Unbelievable!!! I’m 72 and in1969 I bought an identical car down to the color from Norwood Chevrolet in Providence RI. They were the Yenko of the Northeast. On the showroom floor was this car plus a station wagon with a 427 and a Camaro with a L88 427. Being newly married I thought the Chevelle made more sense. Sure. I was 22 and making big money as an commercial aircraft mechanic. The salesman explained that the Chevelle had what he called a taxi cab body. No power anything, cardboard door panels, and no carpet just rubber mat. Once I signed for it they took it to the service department and put El Camino front coils in, ladder bars and air bags under it, and electric fuel pump. Of course all that was rolled into the financing. Some weeks I made more money street racing with that car than at work. I won’t go into why I gave that car up except to say I handed my Man Card over to the wife. Thanks for the flashback Patrick.

I'm 66 now but when I was 17 (1972) I joined the Marines . I was stationed in South Carolina at Parris Island and our DI had a beautiful blue 1969 ss 396 that he drove in each day. I always wish I had that car. I did buy a 1970 silver ss 396/402 when I got home. He does have the plastic on the floor which is correct , not putting plastic over the car.

People forget that in the 80’s these cars were not collectible as they are today. That’s why so many are found outside deteriorating away. Someone really loved this car to preserve it in this condition....it’s not about the $$$ to the owner. He’ll never sell it.

Wow I am in disbelief what you have found, I am gob smacked that Chevelle is the cream ala cream of Chevelle's. Just yesterday here in my home city of Melbourne Australia my mechanic had a 1970 Apollo White Buick GSX Automatic Stage 1 on his hoist. I was floored I couldn't beleive what I was looking at let alone touching. I tried to explain to the boys how super rare expensive & 1 of 280 GSX built then being Apollo White 1 of possibly 40. They just didn't get it or understand the significance of my excitement. Even called the number 1 radio station in the arvo because the host is a car guy even he didn't seem to know what I was on about. I can understand your excitement Glenn because I experienced it yesterday & today. Keep the great videos coming. Louis from Australia

According to folklore, PT Barnum said there's a sucker born every minute and this car would make you one of them. It's not just the heads painted black the whole motor is painted black. Why go thru the trouble of painting a 2200 mile motor black? What about that odometer if you are going to turn it back at least get the numbers straight! And for a car with 2200 miles that clutch pedal rubber sure has a lot of wear on it. That hogwash about stopping the line waiting for the engine is completely crazy. Before any car is built all the parts to build the car are put in sequence so that the right car is built with the right parts so that they wouldn't have to stop the line. And if you watch a car being built on an assembly line on RU-vid you would see there is no way you can pull a car off the line until it spits out the other end ready to drive itself off. The motor in this car is more likely a transplant which is probably when it was painted black. I have found other discrepancies in some of this guy's other videos when it comes to the real facts about the car he is making the video of. I would hope he is not misleading people himself. I would rather think that the owners of some of these cars may be misleading him.

glad you posted this, i can't remember the number of people over the years that have told me im crazy that these didn't exist, in late 69 i put the same engine in my 63 split window coupe, i don't remember the trans being the m22 though. long story about how and why but the owner of chevelle and i did the change together, i had been watching for one of these to show up since several of the magazines were all amped up about it. this made the corvette absolutely dangerous to drive but more fun than a person deserves. what i didn''t know was it was so rare, the car itself was pretty plain looking, not a super sport, bench seat, no stripes, no alum wheels just caps and beauty rims. the times seem right , my car had stock gears and with narrow rims and 7in m&h racemasters with race tubes and screws to keep them from slipping , it ran consistent low 12s, i have a stack of time slips that vary from 12.17 to 12.23, very consistent and very scary to drive, on the street with stock tires in third gear it could get you sideways quick.

@Keith Ling -. My story's nothing special but since we're talkin about chevelles, 🤗 I had a 68 Chevelle like that I bought it at a lot I paid $4,000 around 1984 it look like a black pearl it had bucket seats and a slapstick a350 somebody put a high rise intake and a shift kit when you were on the highway an floored it ,it throws you back in your set, I was 22 don't know how many speeding tickets I got lost my license twice, I love that car wish I still had it those were the days, man women young and old stared at it, I would definitely appreciate it more now. PS. 👍 I remember being behind a slowpoke going about 15 MPH, so I floor it cross the double yellow line go around Grandpa and then see blue lights (pulled over for speeding, it was a25mph zone) I remember the cop saying what is this racing engine, you jump to 60 mph in like two seconds, funny thing he didn't say nothing about crossing the double yellow 👍

It had like 45,000 miles on it and been garage kept. 396 with a 4 speed. He blew it up in a week lol. It probably hadn't seen over 45mph when the old couple had it. He was taking Auto Mechanics and drove up to Columbus to Jegs and bought a bored and stroked 396, Eldebrock crossflow intake and you name it. Muncie Rock Crusher 4 speed 4.11 gears. It was a beast! that's a real common thing, the original engine being a few days later than the build date on the car. the rarer the engine combo the more likely to find this. you nailed it, they have to pull it off the line and wait for the motors at some point. that's my dream car right there... it doesn't get much better than that.

Whoa!!.... unbelievable; it would have been nice to have seen that 1970 black on black LS6 down south, too bad you couldn't get close. Thanks for your knowledge of these cars and it makes me appreciate my lowly 70 Atlanta built L34 no engine or trans, but do have build sheet. Thanks

What happened to the motor and transmission
@williammunny7133
@williammunny7133 5 лет назад
@@joshuaherpolsheimer4699 It was long gone when I purchased the body, which has really good original sheet metal. I found the build sheet in it and for some god knows reason I held on to it. Along came Glenn Nichols and it all makes since now. I've had it for some time now stuffed in a building and used to drive it; at the time I put a 454/390 in it with a borg warner T-10 wide ratio, but it can be put together a lot better then that. thats my story.

I knew a friend who had a Copo 1969 ss 396 that they super built up the motor to 402, and 4 speed. The son of the owner lost control and t- boned a telephone pole. That motor was put in another friend's car with automatic transmission. It was impossible to drive without smoking the tires every shift, but it was fun.

I went with my brother the night before Thanksgiving 1968 to pick up his new 1969 SS396 Chevelle at Degnan Chevrolet in Philly. That car was on the sidewalk when we arrived, Burnished brown with dark brown vinyl roof, parchment interior and white side stripe, it came with SS mag wheels and white wall tires, he later put Cragar SS on it with the white stripe tires. It was a pretty combo.

Here's an excerpt from Super Chevy magazine on how quick the L78 was: Just how fast was a stock 1969 L78 Chevelle right out of the box? Hot Cars magazine tested one in their February 1969 issue, recording a 14.07/101 mph. Popular Hot Rodding magazine tested a 1968 L78 SS Chevelle and found they could get the car down to the high 13s with just a set of Casler slicks. A better shifter and linkage, headers and a proper setup could whittle the L78's time down into the low 13s.

the HP is there, the improvement in tires , ignition, fuel injection & these 8 & 10 speed paddle shift transmissions can account for a second or two if done right.

Back in the day it was very common to disconnect the odometer on G.M's for resale purposes. Its very easy to do. So, you really think this guy drove this car 2200 miles, was in an accident and changed so many parts. Highly unlikely. If the steering wheel has been messed with,,,I'm willing to bet that odometer has either been changed or disconnected.

Epic find! Excellent, I am envious! Thanks Patrick, loved the information. Also, thanks to the owner for keeping the Chevelle stored in a safe, dry environment so it will live again! Wonder if the Chevelle has factory disk brakes (2 or 4 piston)?

I can't believe I had one of these and let it get away. Mine was burgundy with black vinyl top and black interior with bench seat. It had optional PS & AC. It was built for a GM line worker and he sold it to me for less than $2,000 so he could order the "70 model. The only thing I was disappointed with was the fact that the rocker studs would get pushed out of the aluminum head due to the solid lifters. We tried exchanging them for screw in rocker studs. When that failed we pinned them in. Then the pins collars started splitting the collars apart so there was no way to save those heads. It's a good thing the above mentioned owner only drove it on Sundays or it would have replacement heads on it by now.

I had a 1970 SS Chevelle. It came with Malibu interior. When I bought it used, I didn't believe it was a real SS. one day I was cleaning the interior, pulled out the back seat and found the original build sheet. It came from the factory with the 396, all SS, except had Malibu interior. If I hadn't found the build sheet I'd never believed GM did that. I thought I had a fake SS. It wasn't! It was a badass hotrod, but a rust bucket Lol
