There are areas right there in East Lake where there are still nice middle class and upscale homes. You filmed exactly what you wanted the public to see. Besides, much of East Lake is undergoing gentrification. Yes, the homicides are steadily increasing. But we can do without the speculation.

Lived there in the 70s and it was a very safe neighborhood. Little kids riding their bikes up and down the sidewalks. Hundreds of people at East Lake Park fishing, feeding the ducks, flying kites. All the churches were filled on Sundays. Great neighborhood to grow up in. Now it looks like a war zone.

I grew up in East Lake, at 85th and 4th Ave. NORTH, but socialized mostly in SOUTH East Lake. That was in the 50, back when you could go to Hill's Grocery STore without bothering to lock your door. Crime was never a problem except for the occasional stolen bicycle which could usually be found a block or so away. When I married in 1970, I bought a house at 8209 4th Ave. South. But in 1989, when a guy was shot in the neck in my neighbor's backyard, leaving him paralyzed for life, we began to get nervous, I bought a gun. When bullet holes were found in the walls of another neighbor's house, we moved to Center Point, where crime was purportedly much lower. East Lake changed from a great place to raise children to a violent "hood" virtually overnight.

The western area was hit by the closing of many iron and steel mills, the mines that supplied them and the desperation of those who couldn't afford to move to where the jobs were. You'll see thousand of what used to be decent middle-class homes made into rental property, now derelict or replaced by "Section 8" public housing. Drug addiction and the accompanying crime flourished, while the neighborhood spiraled.

B'ham was, indeed, a "wild west" kind of city in its early years, with many saloons, brothels and pool rooms. Drunkeness, fistfights and gunfights were common. The Churches that formed during that time fomented many reforms to tame things. But it seems that some areas are returning to that lifestyle.

Southerners are 99,9% friendliest folk on the planet especially in our Magic City and I haven't run across 2 racist in my life and I've been here my whole life, crime and murders are usually among those acquainted and all those nice vehicles using roadside parking were safe and sound in most of those neighborhoods. I grew up in Ensley and Woodlawn, I went to Baker School in Ensley, Gate City, Barret School, they where the best schools, the teachers took time to help. When we moved to Pinson Alabama, I went to Rudd JH , Pinson HS, no teachers took time to help u in these schools.

I've been out in that area many times. My best friend used to go to that American Legion on 1st Ave a lot until it closed (2:33). She's lived in Tarrant for years. And she's a single white lady. So while it's not the most primo area in the world, it's not too bad as long as you know the bits to stay away from.

I grew up in Inglenook and Tarrant. My dad and his siblings went to Inglenook School and Phillips High School. My Mom and her siblings attended Tarrant schools. At one time I had right at 12 households of kin in Tarrant. Zero, now. Nothing but hood and ghetto now.

We had rather see where our politicians live. These neighborhoods are mostly like every other place in our country. The houses look pretty nice in those areas you are showing. All have gone downhill but the economy is bad everywhere. So most people have to live within their budget. So quit knocking everything you see. Looks same All over this country. I have relatives in lots of states that I have visited. Seems worse since freeways were built.
