The hst at around 04:05 I think I saw at Newark Northgate working the York - London kings cross service

Are those crossing gates worked by the person who lives in that little cabin? They must've been up & down all day.

Yes, indeed they are. Sometimes the gates remained closed for five or six trains to pass. Even when they were opened, it typically wouldn't be for any longer than five minutes.

AndreiTupolev There is a crossing keeper manning the gates 24/7 under the instruction of the Signalman at Whittlesea. There's 4 people based there with 1 working 8hr shifts at a time.
