My Dad owns a commercial glazing company. Worked for him for a while,and if you take a broken tape measure and cut the tape measure in about 5 inch sections as you light the glass on fire,and bend down, you can use the corner of that cut piece of tape measure to help cut the laminate work amazing,and the curve on the tape fit nice to hold on with ur thumb. Also if it old glass,and you don't want to use a oil cutter, spray the section you are cutting with some wd40 . Will make a very nice easy cut

Also if you want a very nice grind and polish edge take a belt sander with with 600 grit for a nice finished edges

My mom used to work somewhere where she had to cut laminated glass all the time. Thanks for the video so I could have better understanding of how it’s done. It’s not too different than just plain glass cutting

Wrong! Wrong! Wrong again! 1) To much pressure on the cutter when scoring. This causes a "hot cut" causing tiny to come off the score edge which in turn may cause the cut to run away from the score. 2) Use carpet as a surface to cut on. Placing the glass on another piece of glass can cause it to get scratched by small debris between them. 3) When breaking the score, hold the sheet off the table with both hands. Then snap the score down over the edge to break the first layer. Then turn the sheet over and repeat that. Don't put any pressure by bending the vinyl layer before separating them. It can cause clamming of the edges which can cause a break. 4. You don't need to burn the alcohol to soften the vinyl. It's too easy getting burn when doing it. Many glaziers have been burned severely because of it. The alcohol will devolve the vinyl sufficiently enough to bend the sheet and cut off using a utility knife. I cut thousands of square feet of laminated glass while working as a journeyman glazier.

Johnnyred51 always great to hear from a professional. Deboss allows the average guy to have confidence to try this at home. I was thinking of buying an oil cutter but they're not as readily available.

You are absolutely correct. The only thing I would recommend is using denatured alcohol as it's simply just all around more pleasant to work with, and you only need to light the alcohol on fire with small pieces or intricate curved cuts that you don't want to bend and risk causing excess chipping to the edge.

@@AmosMosesJr Don't bother with oil cutter, they're not worth it. Red Devil or Fletcher is all you need. Crack the first cut before turn over and don't press so hard.

Putting alot of force on that cutter. Should apply force you can do with one hand (holding like a pencio). Also a drop of oil to make a smooth cut. Any oil will do.

Well done mate, just one pointer if you don't mind, brush some oil or white spirit on the glass where you are about to cut, this will lubricate the cut and I bet you notice the difference, you should not hear the cut spitting at you ! your cutter although cheap will also last longer.

A more precise way to heat the glass is by soaking a string with alcohol then place the string along the cut line and light it... this will keep the heat incredibly concentrated in the one spot instead over a large area....

this is gonna sound weird but another good thing for cutting lami is a broken tape measure. it's sharp enough to cut the laminate, and thin enough to get in and move without putting oyster shells in the edge of the glass. just a really cheap way to cut it with something most people put right into the trash 😉

I cringed watching the glass being scored, more when sliding glass on glass, and even more when rocking the glass to separate it. Terrible technique

Too much pressure on the cutter... When it sound pull it fast and easy ... You can put oil or paint thinner for smoother sound

Yes it is tempered. The only thing he got wrong is you need to give it a light tap on the edge with a hammer before splitting the sheet. This gives a cleaner cut

You´re front windshild is laminated, side windows..and rear is tempred glas.

As a owner and a glazier this is the worst way to cut laminate glass. First you are cutting to heavy and when you was pulling the glass apart it was scraping the glass and it made big chips on the edges. Worst demo ever.
