I was born and raised in ENY. There’s always been prostitution, drugs and high crime. But there were also hard working men and women there. Home owners, business owners and other blue collar people that took care of their families and stood clear of the nonsense. Gentrification has been creeping in the last few years and in another 5 years, the neighborhood won’t look the same.

Thank you for saying this. I too live in a community much like this and the majority of people work and have good family values. Those who have gotten caught up are always highlighted and makes us all as a collective in these communities look as though the entire neighborhood is wholly bad when in fact, it’s just a small group who make the trouble.

I wish this video showed more of the community and its people. I grew up in this area and attended Thomas Jefferson High School. I walk down those blocks my entire childhood in Brooklyn, and do not miss it because of the high crime and heavy traffic. I do go back every so often for the food and to see family. Brooklyn is not the same when I was growing up as a child due to so many people vacating the area and gentrification.

East NY reminds me some much of Baltimore; blue collar, rough and industrial, with similar named streets (Pennsylvania Ave., Saratoga, etc.). Had an ex from ENY who lived not too far from Bradford & Pitkin. Despite all the negative aspects of living in any urban city, there are "good, hardworking people" in that community. There is lot of history in that part of Brooklyn. Hopefully, gentrification won't destroy ENY's authenticity.

Pennsylvania Ave, worked at the post office near the el in 1979. Two years after the infamous blackout of 1977. It was rough. Mostly had routes down Broadway, north into Bushwick, south into north end of Bed-Stuy for a couple blocks. Under the el, would see ladies hanging out near the storefronts. Mostly people were kind to me. Never had any trouble thank God.

Back in the early 2000s my mom would drive from canarsie (no more than 7 to 10 minutes from where you're driving around) to the church we attended. We would be going for 11 am service and see these young ladies still on the clock. By that time there were usually just down to wearing heals and a purse. I guess the sun would catch them off guard.

Yeah, I thought I was tripping for a moment when I kept seeing school buses. The ignorant comments, however are not needed. We should never sit back a judge others choices without knowing the context. We should not judge period. I hope each one of those girls are safe in this very moment and knows they have an inherent worth and value, are loved, and deserving of kindness and respect as is every other human being. We all suffer to varying degrees. Mocking these women is cruel and inhumane.

My family grew up in this area back in the day when Belmont ave had the big fish market, my grandfather use to go get fish eggs, whitings and blue fish. Then go to Murrays for chicken, or the live chicken farm which i believe is still there. My family moved out of the area in the 1989, but I still paid visits to my friend in the projects. I also occasionally go to Mosque 7C on Pennsylvania ave.
