rig. My casting setups are usually heavier overall and are reserved for topwater, crankbaits, swim jigs, jigs, etc.

June here in east Tennessee and the rivers are 70-74* with some of the rivers already at low levels usually not seen until Sept. The smallmouth are still here in the same sections as last year and still killing the dark sleeper and any 3" goldish brown paddletails or underspins in the same colors that look like the little suckers or Darters. They are not hitting any topwater lures though, no whopper ploppers, no spooks, no jerk baits so that is odd. I've been checking out other rivers and streams but none produce 15-20 fish in a quarter mile float like my honey hole. Some locations near Newport that are easy to fish from the banks near large farms using migrant labor have been picked clean. I floated 12 miles of what is labeled a trophy smallmouth river over a 2 day period and caught 4-5 small bass. I'm learning to just skip areas where it looks like people have been fishing from the banks...the hunt continues

No topwater is weird this time of year for sure. Keep hammering and good luck out there 👊

Does a tube factor into your bait selection at all for summer river smallmouth?
@RivermanTV-
@RivermanTV- 3 месяца назад
I don't throw a tube as much as I should, but a lot of times I'm trying to avoid dragging the bottom. Instead I want to cover water quickly and generate more bites. Any river that has crayfish will have smallies that will absolutely kill a tube. It will work almost anywhere in the country at basically any time of year.
@golfguy8403
@golfguy8403 3 месяца назад
@@RivermanTV- thanks for the reply. I’ve never fished a tube before, but I’m going to be fishing an up-river section of the St. Croix by kayak and am trying to formulate a game plan. This video was a fantastic place to start.
@RivermanTV-
@RivermanTV- 3 месяца назад
@@golfguy8403 all the baits in this video will do well out there. I'd add that a lightly weighted wacky rig also works well in place of a jerkbait and is a little more subtle.

Any tips on how to get a plopper out of a tree when trying to sneak it up close to cover? Asking for a friend…
@RivermanTV-
@RivermanTV- 3 месяца назад
I'm a fan of the using braided line and pulling until something breaks 🙃 Or I slowly move my kayak to it and pull it off by hand.

For the jerkbait what power of rod are you using on your spinning set up? Just got a vision one ten jr but my medium rod seems hard to consistently jerk like you do in the vid.
@RivermanTV-
@RivermanTV- 23 дня назад
Medium fast is generally what I use for jerkbaits. This rod is a Daiwa Tatula 6'10"

So basically you are not going out working the bottom, you only switch to the Ned rig after for example missing one on a top water bite or when they are not hitting on top or middle of water column?
@RivermanTV-
@RivermanTV- 2 месяца назад
Yes. Fishing bottom baits is relatively slow and it's hard to cover a lot of water in a short amount of time. If I have found fish in an area with other methods, I will slow down and fish the bottom as well because I know fish are there. For me it is too time consuming to drag the bottom if I don't know fish are there.

Hey there! Just have a question for you. I just ordered my first fishing kayak (pelican angler 100x) and an anchor wizard. I am stuck on where to mount it, bow or stern. I usually try and go upstream on the river to start so I have the current to get me back to the car when I am tired. I like to anchor and break down areas for a few minutes, move up 100 ft and repeat. I got the anchor wizard as its streamlined and quick. I don't really want to use an anchor trolley, just seems like a pain if I want to stay anchored for a short while and keep moving up nor do I want to buy another anchor wizard for both sides as it was expensive (canadian) With that said what would you recommend for me? Bow or stern? Also do you mainly cast up stream or down stream? I keep reading its better to cast upstream to let your lure flow in the direction fish are facing but I use a light ned rig a lot and the current just takes it continuously creating slack and also hard to impart and action like popping that way. What are your thoughts on that? Loving your channel as a beginner river kayak angler!
@RivermanTV-
@RivermanTV- 2 месяца назад
@@zachh-w3s I recommend mounting it to the bow. It serves a better purpose up there when you are mostly fishing upstream. I don't even take a rear anchor when I know I am just working upstream. It may be worth considering rigging the rear of your kayak so that you can easily move the Anchor Wizard between two locations. When you turn around the head downstream you could swap it and enjoy the benefits while going down too.
@zachh-w3s
@zachh-w3s 2 месяца назад
@@RivermanTV- Thanks for getting back to me! Do you have more success casting with current or against?
@RivermanTV-
@RivermanTV- 2 месяца назад
@@zachh-w3s I don't think one is always better than the other, but bringing baits downstream is definitely more natural. Sometimes spots require different angles when casting so it's not always possible to bring a bait downstream perfectly. But for the most part, I like bringing my baits downstream or drifting them downstream to targets.
