Bro, you saved my day. I can always go through and re-link clips within each fusion composition to make it work, but that means every track of every fusion composition for dozens of clips. The "new timeline" solution fixed all of them. Thank you!!
Spent hours on this edit and for some reason got the Media Offline after getting the clip back. Relinking the clip to its folder fixed the issue for me. Thank you very much!
Thank you Chris, the second resolution fixed my issue. I just started using Resolve and I spent so much time on my first video and was very disappointed but thanks to you I'm back on editing the video.
Excellent - really helpful - thank you. I found it works better if instead, I copy the entire timeline to the clipboard (CTRL-A) and then paste it all into a new Timeline. Then no need to decompose in place. Totally solved my problem after deleting my cache - thank you!!
That's really cool. I think I did that but sometimes an effect or two of mine would not work, but that may have been due to one of the beta programs I was using
I can't thank you enough for this video. I was struggling with the media offline issue since morning. This video has fixed it in no time. Best Regards and wish you a Happy New Year.
I also managed to solve this issue simply by adding media missing clips again into the timeline again, which fixed the clips already in the timeline as well.
Thank you so much, I was racking my brains to while media offline kept flashing. ANYONE ON A MAC M1, turn off hard ware acceleration in preferences and rendering settings
That's how i felt when i was on a brand new super powerful gpu. apparently something hiccups and it just throws off everything until you reset that setting or force it another way
Bro you saved my dayyy. I was trying to edit one of the big projects of my life but media offline gave me hardtimes. But you made it so easily understandable . love you brooooooooo
Well, Method 1 worked for me. It only happens occasionally, by which time I have forgotten the recipe for dealing with it. I suspect the real answer for me is to use a simpler editing problem without the bugs!! You mentioned that you get the problem mainly with footage filmed on your phone - maybe editing that footage on the phone before importing it into Da Vinci might be a good work-around!
Funny you say that... I found a new app, motioncam, that puts raw video out of an Android phone. You convert to dng and it's so much better quality... Much larger, though, but somehow more stable than what the phone outputs normally.
Thank you, thank you thank you Chris!!!!! Number 3 solved a huge problem for me. My question is when do you go back into preferences and recheck the Decode option? After you finish editing the clip or right away when you do not get the media offline message?
I typically wait until I'm through with the project because I don't notice too much of a performance impact when this happens... But I have noticed that you can just toggle it on and off and have it work just fine after that. I guess that depends on your comfort level if it pops up again as an issue
Oh my goodness, you’re a lifesaver! I spent about 6 months on this video months ago and then had to put it down because I never had time to finish it. Now I came back to it and all my clips are showing as offline. I was about to lose my mind! I’ve spent all day trying to fix it and was about to give up, but your last method worked! Thank you so much!
I don't even have this option to remove decoder selection. None of the things worked for me, I don't know what else I could do. I record with OBS, in MP4 extension
I do. this is one of those problems that has hit most people from time to time from at least davinci 15. I think it's typically a codec decode problem or 'oops i forgot to plug in my drive' or "oops, i'm not on my network' depending on where you stored it. i have a previous video about it that helps most people but i found this third way the other day after having the issue pop up on my mac.
@@2424rocket Lol, i just mean the problem has been around for years. 18 has only gotten me once on the mac and it was most likely the M1's weirdness more than anything. I think i had more trouble with AMD vid cards as well. Either way, i hope this helps someone out there
Thank you for the video. All three methods did not help. On one timeline, everything is fine. There are no passes. When transferring a shot to another, one frame from the shot disappears. I decided to rename the file and made Conform from pool again. Problem resolved. However, I think this is not a very correct way.
That is actually what relinking tries to replicate. some say clearing caches works, some have to re-add the media manually. It's a really weird glitch and i'm just baffled by how random it shows up. I'm also baffled that this is a pro level piece of software with hiccups like this. I love it..99% of the time :)
you may want to try something like handbrake to convert it to a different format. i had a problem like that once. handbrake is fairly easy to use and you don't lose quality with the right settings. its' also free.
did everything in the video. Ultimately erased the entire cacheclip folder with all the generated media. over 2 tb 600k individual files ! working for the moment
for some reason the render completely broke on a random clip with nothing special. every 2 or 3 seconds it increases the time it predicts the render will be completed without getting anywhere. when I tried closing davinci it completely crashed. not even the not responding window came up. it just froze and didn't go away. i literally had to use task manager just to close it. davinci is a great software, don't get me wrong, but problems like this just makes me want to stop editing videos as a whole and just go back to lua programming.
For me, the problem was somehow wrong rendered source video from movavi converter. Converted it to mkv, then performed all these 3 actions including replace video file, and it's done
i needed some screenshots of youtube comments in 9 : 16 for a tiktok so i put them into google drive, after downloading them i’m getting this media offline and i’m so confused
Hey your video is what I’ve been looking for. I have the same problem. Is it because I film in h.264 codec? Should I convert my footage from mov to mp4? I don’t have a clue. I tried your method but nothing. Just media offline. Help!
I JUST downloaded Divinci resolve after using Premier pro I want to give DR a try but immediately I'm having this issue with Sony A7iv files.. None of this is working or anything else I'm finding is working..
@@Sully365 yeah & have the updated version . I'm getting media not found on every single media folder I have. I know the media is there because I've used them all in premier pro and they're my media files folder I dump into from my camera.
None of these fixes have worked, literally because at the end of every fix, the option wasn't there. Also, my media offline issues have been different than others. Everytime my media gets finished rendering, then it goes to media offline. I can see the media perfectly fine when it is rendering(the red bar at the top of the edit screen) but when its finished(when it becomes blue) it stops working. Do you have a fix for this?
This goes back to a previous video i had when people started commenting about weird offline problems. The only thing that came from a long line of discussions was that there was a shortage of hard drive space in the cache or main drive. Are you running low?
@@Sully365 Okay nevermind, I figured out the problem. Whenever I add text in fusion, the media offline "virus" spreads to that clip that the text got applied to
Is it possible to change the location of a sound and video clip to fix it? One of my USBs are busted, and I was wondering if I were to download the same audio and video clips onto another USB and changed the location, would that fix it without needing to reedit what I've already done?
Hello Chris, thank you for offering this video and this discussion. None of those options worked for me. I believe I've tried everything to no avail. Here's my story: I've done all of the XML exports from Premiere and imported them into Davinci. Somehow Davinci relinked the Sony a7s2 clips plus the Sony fx4 clips, but not the two Sony A7s3 camera clips. On both A73's the footage doesn't relink, but the audio clips do. The last thing I tried is I emailed the XML file to my camera guy who has the same footage on his drive and he was able to connect with no problem. What does that say? Anybody?
I do not have a clue without really just trying and failing miserably for a few hours. Typically exporting xml and importing just kidna 'works' once you get everything on the same drive, but i can't say for certain what issue you're running into
Thank you very much for this video, You'r the first person I have come across who has addressed the flashing clip with the media error. One final issue I can't seem to resolve is, when I click Option+F to find the file in the media pool (or right click and select the same), I don't actually see the files where they are stored in the media pool. I used to be able to see it once I click option+F but not anymore it doesn't show. Do you know how I can resolve this please?
did you try changing the decode from hardware to software. it is in the other video for fixing media offline. Other than that, it's such a tricky problem. is it cell phone video by any chance?
@@Sully365 It's not cellphone footage. How do I switch the decode? The option that involves disabling something to do with decoding acceleration was not there for me, if that's what you're referring to. If it's something else idk how to do that.
@@TomeZenith what type of footage is it and can you view it in a normal viewer/do you have the right codecs, and 2, do you have discrete gfx card? amd/nvidia?
Resolve is so powerful but it seems to be complicated for no reason. Music files not being added because of symbols in the title, no mkv files and so on. I am trying my best but its hard as hell. Few videos for Mac users as well😔
well, i have mac and windows versions. i will try to incorporate more mac tips into my videos. fortunately, i haven't seen too many differences other than the key commands. I will at least try to mention those. and yes, complicated for no reason. I can suggest you get OBS studio and learn to re-mux using that free software. It will convert files quickly to something davinci can read. it's faster than handbrake which will totally re-encode everything.
@@ReapingWhatYouSow Thanks! it gets to be addicting. 18 has 2 really cool features i will likely overuse: depth mapping and surface tracking. They are just soooo easy to use for what i've wanted to do for years. Goodluck!
@@ReapingWhatYouSow Shotcut is soooooooooooooo convoluted. you'll probably have a much easier time with DR when you figure out the starting quirks. It's weird bc i learned on premiere and moved to DR only to find that moving to premiere again is just painful. once you get used to nodes and the edit tab, you really don't wanna go back to a limited suite.
Hey there, I'm facing a huge issue. After exporting my project and moving some files around in my bins, all of a sudden all of the COMPOUND CLIPS I created show offline media. These files don't even show the option to relink and I wouldn't even know what or where to relink them to when using the option to relink on the bin they are in. Does anybody know what to do? Is there a harddrive location of those compound clips or would I have to reconnect them to the clips they came from? Thanks for your help :)
I really wish I knew what to tell you for compound clips. Can you find them in your media pool and right click on the unavailable compound clip and try to decompose in a new timeline? If they decompose correctly, you can then just create another compound clip and substitute that on your normal timeline Otherwise, I am not sure what to tell you. I rarely ever move things between bins because of random issues like this... I also don't think random issues like this should happen....
none of these tricks worked. 😭 I don't have the option of "Decode H264 H265...", but I matched what you had on the screen under Preference anyway... It didn't work. I use Davinci Resolve 16 and I've seen Media Offline before but mostly it's been working fine until yesterday. Now most of my files are "Media Offline" I was loving Davinci Resolve. I would hate to try other software.
so you can't relink or create a new timeline with teh selected clips, either? ugh. i'll see if i can find anythign specific to dr 16. 16 may not have the hardware decode option, but you could try turning off the 16's version of hardware decoding and see if that works. a lot of my mysterious problems are related to hardware or software encoders.
@@Sully365 Relinking nor creating a new timeline didn't work. I went to Decode Options under Preference like you mentioned for the 3rd tip, but all I see is "Use GPU for Blackmagic RAW decode" and "Use easyDCP decoder". I don't see "Decode H264 H265..." I unchecked all of them anyway, but it still didn't work. So sad. Thank you for the reply though.
@@OrganicFreedom do you have enough free hard drive space? that can cause issues. you could try deleting your render and fusion cache as well. Let me know if you find the answer, i'm curious
@@Sully365 My PC's C drive said 290GB free of 456GB. Is it considered enough space? I went to Playback, from the top of the window, then clicked on Delete Render Cache and selected "ALL". I still have Media Offline. I'm starting to give up using the files that are "Media Offline" Thank you for trying though. I appreciate it.
@@OrganicFreedom i will keep looking. did you do an edit right before the files showed media offline? can you create a completely new project using these files?
Hello so I’m having problems with my clips saying media offline, I download my clips from mega that I originally had on my phone, when I put the clips in a file and try putting it on daVinci it tells me to change project frame rate (I’ve tried both options to change or not change it but it still tells me media offline) apologies if my explanation is a bit confusing.
this issue happens only with my compound clips but normal edited clips are working fine IDK whatever went wrong with this fucking software this is nightmare, i made a mistake of using this software and i tried everything but with no success....
Thanks for the tips, but none of them worked for me! :( My problem is with jpeg files that I'm adding to (above) the timeline footage. Most of them worked, just like powerpoint slides, but now I'm getting the Media Offline message for some of the jpg files (not all). None of the fixes fix it. :( And now, any jpeg file that I add says Media Offline straight away! I think my Davinci Resolve is drunk! :/ Please help. (I liked the Covid hair, btw) Haha! :D
Does your drive have enough space? Have you tried disabling fusion cache and smart cache? And are these JPEGs on a memory card or on your hard drive? Those are about the top three reasons so I can think of
@@Sully365 - thanks for getting back to me. :) How do I know how much storage I have? I've deleted the caches you mentioned in the video. And I've disabled one cache, I didn't know about the smart cache. The files are on my laptop hard drive. In the same folder as always.
@@truenorthspiritmedicine in your file explorer (i'm assuming windows) right click on the drive and click properties and you should see 'free space' and used space. it's a long shot but i have seen it happen a few times when davinci runs out of space
@@Sully365 - I figured it out! It's all about the size of the image file. I resized the files, relinked them - and hey, presto! No more Media Offline message! Yaay! I thought I'd let you know in case someone else has this same problem. Thanks for your help. :)
Believe me when I say that DaVinci gives me 5% of the problems that Adobe premiere gave me... And about 2% of the problems that final cut gave me.... I've saved so much time with DaVinci because everything is together from sound to effects to color to basic editing instead of having this flip back and forth with Adobe products. Final cut was okay but crashed way too often and did not have the autosave feature... Although maybe it does now... I'm not sure My other argument against Adobe is the cost and now the subscription model which is absolutely absurd. I look at it like airlines.... You're going to get a hassle no matter which way you go... You just have to pick which hassle you're willing to deal with. If Adobe changes their subscription model, I could see an argument... It does boil down to what you need... For a long time, DaVinci was free and covered everything I wanted to do. I could still pretty much maintain this channel with DaVinci and never spend a dime. I've also learned to just avoid using cell phone variable bit rate video because that seems to cause the most problems. On the other hand... I probably experience this once every 10 projects if I'm unlucky. Adobe used to crash repeatedly or lock up or I couldn't get what I wanted or I had to change programs to after effects or to audition... Just annoying
@@Sully365 Thanks for the response! Noted! I am pretty new, and I am using DaVinci and Filmora. The media offline thing is annoying, but I hear you loud and clear! Thanks!
@@digidogmedia3253 i love filmora, too. it's more about what you need vs what is offered. I think 99% of people could get by with Windows movie editor or the apple equivalent, honestly, but when you get into more fun stuff...well, there ya go. Filmora has some really cool features and is extremely stable. Goodluck!
