If I remember correctly this was meant to be a debut record for Michelle Gayle, aka Hattie Tavernier, but her record label wanted to (understandably) distance itself from EastEnders and rejected it. A demo version with an unknown singer was hurriedly released instead. Not that it troubled any kind of charts!

Lyrics: You're on my mind With you by my side My world is changing I was so blind You took my hand Now my heart is sailing Open land and say to you Eye to eye, my love is true Just try to understand I'll always believe in you Time after time You read my mind When I wasn't certain Cruel to the kind You helped me find Words never spoken I can give my heart to you No one else could ever do I hope you'll understand I'll always believe in you Always I will always, always believe in you Time after time I will always, always believe in you And when the night turns cold And the hands of time with you Memories are friends in need And morning sends my soul to you I will always believe in you Without hesitation The love you bring Fills up my life You're my inspiration Open land and say to you Eye to eye, my love is true I know you understand I'll always believe... Always... Mmm-mmm, always, always... I can give my heart to you No one else could ever do I hope you'll understand I'll always believe... Ohhhh! I will always, always believe in you Time after time I will always, always believe in you I'll always believe in you
What a shame they never used this version on Eastenders! I always preferred the jazzed up version but I think I was in the minority. This is a lot better than Anita Dobson's song. Thanks for posting!!!
That overused Fretless bass, probably a some FM synth such as DX7, sounds so 1983, even though the rest of the composition seems a little more 90s. I noticed in a lot of TV themes and music of 90-93 used that the Fretless synth bass exhaustively. I guess it takes the small screen production industry time some time to catch up to popular tastes of the musical one, coupled with the fact the viewership being on average older, it probably sounded modern to them. However, I do like the song it does have a kind of timeless quality that signifies both the 80s and 90s.

Born Feb 11th 1985, 1 week later EastEnders began, I am told I always turned my head when original theme came on. At age 7 or 8 I remember them changing the theme and thinking this will never work. Weren't it about 6 months they kept it before they changed it back. Even "Julia's Theme" was changed and it was awful. It can be awful as much as it wants today, far to dramatic and OTT.
There is a similarity in lyrical content too, it's not just two different songs using the same theme. Anita's version has her singing about the nature of love leaving them "side by side, satisfied, to stay right here in one Square forever" - hilarious considering the storylines she and Leslie played had them fighting like cat and dog, and this version has a woman telling her man that she'll always believe in him. Similarly, the lyrics to Eldorado portray a man who is pining for his lost love. Simon May is a romantic soul and instilled his themes with this sentiment, even though - in the case of EastEnders - the show was intent on portraying misery and disillusionment!
YOU HAVE TO do a doof doof credit somehow featuring the whole of this song, I dont know if you want to slow the credits down to scroll over the whole of this song, fuck, this is better than Anita Dobson, at least with this 1 you dont have her screeching voice. What an awesome find. Wasnt aware of this whatsoever. BBC Should release these with the likes of the Dobson version & the rest of the EastEnders cast that has had a song out like Sid Owen/Patsy Palmer/Michelle Gayle etc etc. Great job bro

This song makes no sense, it's just a list of different sayings to the EastEnders theme tune. The music video makes even less sense. Why would she always believe in him? It doesn't look like he is accused of cheating on her or he has been convicted of a crime he didn't do.
Nik Kershaws song THE RIDDLE didn’t make any sense either, but surely music doesn’t have to make sense - if it sounds good and sells records, that’s all that matters Wasn’t THE RIDDLE one of the highest charting tracks Nik did??
