I agree! I'm also an old school Briggs fan that started working on small engines a lot as a teenager back in the 1970's. I even spent my grass cutting money on the Foley Belsaw small engine repair correspondence course that used to be advertised in all of the Popular Mechanics magazines back then. I still have the certificates/diplomas framed and hanging on my garage wall. I made more than enough money to recoup the cost of it. It helped me to become a good auto mechanic and race engine builder too because of learning all of the basic principles for engine performance. I also used to soup up the Briggs 5 HP racing go kart engines for a neighbor. His son won a lot of trophies with them! That stuff was fun!

A “smooth as glass” jug isn’t all that desirable. I would hone that jug to get that “cross hatch pattern”, for better oil adhesion.
@joefudd
@joefudd 3 года назад
@@charleseck3941 the cross hatch is for breaking in the rings and helping them to take shape with the cylinder wall to seal. That motor is as broken in as it gets.
@charleseck3941
@charleseck3941 3 года назад
@@joefudd I disagree Joe. The cross hatch pattern allows for a very thin layer of oil to remain on the cylinder, for the next piston/ring pass. The micro grooves of the cross hatch hold oil in place, thereby allowing the oil to decrease friction, and therefore wear. A “glassy” cylinder wears faster than a properly honed cylinder because of the retained oil in the hone grooves, as well as the decreased surface area of contact between the rings and the cylinder wall.

Briggs & Stratton recommends turning the crankshaft backwards to arrive at the correct compression since the intake lobe has an extra duration of slight lift at the end of the intake event, beginning of the compression stroke. This bleeds off some compression to make it easier to crank at slow speeds. Cranking it backwards allows full compression to be accomplished.

Ah, the old Briggs "L" head. I'm not sure we gained a whole lot with overhead valves in this configuration. As a kid, an old man gave me a power propelled mower with a Briggs motor that would not run- circa 1978. I mowed a lot of yards in the neighborhood and was excited about being able to fix it. My Dad and I took the head off and he figured out that the exhaust valve was burned. We used one of my younger brothers darts from his dart gun and stuck it to the exhaust valve and "ground" the valve by "twirling" the valve via the dart with coarse and then fine clover coupound. The motor ran wonderfully and I had a power propelled motor for my lawn business. That time with my Dad is something that I will always treasure- and I learned a LOT about life and motors in the process.

@joefudd

I have too over decades especially testing them with just the pull/rope starter. He spun it over with a drill and the designed compression release from the cam grind (valve overlap) goes away at the higher RPM and builds more compression as the engine is running. If they didn't design in the compression release for ease of starting, the engine could kick back and yank the handle right out of your hand. The really old Tecumseh engines (before there was compression release designed in) used to often buck like a mule on hot restarts and break fingers or break the rubber pull handle or rope off in your hand.

Had a valve with no gap so i did a valve job and ground it down and lapped both of them. Steve, I love your videos. I find them really helpful for my piddling around with lawn mowers and generators. Keep the videos coming and thanks for all the expertise and detail you are sharing. I did however cringe a little when I saw you using the wire wheels with no eye protection. That may have been something I would have done as a younger man but now a days I am a lot more cautious and concerned about my safety. Take care

Actually he is pretty safe in this particular instance since he is using a very very low RPM drill in lieu of a high speed air or electric die grinder or angle grinder which can (and does) launch individual wire strands into low earth orbits or if you're unlucky, it will launch them with enough force to penetrate clothing and the first layer of the epidermis. The angle of the wheel is also something to be noted, since the danger area is where your sensitive body parts are in-line with the whirring end of the wire brush. Don't gaze into that abyss unless you are wearing eyepro. 😵

I think your compression is ok and for spark one thing is to Emery the magnet on the flywheel to get the rust off of it. Looking forward to the next episode!👍

Hi Steve, concerning the measured compression, I think it is enough for start and run, but not enough for sufficient power. Greetings from Czech rep. small engine repair!

I had the same thing happening with a tecumseh last month. It was under the deck unused for 10 years and I wanted to repurpose it for a 12v generator. Pulled the head sprayed with PBB and knocked the valve down with a mallet, repeated for three days until it was free. New carb, head gasket and changed the oil. Now it runs like a Hot Damn! My wife and kids shake their heads when I wear your Tee Shirt, but they just don't know. Thanks for the video!

Steve : I sold this exactl triller last year for $125.00 but it had been shop keep all its life and it ran great when I sold it . There bulletproof old Briggs engines . No more hours than they get used , it looked old but it got a good home to go too .

Sure that is plenty of compression ; ) One trick i use when i pull the head off a small engine is instead of having to buy a new head gasket just spray with copper coat . Of course if the gasket tears all up you can't use it but most times head gaskets come off intact. In a pinch i have even used spray aluminum paint . We even started using it on forklift engines where i usta work cuz sometimes or should i say most times we didn't have the luxury of waiting for a new head gasket to be delivered . Worked well especially when you use it on a new one ; ) Try it you like it ; )

Modelo Negro even better. Especially when sipped in an open air in San Miguel de Allende. But I digress... I'm not a pro, but it's been my experience (once, on a SAAB) that if the exhaust valve can't close all the way, you risk creating a blowtorch effect through the gap that can actually burn away part of the valve. In my case I believe it was due to already loose rings that allowed oil blow-by, that then caked on the edge of a valve. Most excellent series, Steve! Even if you've been around engines a while, you can't call yourself a good mechanic unless you watch someone else do it once in a while too.

90 psi is a relatively normal number for B&S. I read somewhere that, because these engines have compression relief, you have to crank the engine backwards to get a true reading. I never had a way to do this, and I've never tried it. I presume the compression numbers go considerably higher when the relief is inactive. I can actually hear this on the engines I install today, they chug lazily at first, then a loud snap, and the engine smooths out, quite interesting.

Definitely. I'm a stickler when it comes to (good) engine oil. I love to use 15W-40 diesel oil such as Mobil Delvac or Shell Rotella in all of my small air cooled engines anymore. These two brands are also certified to use in gasoline engines (especially Mobil Delvac) too. Not all diesel oils are. They start so much easier in cold weather than with straight 30 or 10W30 and run much quieter especially in hot weather. I always liked the straight 30 in the past, but these new diesel oils are so much better. I do not like to run any full synthetic oil in and engine that was not designed for it due to the internal part's clearances/tolerances of most small engines.

I've tested many a small engine in my days and anything 65 psi or above will start and run ok. But the higher the compression the more power and efficiently it will run. 100 is a very good reading for a Briggs or any small engine.
