True. It's a known fact that Nintendo has always catered to younger crowds. You can argue round and round about subtle differences between sound, graphics, framerates and bits. But at the end of the day, what it really comes down to is games and content. As kids we wanted to play violent games with gore, not bubble-gum games for kids, or even dumbed down beat-em-ups for teens. Aside from cross platform games and timed releases like Mortal Kombat; It's true the SNES (as well as its predecessor) had some "violent" games like Double Dragon and Final Fight, but Genesis had games like Streets of Rage, Robocop vs Terminator, The Punisher ('93), Splatterhouse, the Mutant League franchise, and a very underrated game called Cyborg Justice where there wasn't so much gore as there was weaponry, such as circular saws, flamethrowers, grinders, and the ability to rip body parts off, as well as an entire torso; even though technically all these things were being done to cyborgs. Still, it made for a very violent game that us kids back then could slip under even the toughest parent's radar at Blockbuster or Warehouse video stores (back when that was the only way to play games aside from waiting for birthdays or Christmas). Bottom line, Nintendo though it has its moments with some borderline adult oriented games, it never would touch what game developers were doing for Sega, and that why I preferred the Genesis.

Mortal Kombat 2 openned the door for Nintendo to have mature games on the SNES.

Mk3, UMK3 but there weren't many mature games in 16 bit era. For Genesis I can only remember Splatterhouse and MK.

They both feature the same awesome backgrounds, the fugly 3D Earthworm Jim in the levels' titlecards, no 3D effects on the houses in Puppy Love... The Nintendo fanboys are fanboys because they never owned a Sega. I was lucky to have had both in their heyday, and it was always about the unique games on each system. Genesis had the gritty, darker, more adult-oriented stuff like Road Rash, Shadowrun, or Splatterhouse, whereas SNES had the amazing party games like Super Mario Kart, Rock 'n' Roll Racing, and Secret of Mana.

SNES definitely had more power - but it came out later so I can't hold that against the Genesis / Mega Drive :P

Sega's Genesis had a faster CPU and was way better with any fast-paced game with lots of crazy action on screen. Alien Soldier, Ranger X, Dynamite Headdy and of course Contra Hard Corps, which is better, faster and funnier than Contra on the Snes. Snes was better at atmospheric rpgs. I also like the raw synthesizer sound of the Genesis

Not that I've played every RPG on SNES and Genesis, but the latter had three of my favorite RPGs of all time...Phantasy Star II, Shining Force, and Shadowrun. I've always felt like the Genesis has an excellent RPG library that very nearly matches the SNES's.

Jackson1701 There was the SVP chip but they only used it for Virtua Racing due to the expense. Also the SNES had superior graphics tech but its slug of a processor held it back next to the Motorola 68000 in the Genesis.

Alexis Gutierrez Worldwide yes, but that's only because of of the boost it got from how insanely well it sold in Japan coupled with how poorly the Mega Drive sold there. In most other regions including the Americas the SNES was behind. Ultimately both consoles sold ridiculously well. Who "won" doesn't matter and people should get over this console war and appreciate what all consoles at the time had to offer. Both consoles were winners for their respective companies.

WhenxChristxReturnsx Well, it's more complicated than that. You could say that Genesis had more sophisticated sound hardware. But it was harder to program for, and in practice, SNES games had much better sound. The point James and Mike are making is that for every legendary, top-tier Genesis game, you can probably find three or four legendary, top-tier SNES games, and graphics and sound don't really factor into this. And then you get into stuff about how Genesis had the best versions of Aladdin/Jurassic Park/Mortal Kombat, but those arguments don't really help the case for the Genesis, as it's sort of an "exceptions that prove the rule" thing.

BatmansButt Butler I get the impression that Mike hasn't spent too much time on the Genesis so I tend to take his opinions with a pinch of salt. Those who know the system well could find plenty of games that they feel trump any SNES title that's brought up. For instance some feel that Beyond Oasis trumps Link to the Past, many would feel that Phantasy Star IV trumps any 16 bit RPG period. It's just the Genesis games tend to have been played by less people so the SNES often wins out in debates like this, purely through ignorance of exactly what the Genesis has to offer, which is a shame. That said I see plenty of Genesis love on many of the more hardcore gaming channels, those in the know definitely know, I wouldn't include Mike and James in this particularly, they're just a couple of dudes who love games but their frame of reference seems pretty casual and fairly rose tinted by Nintendo, like a lot of people from that generation.

BatmansButt Butler Genesis's problem is its lack of great platforming and adventure games- there's no denying that. and the reality is the SNES probably had the best library of ANY console in the history of gaming Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Earthbound, Zelda: Link to the Past, FF III, Kirby Super Star, Super Metroid, Castlevania IV, F-Zero, Turtles in Time, Actraiser, Mega Man X - I mean that's a pretty sick list of classics

The SNES RPG lineup was the stuff of legends, not just CT. It defined the genre. If you don't like RPGs then it's not nearly as much of a domination for SNES.

CDs were the future. The Sega CD was an experiment and a stepping stone towards the next gen. And honestly it was a decent piece of kit, just before it's time and overpriced.

+Tony Spike Indeed and there's lot more gems on Mega Drive than I think they are eve aware of. They say the Mega Drive is all bout sports, but there's another very popular genre that you are way better set with Mega Drive than SNES, shooters (shoot 'em ups, sumps or what ever you want to call them), SNES had only a few and they suffered from ridiculous slow downs. If RPGs is what you want, then you are better with SNES, I'll admit that.

It's not just music either, several sound effects aren't even in the SNES version at all, and most sound just as good, if not better, on Sega.

Same here. Here in Ireland I didn't really know ANYBODY with a Snes. It was Mega Drive for everybody. I DEFINITELY knew nobody with a NES but that is because I'm only around 30 now (even though there are people younger than me on RU-vid that claim to be some sort of hardcore fan of NES when they COULDN'T have been).

Yes it had a lot of sports games but the games I mentioned (Eternal Champions, X-men and X-men 2, Adamantium Rage, etc) were pretty hardcore and not what a parent would particularly want for their kids. I am glad I made the choice with a Genesis as a teen, only 2 friends had an SNES and I thought the games were too remedial for my taste.

There's just no substance to genesis games. You can pretty much just appreciate them at face value. The RPGs on the SNES are in my opinion why the SNES is superior. They really made storytelling an integral part of gaming. Not just having a bullshit backstory to explain why you're shooting/punching/cutting up shit etc.

Glasses, greasy hair, overweight, D&D kind of guys. The rest enjoyed adventure style hack and slash, double dragon style side scrollers for the most part. Streets of Rage games were just WOW to us back then. Even today I cant do RPG too often. If its Skyrim YES maybe even Fallout. But definitely still hate Final Fantasy games. Do you want to attack? Do you want to defend? Do you want to run? I want to turn the game off -_-

I suspect James had never beaten the game, else he surely would have remembered that moment. ;) One of the finest examples of a "brick joke" I can think of.

It also flies by in the background in one of the later levels, I think the one with the tubes and the wonky diving bubble sub.

Dragon's Fury was the best pinball game of the time. Kid Chameleon was a very creative platformer with lots of replayability. Haunting starring Polyerguy is a fun unique game. Xmen2 Clone Wars is an epic action game. Lots of great shmups and I'm still forgetting several titles. Genesis had the superior library for sure.

Jacob Helou Nintendo leeches off a couple of great franchises that they keep coming back to, but outside of that there's just not much else. Look at the switch. Mario and Zelda are the only worthy nintendo produced titles for it. Yayyyy, same old same old. Snes was great for little kids, with colorful, cheerful games. But any gamer who really delves into the libraries of both Genesis and Snes realizes that Sega was far superior in providing diverse and creative entertainment for kids and adults.

+Jacob Helou I'd say that's a bit dismissive. It's all a matter of opinion of course, but I'd say the Mega Drive did the best it could, given how much was stacked up against it. While the SNES may have objective quality in spades, the Mega Drive was always more interesting and creative. When you look at the SNES's library, there's really only two standout genres: Platformers and PRG's. There might be a hardware-scaling "tech demo" here and there, like with Pilotwings for example, but that's mostly it. The system's dinky CPU clock speed didn't really allow for anything else without compromise. The Mega Drive, however, didn't put all of its eggs in one basket, and as such, covered a lot more ground. I'd say the Mega Drive gave every genre at least two or three whirls. If you liked Puzzle games, you had Puyo Puyo and Columns. If you liked RPG's, you had Phantasy Star, Shadowrun, and Shining Force. if you liked platformers, you had Vectorman, Pulseman, Kid Chameleon, and Ristar. If you liked Shmups, you had Gairies, Thunder Force, Truxton, Wings or Wor, and Elemental Master. If you liked Run-and-gun games, you had Twinkle Tale, Gunstar Heroes, and Alien Soldier. That's also not to bring up games that didn't really fit into one genre either. Games like Ecco the Dolphin, Sub Terrania, ToeJam & Earl are all unlike anything Nintendo would've put their resources into in a million years. Basically, if you're at all into retro gaming, and you're willing to venture into the depths of the library, you'll always find at least a few dozen games you want to play on the Mega Drive. As for the SNES, given that I'm not too into RPG's, and that a lot of the good playformers on the system go for woefully impractical prices online, I'd opt for the Mega Drive any day of the week.
