Thank you very much. I was sitting here thinking that I was going to have to cut out the middle piece, and you just confirmed that for me. As a bonus tip, I just used a 6mm quarter inch drive deep socket to help me press the linkage through the clip. I put the clip in place, put the 6mm on top of it, and held it firmly in place while I pushed the linkage through into the 6mm socket, and everything snapped together perfectly.

I think you are asking what position should you put the gear selector?
