We're doing a super quick and easy sewing project today -- upsizing a too-small thrifted skirt!
To do this, we are shortening the a-line skirt at the waist, therefore widening the waist, and adding an elastic waistband. This is a great project for a beginner sewist, and is a fast, easy, and cheap way to add new pieces to your wardrobe!

If I was asked to do this, I would have chopped off the bottom, and used that fabric to add inserts into the side seams. Your way is just so much better. I can't believe I never thought of doing that.

So, maybe it's because I just got back from renn fest yesterday, but I think a little belt pouch made from the remnants could be really cute, with little tassels on the bottom edge.

This actually helps me on a different issue - I want to modernize/shorten a Victorian walking skirt pattern that I have and I was daunted about keeping the hemline shape. Now I see that if I shorten it from the waistline, I don't have to touch the hemline shape (I'll just go down a couple of sizes to make up for the increased waist size)! Thank you!

I did that back when I was first getting into steampunk. At Goodwill I found a long black skirt, some kind of sateen, that was marked size 6 but when the hem was at the floor the waistband came up to my armpits. Removed the nasty nylon net built-in "petticoat", removed the zipper and cut it down at the waist, whomped in a wide black waistband elastic, and voila, a very versatile long black skirt that has served me very well over the years. Good for steampunk, Victorian, witch, or whatever!

I made a too small dress into a skirt like this! The bodice part was way too small to close up anymore, so I used the scrap for a new accessory. The only hard part was making a new waist band without defaulting to my favorite elastic lol

Lovely skirt that is as bubbly as your personality. Been watching your videos for a little over 9 months and caught up on most of your vids to as far back as I can find. I've been a seamstress professionally since 2001 and have been sewing since I was a child. I am semi-retired and just got into historical sewing and method in the last couple of years for my own pleasure. I love the beautiful things you create. Thanks for sharing more than just your skills, but you design ideas and your great finds. Keep up the good work and I am glad to be adding to your monthly support.

This is wonderful. So many thrift-upcycles involve buying a large garment and cutting it down. A comment on one such video was from a woman who is plus-sized and had to shop at thrift stores by necessity. She was frustrated by how quickly the nicer, large garments are scooped up by regular-sized sewers looking for creative projects. Your enlarging this skirt left a plus-size garment in the store for one of our sisters who can’t sew.

Personally I look for close color+fabric matching pieces at the thrift store that could be a back gore extension or a front&back gore or both sides gore extension plus use the same fabric for shorter gores at the bottom of the skirt for more flair, it could even get me some pockets as well and then it looks like it was a design choice... understandably some extra work involved. I take piecing is period to a whole new level 😉 hence my sewing room has piles of thrift refashion projects in need of attention.

OMG thank you!!! I've put on some Covid weight (haven't we all) and had some skirt that used to 'just fit' and now 'barely close' and they're pretty long. I'd always planned to hem them since I'm a short stack but the idea of moving the waistband DOWN?! You are BRILLIANT!!! This is so much less deconstruction than opening the sides of the skirt to add material in!! Time to crack open my closet and turn the excess material into headbands and scrunchies.

Awesome! I actually didn’t learn anything from this one, which is rather satisfying. I knew my method works, but it’s super cool to see that I’m not doing something a less efficient way that I could be. Personally I always check the skirt construction to ensure that I can make this alteration, and add pockets - but I bet that you did - and just decided the piece delighted you enough, and the price was low enough, it was worth it to you. Which I’ve also done. It wasn’t a good call - as it gets passed over anytime I want to wear it - on the basis of the lack of pockets. But, eventually I’ll get the exterior pockets belt thing figured out to my satisfaction and that will solve multiple garments.

@@LadyRebeccaFashions thank you for your reply! It’s tricky because…well the pleats go to the top, there is no waistband and the wool attaches to the lining at the top. It has a zipper on the side. Perhaps I need to ’dissect’ it - remove the stitching which holds the inside and outside together…hmm

@LadyRebeccaFashions
@LadyRebeccaFashions Год назад
You would probably have to unpick the pockets and reset them lower into the skirt.
@mvrooks
@mvrooks 2 года назад
one other question: how do you decide how much elastic to use for a waistband? i always seem to make it too long . . . .
@LadyRebeccaFashions
@LadyRebeccaFashions 2 года назад
It depends on how squishy you are, and how stretchy your elastic is. I find that with the stiffer "waistband elastic" (the wide black stuff they sell at Joann's), I only want it about 1" smaller than my waist measurement (plus seam allowance). This elastic is a little stretchier, and this particular skirt is quite heavy, so I would make the elastic a little shorter/tighter on my waist.
