Inspired by Early Victorian fashion plates, I recreate this intricate, 1840s hairstyle, with Seven Strand Braids, dubbed "Dog Ears" by the contemporaries,

The more I researched the brief period when these Dog Ears were fashionable, the more I grew to love them. They have a very intricate and textured look to them, and I'm sure will be a welcome addition to any reenactor's repertoire, and a treat to all Historical Hairstyle aficionados.
Let me know if you've tried this hairstyle, as I'd love to find out what different spins others will take at it!

Problem: your unique hair color/combination of colors is so beautiful that it seriously distracts me from just looking at the style. (This is not a problem, it´s a bonus!)

Princess Leis would rock this, also you should definitely do a video on how to make the traditional flower band thingy!

I 'm very sorry to add that my mother called a similar hairdressing on my little sister in the seventies monkeys' swing ... but I like the style anyways ... Glad about this new video , thanks !

Thank you :) it's a really cute name for it (or anything resembling it), no need to feel bad about it! I can really see the similarity :D

Our mother called it "monkeys' swing" too, "Affenschaukeln" in german :D But we made them from 3-strand braids. I should try it again with some more strands. @PrettyShepherd: By the way your hair colour is incredibly beautiful, I love it!

Your period videos are excellent. The historical details, clothing, and aesthetics add to them also. I like hairstyles of Victorian era Europe. You look great! Best wishes.

Another lovely video :) I would have liked it if you showed the finished bun from the back a bit more. Also, I envy your hair length!

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed this one and I'm happy about the feedback too! I tend to get so used to what my hair looks like that I sometimes forget how interesting some "simple" aspects can be. I'll keep in mind to make a better show of it next time :)

Very pretty! I really want to see your hair with this hairstyle plus the flower band with the long dangly flowers on either side! I think that would look really beautiful!

Yes, yes! So do I! I really need to find the time to make one. *sigh* maybe after I’ve moved, in a few weeks ;)

What an amazing channel you have here! It is wonderful to watch and I find your accent very endearing. I can tell you put a lot of work into your research, too. This is a great way to learn lesser known facts from different eras and have fun at the same time. I will definitely be watching more of your videos :)

My favourite Magyar film has always been Liliomfi (made in the 1950s but the setting is 1830s), the character Erzsi had this hairstyle throughout the movie but the back is covered by a bonnet.

Morgan donner really helped me braiding my hair with more than 3 strands, before her video on reconstructing her doppelganger, i would weave my extreme braids by litteraly weaving the strand under and over each strand this technique gets cumbersome quote quickly but she explained how to do a four strand braind in a way that is similar to bobbin lace making (twist the outside strands turn the inside strands rinse and repeat) it's so much easier on the hands and the brain. i'm currently playing with my oiled hair trying to make as intricate braids as i can and i find that beyond 5 strands ot starts to get cumbersome on me (and i would benefit from longer hair than i currently have) but it's mostly lack of practice at this point

i found that using a hard pomade helps in distinguishing the strands (more so than oil) and i expect the style to last longer, would do that on hair you expect to wash rather soon

I love your period appropriate outfit here! I regret having my hair cut from covering the shoulderblades to just on the shoulder (mother's pressure) with volume at the top and thin jn the back. I've been trying to grow it back for at least 5 years now, but it just won't get thicker in the lower half. I'm seriously considering hair extensions at this point. ☹️😥

In the 70s my hair was midcalf. I would braided and coil it over my ears. That is until the guys kept saying that the coils over the ears looked like the buffing pads on some Black N Decker tool. Now that I'm 68 my hair is only to my waist. I do miss my long hair.

Most women your age subdue themselves by cutting their hair short to conform, you are already a badass for having waist length hair!

Not yet over 60, but coming up fast ... and while mine is also not as long as it was, I´m damned if I´m going to wear a bob just because I´m "old". Still thigh length and proud with no plans for a haircut! (Also: Midcalf, wow! I´m envious!)

This hairstyle was popular during those five years because it was Queen Victoria’s hairstyle or very similar to it.

I would like to compliment you on saying “mothers-in-law” properly, rather than “mother-in-laws,” which is totally incorrect. I almost never hear anyone say that correctly these days, including my own adult daughters, and it drives me batty!
