Bomani is correct in calling out those justifying this and calling for "more Black nepotism". This is a case of marketability over merit, doing what makes cents over what's right, which is what capitalism has always been grounded on. Base & Superstructure: the way in which our economy is organized (capitalism) dictates what its institutions (Superstructure) are going to teach and model for us culturally and ideologically. Capitalism is based on the accumulation of profit at all cost. Therefore, the art, education, sports, entertainment we consume will reinforce that logic in our minds. "Black nepotism" is not a vehicle to overcome white economic and political power and domination, it's a manifestation of what we've been taught is necessary to succeed in this system. That it's not about merit, but about power. Who has it, and who can wield it to their own advantage at the expense of the others with less or no power. TV analysts pushing capitalist and ruling class values is an inherent function of capitalist media. They are legitimizing one of the practices that is exploiting all of us, and is consolidating economic and political power in the hands of a small class of people. Evoking very real issues like racism and anti-Blackness to teach us that these practices are a necessary part of life and therefore ok if we do it, is a part of the development of ideas for the purpose of social control. When we understand this notion of Base & Superstructure, we can see things for what they really are and chose to engage or not, from a more critical place.
@GeecheeYaw
@GeecheeYaw 2 дня назад
@hiramrivera would you say the whole structure is nepotistic... many if not all major league players have family members who was considered when they got selected, not all those players stuck around but them getting to college and those that made it to the next level, do you think the school and coaches connections help them get to the place where the capitalist owner can acknowledge them as or test out their marketability?
@hiramrivera1204
@hiramrivera1204 2 дня назад
@@GeecheeYaw The whole system is based on exploitation and competition. And so those in power are always competing with each other to keep and increase their power (and wealth), and those who don't have it are taught that they should everything they can to try and get it. A savage game of survival of the fittest where the rules are skewed for those who already have all the advantages. So nepotism is a very common practice for consolidating that power and position in the social hierarchy. Skewing the rules. Nepotism does show up in Major League Baseball. Yes, it can get you into college, it can get you jobs on MLB teams and in MLB offices (which is where you see it a lot). The thing with baseball, that separates it from the rest of the professional sports, is its incredibly colonial practices with regards to the baseball academies. MLB doesn't need to concede so much power to a star player for the sake of marketing his son because they're running baseball camps across latin America. Exploiting deeply impoverished countries and kids, in order to extract wealth from them by paying them under market value, while maximizing profit off their incredible star power. The Lakers wouldn't have to draft Bronny if they had academies across the globe and could sign potentially 2 more Lebrons for the price of a Bronny.

Great analysis. Substitute black capitalism for black nepotism and your essay holds up without much modification. Black conservative and liberal leaders pushing a system/process (capitalism) that has exploited and commodified black people, and caused untold suffering seems illogical and negates black people. Cultural productions, unwitting or intentional, that reinforce this system of exploitation and commodification, are dehumanizing and replicate suffering and pathology. If we are interested in reducing human suffering, this system and its cultural producers have to be identified, critiqued, challenged, and replaced. Gangsterism, misogyny, commodity fetishism, and pimp/'ho' phenomena maintain the pathological, thanotophilia that is the reality of the realm in modern day America.

One thing I would point out is that what is being pushed to balck people is not "entrepreneurship" but get rich quick based on investment schemes and other things. America itself was created as a "get rich scheme" based on taking land, resources and labor from other people as the basis of neo-feudal "entrepreneurship. And all levels of businesses big and small in this country are modeled on that initial endeavor, which has never been opened to the former free labor class. Also, on that note, keep in mind that the capitalist interests and money managers who are behind these schemes are also the ones behind this process of "agency capture" from balck people. This started in academia in the 90s when universities with funding and support started promoting social justice degrees and certificates, which then became consultancy bureaucracies that then evolved into DEI, all of which is about taking away the agency of the grassroots in defining their own agendas and talking points. So when you hear them talking about misinformation, they are talking about any kind of online attempts to reassert grassroots agency over and above these controlled voices and paradigms promoted by the status quo.

If LeBron's kid was even a quasi-star @ USC (he avg'd 4 pts/game) and was rated somewhere at least in the top 25, there would be no issue. The Lakers themselves have stated that this will be 'historic' with dad & son. So, the air will clear and life will go on. I hope the young James isn't damaged by this move in the future.

as you make my point in the next comment... "Marketing ploy".. and who is the corporations that is behind the marketing, and who is in power that ultimately/mainly benefits? is not the whole structure nepotistic? folks from a particular hs, with a particular coach make it to a particular college with a particular coach they then sign to a agent and all those particulars help them get to where they are exploited by the same capitalist who are engaged in nepotism. the whole infrastructure is built off what is being defined as nepotism..

3rd on Nepotism. It’s obvious that black nepotism is only an issue, when it comes to Lebron James. Nepotism is not called out when the “Greek freak, has 2 brothers playing on his team taking up “roster space”. Nepotism isn’t brought when Rob Pelinka the current GM of the Lakers got his job bc of his friendship with Kobe Bryant.

This is too easy, stop glazing. Thanasis was winning rings in the Greek league then was drafted 51st by the Knicks, and was under contract for 3 season with the Knicks. My EYL litany of incomplete thoughts: Black people should not collectively leverage their economic purchasing power, as it does not work to increase our collective economic power. Additionally, we should neither harm nor attack those who actively work against our interests or advocate for such actions publicly, nor should we support or help our children in their work or their life dreams, as this would be unfair to others. Black people also cannot ask for compensation from a country that enslaved their ancestors for hundreds of years, as that would offend others Especially those in the Black diaspora. What the hell happened to this show? Diallo, what happened to 'right-wing ideology will never lead to your freedom'?
