This is the first lecture of Earthing & Bonding series. It captures basic definitions and interesting facts related to body impedance and threshold current levels for perception, immobilization, Let-go and ventricular fibrillation based on IEC 60479-1 & IEEE 80.
It also presents the body impedance model as per IEC 60479-1 and its variation with respect to touch voltage, frequency, duration of current flow, current path, Area, Temperature, moisture.

Can you have a return path from the ground on the Moon, or Mars? It is a return path depending on soil resistivity, isn't it? Just a thought! (Instead of Earthing, you will be Mooning or Marsing!) Great lectures like always keep up the great work!
@railwayengineeringinsights6463
@railwayengineeringinsights6463 2 года назад
Thanks a lot. In case the source is on Moon/Mars and is feeding a load at the earth, then the return path will be the atmosphere as the current flows closed path. However, in this case, the current will be negligible, thus making it a high impedance fault. Current will do back to its source through the least resistance path, which could be less resistive soil in case it is available on its way back to the source.

@@railwayengineeringinsights6463 I guess it's the same theory, it's universal! Ground is a return path no matter what planet you are on!

Very useful. One feedback, your video assumes that the power supply is grounded. In Railway signalling, supplies are sometimes floating so grounding is not needed at the equipment side. Please check IT type power systems.

Many thanks... Very true... As it was the first video so prepared more generalised one... Will discuss separately in a video about different types of earthing system... TT, TN-S, TN-C, IT, TN-C-S as per IEC 60364 series...

Nice lecture to begin earthing and bonding playlist. Is this concept related to how Faraday cage is designed?
@railwayengineeringinsights6463
@railwayengineeringinsights6463 4 года назад
Many thanks...not exactly...Faraday cage will a part of EMC series... Which is used to achieve immunity against radiated EM waves...

@@railwayengineeringinsights6463 how did Tesla walk in an electrified steel cage? Was is a Faraday cage?
@railwayengineeringinsights6463
@railwayengineeringinsights6463 4 года назад
Faraday cage is a solid steel box/cage preferably without any penetrations. Steel having high permeability is able to absorb high freq fields. Thus, protecting the circuit inside from external EM disturbances. As steel has higher conductivity compared to human body, the electric current will flow through it. This principle was used by Sir Tesla...

Current part was very helpful sir. Value of two standards are somewhat mismatching. Should we take IEEE80 as final word?
@railwayengineeringinsights6463
@railwayengineeringinsights6463 4 года назад
It depends upon the contractual requirement which standard needs to be adopted. There are also other standards but which to follow is up to client.
