I still race at 64 on YZ 450 and a regular at Murphys MX and I told myself before I hang up the boots I will learn how to whip. I want to be the only 60 plus C/D Novice that can throw a half ass whip at least. I believe the way you are going about this is probably the best tutorial I have seen on RU-vid Thanks Hey! you never know when the grim reaper is going to show up at my age so I better try while I still can, Right!
62 with a large belly and an ego to go with it. Teaching my grandson how to ride and I want to make him as good as he can be. Racing today is a lot different that it was when I was in my 20's.
You explained this really well! Coming from mountain biking, I was unsure how similar whipping a dirt bike would to a mtb considering a mtb is 1/5 your weight and a dirt bike is heavier than you. You made this very simple and easy to understand. I'm going to take these tips to the track! Thanks!
OMG!! FINALLY someone explains this in the simplest way. I've watched countless vids and been tentatively trying this but all the time thinking ...it cant be that technical can it? This is a great starting point to safely developing this skill - thanks for a great explanation!
@@RatchetGamingNation I only tried it a couple of times but I ended up fracturing my shoulder (not doing this but went over the bars on a downhill) ….8 months later Im still not back on the bike
1000% on the part about landing on the gas!!! Super important! I used to be a super timid rider (still am but I'm better). Every time I inevitably got a bit sideways in the air I'd get scared, land with no throttle, and crash. Don't get scared! Grab a hand full of throttle and 97 times out of 100 it'll pull you through. I've never learned how to whip but I can't wait to try this! I now have many years practicing landing sideways so I think I'm good. Thanks!
Thank you Tyler, this video has really helped I have only been trying to learn to whip for a week and am already seeing results! The feeling loose in the air could not be more true. I have even been throwing my inside leg out a little bit and it is helping. Once again thanks a lot.
After figuring out to do moto whips on a Bmx, this is literally explained it so well. Same motions and feeling on the lip. I’m gonna show this to many people that wonder ask me how to whip
Back in 07 I was breaking in a new bike and was trying to whip and I tensed up it like a mental block land short and I squeezed my knees to tight and on the gas I crashed and broke my tibia and snapped my acl so bad that it didn’t tear but ripped of the bone where it connects! The docs got me hooked on pain meds bc of their botched surgeries! Hardest thing I’ve ever done was as getting sober! So listen guys he knows what he’s talking about!
Tyler! Thanks to God you've back. Shit, man, I thought you went out. Last couple of videos you seemed depressed and it was so sorry to see your condition
Just wondering because I'm newish to riding but you say grip with your knees how do you do that without it being to tense to let the bike continue it's movements
What i saw in mxgp, if they do not a whip to the fully extend with shifting weight and run curves to the face of the jump, they give a short strike, an impact to the handlebars to one side an going back, to a least give it a little lean angle. That can be seen on a bunch of riders.
I think that’s more of a scrub if you’re talking about smaller sized jumps. Usually when I see that they’re trying to keep the suspension from releasing and springing the bike higher in the air. I’ve been dabbling around with trying to learn that since I mostly ride woods and don’t need it on big jumps but being able to do those little scrubs and get the tires back on the ground would be a good skill to have.
I’m confident enough to whip the bike, but i am afraid about it not being able to return straight. how do you let the bike come back to forward position?
'Grab it as you land' is my understanding. You'd probably hit the rev limiter if you just kept the throttle as it was when you hit the jump, while you're still in the air. When I do any jump, I let off the throttle at 'launch' and start to bring it (throttle) back up, right before I land, so that when I'm hitting the landing area I'm NOT neutral, need to have that engine pushing the machine, the way bikes are engineered that not too many talk about is that they 'want' to or are inclined to straighten the front wheel while under power ( also to a slightly lesser extent when coasting), when you land under power, you are encouraging the geometry of the bike to straighten out. Another thing that tends to keep the front wheel straight, as in sliding down a hill is back brake, whether actual brake or engine braking, that has a huge influence on straightening out the front wheel while going downhill, coasting however, can be an absolute disaster.
I have a question so when I’m in the air side ways do I have to correct the bike I’m the air with my body or will the bike correct itself with the centrifugal force of the motor and wheels?
What are we doing with the throttle in the air? Staying in the throttle or letting off the throttle on the face and then getting back on the throttle to bring the bike back straight?
Is it safe to brake tap in the middle of a whip. Like if you feel you’re going very nose high but you’re already in the whip. I’ve started doing small/medium size whips and I brake tapped once because I was a little nose high and worked out ok. But I’m curious if I got lucky or not
im confused. you say let the bike do its thing but then you say at the first attempts youre gonna land sideways. so i guess im doing some corrections as i become more familiar or its a matter of precise lean angle at the face of the jump?
Hey enjoyed the whip video Is the whip used to slow your landing speed or the height u might get if u don’t whip Ps I’m from the land down under loving your channel 👍❤️🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇺🇸

I don’t understand the physics of how the backend is starting to come around, but then this switches and the front end then regains the lead and the back end falls back into line. Can someone explain?
Hey Tyler, I have been scrubbing some small jumps and landing pretty sideways even when I'm not tensing up, could that just be the jump is too small? It doesn't happen on big jumps
@@TheMxFactory So in other words; man the fuck up? As an older rider it would still be helpful to to start small and work our way up to it. If you could do a vid for us geezers on picking a smallish suitable type of jump that would be cool. Unless that's what this vid is, lol! Either way, all good! Awesome video, and I'll figure it out eventually. Just trying to do it without a trip to the hospital and 6 months downtime.
@@SEILLC jumps infront of big downhills are ideal for practicing any kind of tricks, you can hit it slow without coming up short or pin it without the chance of overshooting the landing, more comfortable you get the faster you can hit it which in return means more air time to perfect the whip 🤘
I nearly crashed my bike in a jump gave it to much gas and forgot to squeeze my knees but then I remembered and whipped it so I was laying against the seat and ripped it back straight again Oh my was it a rush
Most important when jumping, whether whipping or not, is to be neutral on the takeoff which means your body weight is centered with the bike weight wise. Centre of bike weight wise is not the middle of the bike but more in line with the engine cylinder (if you were to put your bike on a pendulum). Stay relaxed like Tyler says and let the giro effect bring you back. That’s where the term ‘rolling up the windows’ comes from, the person left the jump off balance
This all makes great sense…the only question I have is how do you get the bike to straighten up before landing or does that just happen naturally? Thanks!
Everyone says it does it by itself, but every video I watch shows the rider tilting the bike to get the gyros to straighten the bike out. Can someone please clarify
How does the bike come back straight? Does it automatically come back? I've seen people at the track whip and they give gas in the air to bring it back
It’s all in the gyro of the bike. Smaller whips don’t typically require a rev but once you thrown it bigger you need to spin the back tire faster to shoot it back straight if you know what one saying. But once you can start throwing them big you’d probably have better bike feel and know what to do
Like the guy said it's all fluid "if you car'nt do slight whip on a small jump 'then jumping is not for you ! If you don't listen what he is saying and understand it 'well everyone knows what happens if you stack bad ' hospital ' a mans gotta know his limitations 'to quote old mate Clint Eastwood haha
@@TheMxFactory Just checking in on this awesome channel! I love watching your videos often even if I dont have a dirt bike at the moment. I cant wait for the future of this channel! I have been watching since like around 30-40k subs
