I just found the answer to my question in the previous posts. So the answer is yes you apply your thin set over the Hydro Ban and install the tile. Excellent thanks for this video and actually all the other videos you have uploaded.
@@cieslaolsztyn8266 Concrete remains porous and not very water proof when dry. Special mixes and techniques are used when concrete has to be waterproof, like in a dam. The motarbed is not water proof either. When you shower water penetrates the grout, goes into the motarbed and down the drain.
@@vids595 So this Hydro Ban is only because of the drypack? Does he use drypack only because its esyer to make a slope on the floor? I bet there are many showers with tiles fixed right on the concrete without any mambrane..no problem
I used this (packed the curb and floor myself) and did the corners with laticrete membrane tape because that was my biggest worry. It passed a 48 hr flood test and it's been used daily for almost two years
@@wmars4655 I actually didn't use mesh I used membrane tape made by laticrete which is also who makes hydroban. that way I know the products are compatible with each other
I use the fabric with mapei aquamembrane and it surprisingly withheld the water test for 2 days. First time made me nervous, but now I'm standing by it. They even made the membrane a light blue so you can see your marks and lines when you lay tile
This is the best way to do it. I have made a stainless steel shower pan and glued the floor tiles in the pan. Cement will always flush away and you get leaks. We have a product called " DACFILL " equal to hydro ban. Normally used for roofs. Our show is now more than 16 years without leaks.
You need to apply sica flex in the corners cement bed and the wall sheets move independently of each other therefore hydro band by itself will tear and then you will have a water leak ..tiler from Australia
Laticrete approves using hydroban without banding in changes of plane with a gap less than 1/8" and seams in hydroban board the same. But I agree the extra sealant underneath like latisil or sika flex or using the Hydroban fabric in the corners is ideal
@@chapothakid5080 i wouldn't recommend red guard on the bottom of the of the pan only on vertical surfaces like walls on vertical and horizontal seems. Red Guard is an OK product but i would never use it to water proof shower pans. I have both products but only use hydro ban for pans cuz its pretty much bullet proof if properly applied.
@@RaulCojocariu how far up the wall would you recommend going with hydro ban? And can I go up 3ft and then redguard the rest of the way?🤣 trying not to break my little piggy.
@@jessicawilkerson9687 the cheaper way of doing it is to use denshield board instead of durarock , green board etc. The denshield has rubber on it already, use that at least 6ft high all around then get the fibafuse drywall tape and with hydroban put it on all joints and corners, with painting brush u apply hydro on the joints put the tape on the the joint and continue putting more on top untill u incapsulate the tape in the membrane. I like to use two coats on it and the u just put liquid membrane on the screw heads only. This should save you some. But to answer you question yes it can be done like you said. Redguard is not recommended on flat surfaces where water could pool like shower pans, even shower curbs, hydro is a much more superior product as its used in swimming pools as, with all this said you can use redguard to seal the joints on the wall as well just make sure that tape is well covered with the liquid membrane so its protected from the cement.
@@jessicawilkerson9687 I had the EXACT same question. Already have redguard and used a little on other projects, but now seeing this method, and having bought a flofx drain kit from tilecoach, I'm leaning toward hydroban. As yourself, thinking of the budget, wanted to use the redguard on the walls.
Great product one of the best. I highly recommend using the 9235 anti fracture membrane with 9235 / hydro ban / hydro barrier when waterproofing a shower pan despite Laticrete tolerance.
@@silverlion5384 hydro ban applied liberal , lay in the anti fracture membrane, hydro ban applied to top coat. Make aware to have extrusion of hydro ban through anti fracture.
We use a lot of liquid applied membranes in Australia Isaac. This method is similar to what we do here, however we generally caulk in a fillet/bead of sealant on all internal corners prior to applying the liquid membrane (or sometimes a special bandage is used), this acts as a "bond breaker" allowing the liquid membrane to release and move Independently of the fillet/bead in areas of movement (eg at a wall to floor junction, or where 2 different substrates meet etc). We can also speed up the installation process by applying a water based epoxy primer over the bed the day after it has been installed, this epoxy coat acts as a "moisture/vapour barrier" allowing you work over the moist bed the next day, then you apply your liquid membrane the day after that. (No waiting 3 days for the bed to dry).
It isn't a tip so much as a requirement for most (all?) class 3 membranes, to have a bond breaker at all joints and including over any screw holes. Apperently using the fibreglass reinforcing tape with a class 3 reduces it to a class 1 membrane as it can no longer flex as designed. Also check requirements as most require a primer for proper adhesion... enjoy
I used this approach a couple years ago. I don’t know why more people don’t use this on single slope mortar beds. At the time I was researching it, a lot of people were kind of freaked out with with the “risk” of a roll on membrane with no redundancy.
@@tryan7 Exactly, some companies are very proud of thier chemicals. I bet the bucket, label etc. costs more than the chemical. You just have to know they make the chemicals in huge vats, bet $2 a gallon max...
Great video. It would help if you show in the text what went on when. Example: Subfloor plywood followed by Durock Cement board followed by dry pack and membrane. Walls: Durock cement board followed by mesh in the corners, followed by liquid membrane. I try to write it all down and have to replay the video over and over to make sure I got it all. But your teaching is just great. Thanks.
I think the way the other guy does it as a pan in your old red guard video works out much better, even when using hydro ban. with a watered down primer coat then two thinner more even coats, but to each there own
Well, I've already learned several things. I bought and applied the Red Guard....so fingers crossed. I've only applied 1 gal....which did not cover my entire shower and walls. Our shower is 60"x36" with a slab floor circa 1967, and the drain is less than 8" from the wall. I already put another layer of Sand Mix and graded by using a laser at the perimeter. The grade is approximately 1" to the top of the Oatey 3 part drain. So here's hoping I pick enuf info from your videos. Thanks for the time you do making the videos. I hope my own home job will be a success...never done tile. House framing, yes, with lots of experience. My real conconcern is transition to the level sides of drain using my wife's selection of 1'x2' tiles coming in at an angle with the 60" grade slope.... again, this could be a fail in the making....
Very nicely done 👍 my biggest pain point with mud beds is the wait time before applying waterproofing. I need to re-examine my procedure on a full bath remodel in order to do it. waiting 3 days before applying liquid waterproofing is too long for me…. Do you ever use the quick cure mud from laticrete? I’m guessing you could apply hydroban the first day with that? Great tutorial 👍
I prefab when I don't have time too wait on cure times. It's not hard but most people don't think about it or don't know it's an option but if you can build it in place you can build it at the shop

I’m preparing to replace a garden tub with a shower, and this video provided the perfect method that seems to be a balance of ease of construction and effective waterproofing. Wish you would have included the water test though.
This is not the right way to do a shower pan install by any means there’s so many things he did wrong and that are against code where do I start? No pre-pitch under that shower membrane so when water leaks through to the shower membrane, it’ll sit there in puddles instead of being escorted to the shower drain, weep holes like it is designed to do Then he screwed holes in the shower pan membrane below curb level, with his dry pack for beginners idea. which is again a no-no and then finally putting the expensive ass roll-on membrane on top of the dry pack, which is counterintuitive to what it’s supposed to be doing. The whole job is wrong from start to finish people that make these videos on RU-vid. I think they just pick a niche read up on it and think they’re a professional when in fact, giving false and very bad information that could potentially cause major leak and major damage to your home where is his license, because if he had one, he would know all this very dangerous to listen to people like this call a professional you get what you pay for remember
@@StephenMcDonough-eg5nm With all due respect, you are way behind the times in shower pan technology. There is no pre-slope because using Hydro ban prevents water from ever getting down to the dry pack. And a flow FX drain doesn't even have weep holes. He drilled holes when making the slope because the membrane went over top of the holes in the form of Hydro ban. I would suggest that you put a little time into researching some of these new techniques. They would save you a lot of effort and headache.
Yeah, it will show me the code book where it says that that’s allowed just because you say it is doesn’t make it true why even put a shower pan and if that’s the case what do you need a shower pan for if that’s so great I’m gonna go with. It’s not as a plumber for a zero entry shower that means with no curb. You’re allowed to make a pen from the red guard but in that situation, you still have to pre pitch it. and do a water test for your inspection which I’m sure that what you’re doing you don’t pull permits or have inspections done because you know more than everyone else good luck again nothing personal I just don’t think you should be giving advice that’s not correct especially like I said before screwing screws below the curve line into the shower pan why would you do that? You have to know that that’s against code and not just against code was just wrong and every which way OK good luck take care.
We use rubber roofing membrane before we even lay our durok. We put rubber in the corners and on the shower floor before we even lay the mortar for the shower bed.
I don't believe the method described in this video is approved by the NTCA. The correct method on a wood floor is, cementitious sand mix add sparing water to hold shape when squeezed in hand, 3/4" @ drain, sloped up 1/4" per ft to walls with NO low spots that can puddle water, Let Dry. Install pan liner per manufacturer instructions, finish with the final sand mix, maintaining 1/4" per foot slope, let dry, then tile as per NTCA. (plenty of videos on the process.) Many people believe tile is water proof, It's NOT. The area behind tile in a shower needs to be waterproofed to keep water inside the area and down INTO the pan liner.
This is how to do a shower with no pvc pan liner, and no preslope. With a liquid applied waterproofing.so the water stays on top and goes down the drain instead of traveling through the mud into the pan and out of the drain weep holes.
Thicker membrane can stretch much more than thin membrane, Stretching a membrane causes it to thin, as it elongates across the future crack in the structure. so a 1 mill membrane can stretch 3 mill, but a 0.3 mill membrane can stretch only 1 mill before tearing. I think the...tiler from Australia, David Otway, has a good point. The flexible filler in the corners creates more room to move for the membrane.

Can you do a demonstration of how these liquid membranes can stretch after they have set. Say painting over a crack between two cement boards and then pulling them apart after they have set??? These surface membranes may be a very good second waterproof barrier that keeps the majority of the water out of the mortar bed. Then if dampness happens in the mortar bed, then the smells will not be a problem in the room, as the source is below the top membrane. Should a leak form then it will need to get around 2 waterproof barriers and the volume of water would be extreme small as the water rapidly runs off the floor tiles. Love your work.
You need a bridge between the two surfaces like sica flex or hydro band recommend a bandage to bridge the crack you can even use masking tape which acts as a slip joint

I'm not exactly sure if I understand but I'd like to chime in. While there is always some movement (extremely minimal), your question boils down to your substrate. If there's movement in the substrate do not start a tile project as wall board, waterproofing and even drypack is not meant to provide structural strength. As long as your substrate is structurally sound and your wall board is installed correctly your waterproofing will be sound. It all starts with the substrate. Tape ALL of your seams and corners (also where your drypack meets the wall board) with the appropriate mesh tape and thinset, then roll away with your membrane.
Will I be ok if I did this but instead I’ll install Kerdi sheet membrane first then sealed that with hydro ban? I’m a little nervous doing this which is why the idea.
Good Day thank you for all of your videos. I am a DIY home owner. I am getting ready to gut my bathroom entirely to have the slopping floor repaired by a professional. And, I will be replacing the bathtub/shower with a tiled shower with a high curb ... so my toddler grandchildren can still bath. I have been watching your videos for over a month and have learned a lot. Thank you so much. BUT... I get confused when you talk about different systems, different grout products, using pans or using dry pack, using tapes for seams, water proofing products. How. as a first timer. can I choose products that will work together and last?
You definitely got this idea from my past posts or others over the years. Hydro ban is exactly like Mapei HPG. NOT AQUA DEF BUT HPG. WHAT YOUR NOT DOING CORRECTLY ON THIS VIDEO IS THAT YOUR 100% WATERPROOFING THE TOP PAN. THAT'S WHY YOU DON'T USE THE FLOFLEX ANYMORE. I have personal videos how permabase, Mapei HPG & 3PC (Neo drain) pans with Ebbe riser wheeps. I also left you comments over the yrs about living in Carmichael sub of Sac. Went to Pasadena Elementary, Churchill Jr High & Mira Loma HS.
The hydroban literature from hydroban states a clamp style drain must be used. Is there an updated document that says this drain attachment method is approved?

I just watched your video where you demonstrated the porous dry pack allowing water to seep through and drain out the weep holes. But now you are excluding that feature by waterproofing the top of the dry pack? What method is better?
That was a really good video Isaac !! I am about to undertake my alcove shower 36" x 60" on concrete slab. I like that you are current with the new technology!! I am right here in Rocklin, Ca and would enjoy talking to you about your recommendations. Leave me a comment if I can come by or reach out to you. Appreciate it. Your videos keep getting better and better!! Thanks for sharing
Regarding your pro tip.... I keep a roll of seranwrap or klingwrap handy for my brushes and rollers works way better than a plastic bag at keeping air out and not drying them out....less messy too. I've had rollers last months when klingwraped and stuck into a roller case.. and you don't need to wash the case !..(roller cases are crap at air sealing , and a pain in the ass to clean, on thier own)
Question? The Sacrete floor mud states that if its not tiled in 24 hours then you have to wait 28 days for it to fully cure. If I have to wait a minimum of 3 days to apply the hydro Ban then do I actually have to wait 28 days to apply and or tile?
Shouldn't you seal the joints between the drain flange and dry pack with tape? It seems like that is the area most likely to leak. Love your channel and videos. Awesome unbiased content, Isaac.
@Always Vacationing Question since I will giving this set up a try in our tiny house build next weekend. By seal you mean using mortar such as multimax lite and tape around the FloFx drain before applying the Hydro Ban?
@rolanddelacruz6440 that's exactly what he means but the liquid membrane is taking the place of the sheet membrane so either way its still waterproofing weather it's sheet or just liquid membrane
Once the hydro ban is installed, what do u use to apply tile? I know the parent company has a three part epoxy adhesive, but could u use anything else? Will you put out a video to show how to tile over the hydro an liquid?
Let me get this right. You build your mud pan, paint the hydro ban directly to the mud, then apply thin set directly to the hydro ban to lay the tile? Just trying to understand this concept. Love all of your very informative videos. Keep up the great tutorials.
Hi Issac this is the method I am going to use for our shower I was wondering what you used in the corners and over the screw holes before you applied the hydro-ban ?
Tile coach. Your work is excellent. One thing you failed to mention is the cost of the 5 gallon bucket. $429.00 usd. It should be totally waterproof at that price.
Fantastic stuff Isaac! You have been the most helpful source for tile DIY I have found - so thank you! Quick question. Would you recommend adding dry pack if the cement floor already has appropriate slope to the drain? Obviously the dry pack serves the water in water out method. Is it necessary when applying the liquid membrane over the tile pan? Can I skip that step and apply the membrane directly to the concrete?
I think applying the dry pack over existing sloped cement floor is how high is the drain that you are finishing to? If its flush with the cement, then no mud bed would be needed. Just clean the concrete very well and go for it. If you are addind a drain body, then the necessity for a mud bed is obvious. Apply membrane up and over the curb etc.
I noticed that Aqua-Defense dissolves in water!! I was shocked to see it soften and turn to mush if water sits on it. Does Hydro-ban dissolve with water? I think a side-by-side comparison would be an awesome video.
Is seam tape not required on the changes of plane with hydro ban? I know redgard says you can use it without tape but I always do anyway I like the extra piece of mind that the corners are strong with the tape and I also tape and thinset all my joints and corners prior to waterproofing I like to have my corners as strong and sealed as possible.
Your correct using the tape or you can use sica flex in the corners to ..the tile coach showed an incorrect method by not using anything in the corners his method will fail with any movement of the wall or floor

I did this method over a foam pan and it blistered badly during the water test. I had to tear it all up and use sheet membrane. Followed the directions exactly. Two coats at proper mil thickness checked with a gauge. Temperature at 60 degrees and humidity at 50% controlled by a dehumidifier. I let the hydroban turn colors and then waited another 24 hours before applying the second coat. Did the same wait after the second before water testing. Blistered after about 24 hours into the 48 water test. Laticrete was no help. Search online turned up several results of this happening to others.
It seems like it's more viscous than redguard or the other green guard stuff. Have you being the great craftsman that you are being form northern Cali. Have you ever watched Kirk Giordano plastering omg thousands of videos, on plastering, a few on showers. But if you get a calmness, out of watching someone, professionally, lay bricks, plaster, drywall compound, concrete and your dry bed. You will also enjoy his videos. But if not either way this is a great video man, I appreciate it as I will be doing this job in the next month. You videos are amazing I haven't worked since 10/10/21 b/c I've had a 6 heart attacks, 8 stents and possibly cancer now, I'm praying not. But I just kind of take it 1 day at a time. I'm in the disability process now which i'm not confident in and it takes forever. Meanwhile you have now income. I have my 1 son 20 years old, he kind of paying bills to keep my head above water and my other son is 17 he does most of the chores as I can't even bend over and get back up. God Idk how you do it to tile your always on your knees. I(competed internationally in ju-jit su and kickboxing and my knees are destroyed, I even lifted weights for years and ran b/c I was police for 5 years, so my legs I kept in very good shape. But I know your in great shape but I hope you knees are good, as you do such amazing and professional work. Great video as always!
So which is it? Hydro Ban liquid membrane or Revolutionary membrane with thin set? One video says thin set is no good, but then I watch you put in a shower with a membrane and thin set. Confused.
So you prefer Hydroban to Flex Seal? I'm learning so much from you, thanks. Pretty sure now I will need a plumber to deal with the situation I have with the drain. But after that, I can rock.
How about also using the Laticrete Waterproofing Membrane 6" for the corners and along the perimeter? I've seen people doing that. Or is it not recommended if you don't have cracks greater than 1/8"? I am about to use the same waterproofing on my mortar bed but now I question the usefulness of the corner membrane.

Sometimes I've seen you use fabric in the seams and corners with Hydroban and sometimes you don't. Should I use it for extra protection or is that just wasting money?
Might be a dumb question…but could you just put some kind of sealer or coating over top that to finish it off? Or would that cause problem later on down the road when you had the time and money to tile?
Hey, I've been binge watching your videos, they're awesome! I paid someone to build a shower for me, but noticed the tile was crooked, so I got a second opinion on the work and discovered that the entire build was done incorrectly and would have leaked everywhere :( Now I'm trying to figure out if I can save some money and do it correctly all by myself...but I have a question that I never hear people talk about in videos like this... What is the correct way to dispose of the wastewater and excess material? The guys I hired poured red guard wash water into my front yard, that doesn't seem like the right way to dispose of it, but pouring it down the city drain seems wrong too, so I'm wondering how do professionals clean their tools and dispose of waste water in a responsible way? Thank you from Austin, TX!
Would I be able to use this method with a plywood subfloor? The order I would do it would be felt paper on top of subfloor, metal stucco netting, mortar bed with slope, and then finally hydro ban My concern is the moister being trapped between the mortar bed and felt paper Thank you to anyone who can help in advance
I'm curious why in this video you say that you don't need to use any reinforcing fabric in the corners but in the previous video I just looked at you installed reinforcing fabric?
I let a contractor go because I wasn't comfortable with the quality of work where he installed the Oatey liner and the concrete bed. I say concrete because rather than the cement & sand mix generally recommended by sakrete and in all of the videos I've found, he used premix concrete. So the top is gravelly rather than smooth. He also cut the Oatey liner on the inside of the curb about a half inch below the top rather than wrapping it over as a single piece. His stated intention was to wrap it with Schluter membrane. Finally, because he was going to use a colored epoxy on the concrete bed rather than tile, he set the drain cover into the cement rather than leaving a gap above the cement. Ugh!! I'm comfortable with the Oatey liner under the concrete but I'm wondering if I should Hydro Ban over the concrete surface if I try to raise the drain and tile the floor. I'd rather not jackhammer out the new pan and start over if I can save it. Love your videos and the intelligent guidance. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance.
Hey Isaac your videos are awesome and has inspired me to tile my shower first of all I have 42 and a half inches is the longest point a drain what would be the correct measurement for packing my pan and does hydro ban liquid membrane recommend flease vans around the pan up the wall
Never done a shower before but I’m trying to do my research and I’m loving your videos! I’ve seen other projects that go: pre-slope/liner/dry-pack/tile…does your method of a single dry pack layer topped with hydro ban accomplish the same thing? Thanks in advance for your advice!
No it’s completely a waste of time and money that stuffs not cheap and it should always have a pre-slope underneath the shower pan that’s code just about everywhere I know what that does any water that does it get below the tile grout in dry pack and gets down to the actual shower, remembering itself with that pre-pitch. It takes the water on the pan and runs it down to the drains weep holes which is the way it’s designed purposely to do so with no pre-pitch what I will just sit in a little puddles on the pan and eventually that a crack your dry pack, and your tile
Don't listen to the naysayers. No pre-slope is required because hydro-ban does not allow water to contact the mortar bed at all. I finished a huge shower just as this video shows and it turned out great.
Don’t listen to this person then he’s already giving you bad advice by Tony The screw holes in your shower pan below the allowed height by code and then it’s telling you not to put in a pre-pitch which if he pulls any kind of permits for his jobs like he supposed to Fill fail every time so I’m gonna say he probably doesn’t pull permits Desi. Do you want to pay for something like that and take the risk that this person is smarter than the engineers at Oetay then by all means, follow his lead. I’m not trying to be negative. I’m just trying to help you out deal with it what you will
Hi,you are supposed to wet sponge the bed and cement sheet before applying the hydroban and also use membrane silicone on all junctions.I am a tiler 35 yrs experience
Whats your favorite shower system? I was taught with oatey pvc liner for the pan over pre slope mortar bed, then a second bed of mortar. Concrete board on walls that goes over the liner, backer seams done with tape and thinset, then redgard on walls. It doesnt seem like a bad system, but its time consuming with all the drying time. I've done a few online courses for Wedi and Kerdi, do you use one of these normally? I want to try one of them out for a shower I'm doing but I'm not sure which, leaning Kerdi. As always, your videos are great, keep up the good work.
I have been enjoying the info in your videos. Do you have any videos on replacing a fiberglass shower shell with a foam pan and some of the issues you might run into?
Okay..HydroBan is the best. It is also 3x the price of other products. Thoughts on using HydroBan on the shower pan and up an few inches along the walls and then using DuRock liquid membrane (1/3 the price of HydroBan) on the CBUs? I've got a large 36"x72" shower and would like to save a little $$. Both products are water-based, therefore should be compatible. Good idea?
This looks so easy, why do people chose to use a membrane fabric over this method? Seems to me this works well, easier to apply and cheaper. Also, could you use this method first and then for pre caution use fabric tape membrane in the corners and seems? Or the other way around use fabric membrane on seems then use this liquid over the top?
I think professional tile installers can put up a membrane even faster and you don't need to worry about making a layer that is a particular thickness because it's a sheet.
TILE Coach hi and thank you for being there.. So I watched quite a few of your videos where you floated the walls ..... and it did not seemed as you have applied the hydro to the over duroc float and did mention that it was ready for thin set and tile.... I am curious what you recommend for 12 x 24 marble tile installation .... what duroc thickness or if matters or not we probably too want to follow your system in floating the walls but once done should we use hydro ? does it matter what thickness duroc to use when flowing anyway>? please advise and be blessed. I will definitely share your channel and video from now on. I have subscribed as well

What happens when you scratch all of that hydroban with a notched trowel as you apply and comb out the mortar? Once scratched, how thin does it become? Is there a way to guage? Once becoming scratched up and what assurance do you or the manufacturer make as to how waterproof it is??
love the videos I"M in the process of building a shower the drain is offset from center per customer specs I"M using quickcrete sand topping mix as my drypack mud its over plywood so I have my pan liner and telescopic drain installed I put the durarock down about a half inch from the panliner as not to hurt the liner with a sharp edge so after installing the mud bed because of the offset drain where its two feet from the wall the picth is great where its a four feet from the wall the picth isnt quite enough could I install some 1/4 inch dura rock just along the perimiter as a screed point and use mape large format wall thin set to skim coat from the 1/4 inch board down to nothing to increas my slope then hydro ban the whole shower will the hydro ban work over the thin set as it would over the dry pack
About 5-6 years ago I had to waterproof 12 pans at a Ritz Carlton in Laguna Beach. Engineer called for no hot Mop ( surprise that's what I do) so I used hydro an and a 48" polyester mat and did it just like hot Mop, and it turned out really good. Expensive as shit, but no leaks so I assume it worked.
How do I know my deck is hard/stable enough? Not quite 24 hrs, but I’m just a bit nervous. That’s the hardest thing that I have ever done. I’m a 62 year old female and I mixed everything myself. It took me about 1.5 hrs, mixing and all, as my shower is 68 x 32 and it’s my first time doing this. I was worried about taking too long, getting it in, but I kept testing the mud consistency and it stayed consistent. I just want to ensure I’m good before moving forward. Bed top is a little sandy on top, but just a dusting.
