NO FEAR SOCK KNITTING CLASS ONLINE
Class 9: Shadow Wrap Short Row Heel
In Today's class we will be learning the how to use shadow wraps in a Shadow Wrap Short Row Heel. This heel is knit with a series of twin and triple stitches to "build" each side of the short row heel. It is very easy to follow, there is very little counting and and it creates a perfectly symmetrical heel that has a deep and comfortable fit.
This tutorial is linked in my new sock pattern called Soxploration: The Shadow Wrap Heel. The links to purchase it on Ravelry and my website are below.

I have watched EVERY shadow wrap heel tutorial as well as reading every shadow wrap heel instructional post. This is, by far, the clearest explanation out there. Thank you SOOO much. And thank you also for your well-modulated, calm and soothing speaking manner. It helps mitigate the incipient panic of learning a new technique. LOL

@EarthtonesgirlPodcast I've just taken an expensive class where she was useless and intimidating. She gave out wrong instructions then laughed and bossed when we got it wrong. Your own class is fantastic in contrast.

@@jennymccullough9517I like supporting my local yarn stores but those classes are very expensive and because they're in-person I can't rewind one when I need to refer to it again. Or slow it down, or go at my own pace. I don't take them anymore.

I laughed when you said if it was too slow the viewer could speed it up as I replayed the video for almost every twin stitch on my first heal and then every triple stitch/ new triple on the return. Thank you so much for this repetitive real time knitting instruction. I’m sure you would have run out of patience if you had to go at my pace. But replay has no limit to patience ❤. Hint to new sock knitters: soft fuzzy 100% alpaca in dark purple is not a good choice for your first sock attempt. Only plus is the numerous mistakes won’t show very much.

Denise - That is one fabulous looking heel. I love the look of it, and how simple it is to work. No more getting lost on boomerang rows! The video was great: I could see you make all the stitches, and your explanations of what your hands were doing as you made the twin and triple stitches were simple, clear, and in time with your hand actions. That speaking while doing timing is quite an accomplishment. I can't wait to try this heel out. Thanks, Janet

I have been knitting my heels like this for years as I modified the other heel pattern for my needs and had no idea that 1) it had a name and 2) that it was an actual technique. 🤣 I love this explanation, it is really well done and so clear! You clearly explained some things I've just "done" and couldn't wrap my head around how to explain it, so thank you! Also, I love that you used 2 circs in this video - while I am a total Magic Loop girlie now, 2 circs is how I found my love for knitting socks and I used to teach beginning sock classes using the technique for years. (NGL, I kinda want to pick up a couple of circs again and cast on something after watching this, lol.)

I just finished the shadow wrap heel for the second pair of socks where I am using it. The first pair was an exercise in frustration. Your video and the Soxploration pattern could not be any better. It was definitely user error. There was lots and lots and lots of ripping. I did finish those socks, but was determined to try it again and try to do better. This time around was so much better. I actually am proud of the way the the heel looks and there was no ripping. Denise you are an amazing teacher.

Thank you for this! I was exactly like you, I can knit socks but was never happy with the look of the heel. I can't wait to try this! I'm a guy who knits :) My grandmother, who was basically house bound because of her health would give me some $ and told me to walk to the corner yarn shop and get her some pretty yarn. Different age back then :), Anyway, One day my wife and I were shopping in a department store. I noticed a "teach yourself to knit" kit. So I picked it up and my wife encouraged me to get it. Having watched my grandmother all those years helped me and I picked it up really easily. I may have discovered why she knitted. It's an awesome stress reliever, lol! Plus I love making things for people. Oh the Halloween outfits i've made for he grandkids! Anyway, Thanks again.

I am trying to knit socks for the first time. Thank you for the through instructions. I taught myself to crochet on my 60th birthday last January. I learned to knit when I was in Brownies. I have knit alot of items. Never felt confident enough to try. Until now Thank You So Much ❤️❤️❤️

Loved this. I'm pulling out all the stops and using this technique with my next pair of toe-up, two-at-a-time socks on magic loop. Wish me luck!

@@kathosim501 I had to complete the socks I was working on, first. Yesterday, I started a pair using worsted weight, so a lot fewer stitches -- 32 per sock (16 per side) instead of 64 (32 per side). I'm doing two-at-a-time, toe-up, and I incorporated this heel into the pattern. It appears to have worked very well. I will see if the heel is "deep" enough, as it only turned out to have 5 "twins" on each side of the center and 6 stitches in the center. I will know better once I get going up the leg and then try one on. As far as the technique, it was very easy and looks great, no holes.

I had to re-knit the heel three times because, with travel, I dropped one or another of the twin/triple stitches. There is no way on earth to figure out how to re-wrap them, so I had to tink. The second sock's tension is much better and I am super happy with my first pair of socks after 50 years of knitting!! #socksplorationaddict

Fantastic Heel! No holes at all. Even when the stitches are a bit loose, no holes. My new favorite heel!

I truly appreciate you and all that you offer to knitters. You “virtually” held my hand when I used your No Fear Sock Knitting tutorials and I successfully completed my first pair of knitted socks. I find your tutorials extremely helpful, clear and I like the real time process. I’m looking forward to trying this new heel on my next pair of socks. Have a great week.

I usually do 2aat, toe up with a fleegle heel. I was just getting to my heel when I found this video. I always considered the fleegle to be the easiest heel I've ever done. NOT ANYMORE! Thank you. I love this heel. Now I have to go watch all your videos.

I have a high instep so usually knit a heel flap and gusset but I thought I would give the shadow wrap heel a try as it looks much nicer than a heel flap. I followed this tutorial on my latest pair of socks, I prefer toe-up, and the fit is just perfect! Thank you so much for the great tutorial. I didn’t even need to watch the tutorial again to knit the heel on the second sock as it is so easy to memorise.

Thank you so much for this video. I have made quite a lot of cuff down socks with flap and gusset but have a pattern using short rows heels that i didnt really understand . I looked on RU-vid and found two which showed this method doing continental knitting which i dont use. I was so pleased with your instructions which is very clear using the knitting method i use. I had a practice last night and thrilled when it turned out ok. I will be able to finish the sock now I will be recommending your channel to my knitting friends

I was able to incorporate this heel into my sock with no issues thanks to your clear and detailed instructions. Would love to see more videos like this!!

One heel turned and the second starting the triple stitches. Could not have done it without your excellent tutorial. I have found it easier when slipping the purl triplets back on the proper nettle if I turn the work first and slip the stitches while viewing from the knit side. Thank you again.

April 23 and second heel turned. Note to self: put a lifeline in before starting the heel and another on last row of twin stitches. When I messed up a triple stitch I had to go all the way back to the beginning of the heel because I couldn’t tink the twin to triplets rows. Thank you @Earthtones Girl for the stitch by stitch tutorial.

I've done a fish lips kiss heel several times, but no matter HOW MANY times I did it, I kept having to refer to the pattern. This heel is SO easy to remember, I'm IN LOVE! It looks so beautiful and even my HUGE instep can go right into it without severe stretching. Thank you so much for such a well thought out pattern and an amazingly clear and concise video!!!

Thank you so much for this real time video and the fact that you don't have annoying music. I have a conversation problem, and with great effort taught myself heel flap socks. I will now do a sample of this pretty heal. One thing I will do is reinforce the knitting with the thin yarn that you get with Jawohl. Thanks again and keep on with no music.

You are my “go to” for a lot of knitting techniques. So patient and encouraging! I will admit in spite of your fabulous teaching, it took me a couple of days to “get” this. I watched, I ripped back so many times. Somehow I had the GSR twinning stitches stuck in my mind. Finally I saw what you were doing after the turn to the purl side ( I knit continental) and I got it! Thank you so much!

Thank you for this video! You made me realize I have been picking up the wrong leg of my knit stitches when making twin stitches on other short row heels, resulting in twin stitches that had been knit through the front and back. I couldn't figure out why one side never looked right, and now I know. Excited to try out the shadow wrap heel!
