Well, note that he uses cathedral glass, which is pretty easy to cut into shapes. Opalescent glass is much harder to cut into complex shapes due to the different weight of the pigments used - eg. white is pretty stubborn to cut curved glass pieces. Basically opalescent glass has many different colors, all with different molecular weights and different tolerances for breaking.

Idk if your still interested but your need specialty carbide or diamond bits, then you jus do it slowly with even pressure and water for lubricant. Whilst turning the drill in circular motions. It helps, once u poke through one end to flip the glass around and drill from the other side to prevent oysters in the glass

It’s can be quite tricky to cut thicker glass as it’s heavier and harder to work with. I would suggest you take it to a professional glass cutter as you only have chance to get it right! Hope that’s helpful for you 🙏🙂

I use a pistol grip and that's not how I hold it. I wrap my fingers and thumb around the grip and place my index finger over the top pointing toward the wheel. I then place my other index finger on the flat part of the cutter just above the wheel. You can make seriously accurate cuts with no strain to your wrists or hands. 40 years doing what you are doing. I have taught quite a few people and they are into it now. I like some of your techniques. I have not seen them before and they are helpful. Thank you.

Hi Derek, excellent tutorial, many thanks. I have a query re your use of the wider head pliers at approx 08:43 when breaking the curved piece - it appears that the head of the pliers grip across the scoreline in order to break the glass which doesn't quite compute for me. It may be that I'm not observing correctly but I would have though that they would grip just one side of the line in order to do that. Subscribed btw, thanks Dave
@DerekHuntArtist
@DerekHuntArtist Год назад
If you are using the large breaking pliers, the jaws of the pliers span across the score line and apply even pressure to the top of the glass. The bottom of the pliers apply a pressure directly on the score line, which help to create the neat fracture into two pieces. Thanks so for the subscription!

I can generally cut rectangles with only 25% failure rate, but tried it so many times with smooth wavy lines, 50% failure rate. Tried scoring lighter, harder, deeper, multiple or singular. Tried tapping from behind gently, again or harder tapping, still many fail. Tried thin glass, thicker glass, mirror glass, new tool cutter, old tool cutter. Guess I just have to have many attempts to get a few good ones out. Odd, I am usually good picking up techniques from drawing to woodworking but glass always challenges me.

My cutter is diamond not tungsten wheel . Are diamond cutters OK?
@DerekHuntArtist
@DerekHuntArtist 8 месяцев назад
Interesting - I haven’t used a diamond cutter to cut glass sheet. Does it work well?
@oz93666
@oz93666 8 месяцев назад
well it seems to work OK , but I'm no expert . I had problems with tungsten wheel ( I didn't realize you had to oil it lol) , There seems no price difference between the two , if I had to guess , diamond cutters became feasable recently with availability of cheap industrial diamonds used also in cheap core drills etc ... Of course no need for oil with diamond no mess , put "diamond glass cutter " in RU-vid search ... great video by the way. @@DerekHuntArtist

You sometimes need to cut forwards as you need to see the shape to cut. If you cut backwards your hand can cover the shape 🙂

If you ran a glass cutter on bullet resistant glass a few times, then fire a few rounds into the glass, then attempt to kick the glass, would the glass hold? Or would it fail? If it would fail, how thick would the glass need to be to prevent entry?
@DerekHuntArtist

Unfortunately I can’t answer your question. Specialist glass types such as Bullet proof glass and fire resistant glass have technical advisers who specialise in answering these questions🙂

I’m a professional glass cutter. And it’s like all the sudden I forgot how to cut glass. A lot of my cuts have been skipping and I can’t see why. I clean the glass, make sure the cutter is oiled, have a brand new cutter head. And keep my glass cutter straight. And I’m jus bamboozled as to why I’m having so many problems all the sudden. Any advice?
@ianbrinkley5968
@ianbrinkley5968 5 месяцев назад
I’m wondering if it has anything to do with the temperature possibly. Ik it’s easier to cut when glass is warm and it’s recently gotten cold in the shop
@DerekHuntArtist
@DerekHuntArtist 5 месяцев назад
Hi Ian, that’s a tricky question. Sounds like you’re doing everything right by cleaning the glass and oiling the cutter head. Sometimes I find a new glass cutter head can take a little while to get settled into its job. Check to make sure the cutting wheel doesn’t have any damaged areas ( if it was dropped onto a hard surface that can cause small damage to the edge of the wheel) What make of cutter are you using?
@ianbrinkley5968

@@DerekHuntArtist I’m not 100% sure what brand it is. And I changed my grip to between the fingers instead of like a pencil and that’s helped a lot. So I think my problem was inconsistent pressure. Glass can be so finicky.

I seem to not getting to cut in a straight line even tho I’m using a guide of a ruler
@DerekHuntArtist
@DerekHuntArtist 5 месяцев назад
Perhaps start cutting the line slowly and make sure the cutter remains up against the straight edge as you move it down the glass. If your lines are not straight the cutter is not always up against the straight edge.

Nice video but tapping the glass from underneath when cutting a sheet to size, its going to end up with an extremely sharp and not a straight corner, its fine for rough work but needing to fit glass into a frame for the likes… it might not fit, and that’s the part of the glass you will cut yourself off
@DerekHuntArtist
@DerekHuntArtist 2 года назад
I agree with you Chaoimhin, however tapping the underside is useful when introducing glass cutting to beginners. Some glass types are harder to cut than others, so tapping the underside is worth demonstrating to beginners. 🙂

If I don't hear the scratching while scoring the glass, does that mean I'm not holding the cutter correctly?
@DerekHuntArtist
@DerekHuntArtist Год назад
Some glass types don’t make much of a sound, especially opal glass. The main thing is to create a good score across the glass with the right pressure. Try on 3mm clear window glass first to get the feel of it 👍🏼🙂

I guess you are working with new glass all the time. How about cutting old glass, I was told it is not worth even trying... for example, pieces salvaged from a greenhouse, so "horticultural" glass that I wanted to trim and fit into a smaller greenhouse.
@DerekHuntArtist
@DerekHuntArtist 7 месяцев назад
I have not found it useful to try cutting up old greenhouse glass. It’s often dirty and stained, and can be difficult to cut. Better to buy new 👍🏼

I’m a glass cutter by trade.I never wore gloves while cutting,you can’t get the feel.When you make a cut you don’t have to tap underneath,just pinch the glass either side of the cut and snap the glass.Using oil is very dangerous it will make the glass slippery.Turpentine should be used.
@DerekHuntArtist
@DerekHuntArtist 8 месяцев назад
Hi Lynette, thanks for your feedback. Generally I don’t wear gloves either but it’s important to recommend gloves for those learning glass cutting for the first time. Tapping glass is necessary when cutting complex shapes, especially when making stained glass. Using oil or no oil is a personal preference. 🙂
