Earthbound Criminal Caterpillar Encounter

In the Dusty Dunes Desert there is a rare encounter with the monster named the Criminal Caterpillar. Normally it just runs away and you defeat it instantly, but if you unequip your weapons and force a regular encounter, you can actually do battle with the Criminal Caterpillar. You would think this would be an easy encounter, but you might be surprised!

If I'm not mistaken, your combined Offense Stat is what decides if you automatically win or not. Otherwise leaving Paula unarmed isn't a bad idea for the extra inventory

The Criminal Caterpillar and the Master Criminal Worm are like Earthbound's version of Metal Slimes from Dragon Quest

Pretty well. The Caterpillars/Worms are generally easier to snipe, but definitely worth dropping whatever you were doing to chase one down

Yeah, normally, when you encounter him, you get a green swirl and the game gives you an instant win. So to fight him I like to bump into him, then immediately turn around so the game gives me the blue swirl instead. You know what I'm talking about, probably! Anyway, I fought one of these guys for my Rock Candy Trick video.

I remember the first time I tried to fight one in battle I had one dead party member, and he wrecked me because I didn't expect Fire Alpha. Totally forget about one appearing in the Rock Candy video

Fun fact: Jeff only got a crit in that battle because he didn't have a weapon equiped. With a weapon, Jeff can't get smash attacks. Also, it wasn't guts that saved Paula, it was because the enemy was defeated before the game had a chance to make her unconscious.

That order of events would only happen with the Guts mechanic

@@melrauko Her HP reached 0, and it said she took mortal damage. It wasn't the Guts mechanic that saved her, the battle ended before she was knocked out.

This is how I've been grinding up Poo after getting him in my current ( and first ever) EB playthrough. Being able to get an easy 7000+ EXP per Party Member is really nice for grinding

They're a deceptively hard enemy if you actually get to engage them in battle. Their red counterpart's aren't much better

Dusty Dunes desert is the best place to level up I'm constantly leveling up my party I level up so much to where the criminal caterpillar runs away from me and I get a green swirl it sure does help getting all that experience points in Scaraba there's a master criminal worm that will appear every once in awhile that will drop way more experience points then the criminal caterpillar which is even more helpful

I believe this and master criminal worm are the rarest enemies in earthbound. They are the real rare enemies that most people don't encounter

There's a red version that also appears in Scaraba worth much more EXP, but yeah there's a green counterpart in Dusty Dunes. This game is just full of hidden stuff, it's wild

With certain pathing you can farm this and the red one non stop for huge lvl gains.

I almost always find at least one caterpillar in my playthrough. They're rare, but you'll eventually find it. I even fought it once or twice when I was somehow too weak and didn't get the instant win ;d

First time I actually "fought" one I got a game over. I was expecting it to do like 1 HP damage, but I was in for a surprise! I don't usually go out of my way to find one, but if I see one I always hunt it down.

Fun fact! Jeff actually can't get smash hits with his gun. In order to not one shot the Criminal Caterpillar, I unequipped everyone's weapons, because Auto-Wins are decided based on formula dealing with Party Wide Offense, and Speed. The reason Jeff smashed here is because he was using his fists!

@@MegaHarv im already past the second desert and in the dino world rn, though i keep losing to much psi to where i cant use any on Carbon dog, and even if i do get past Carbon dog, diamond dog kills me almost instantly (side not : i haven't killed the 5th or the 6th Guardian)
