Despite assurances from Ukraine’s foreign minister that a ceasefire would be remain in effect over the Easter holiday, shelling has continued in Donetsk. In fact, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine reported a sharp increase in the number of ceasefire violations, particularly near the Donetsk airport and the western village of Shyrokyne.
In the latest dispatch, VICE News correspondent Simon Ostrovsky travels to the sites of recent shelling during this so-called halt of military operations and to an unusual press conference for the pro-Russia Vostok Battalion who made it clear the ceasefire is anything but.

Jack Pred No, what bothers me much more is that there were hundreds of corpses of Ukrainian soldiers scattered all around Debaltsevo, eaten by dogs and birds and the Ukrainian government denied their existence. They also didn't hurry to secure the release of their POW who stayed in Donetsk for more than a month before the rebels just released them without any compensation. I wish any Western media would show the reality of this war and the callousness with which the Ukrainian government dispatches thousands of their young men to certain death. One would almost say they dispose of them intentionally.

Just like in these series I would like to warn you about the graphic scenes. Especially in the episode Odessa Massacre(episode 6) and Victory day in Mariupol (episode 7). To be frank, the Ukrainian government was pretty good at destabilising their own country by making a large part of the population feeling disenfranchised. And then attack them when they protested against the government. With tanks. In the parts where they didn't take up arms against the government they still got their piece of violence, beatings, torture, murders. Just because they arranged a referendum. You can read about it in OSCE reports.

@@larswhitt1549 Putin isn't the one who paid nationalist groups to overthrow the government in Kyiv on Euro-maidan. He also wasn't there pushing his views like US diplomats, John McCain and Victoria Nuland and even discussing who will be the next mayor of Kyiv in a phonecall with a colleague. This is an excellent series but without context you can't paint a clear picture from it all. Russia's invasion (as you call it) isn't anything more than providing assistance the republics fighting for their independence but we're all led to believe in the west that Ukraine are fighting for theirs.

STOP FUSSING ABOUT THE TIED HANDS! After death the corpse would stiffen and it would be difficult to move, so the corpse's hands and feet need to be tied for ease of field transportation and to make it easier to place it in a coffin. Plus you don't want dead limbs flying everywhere when you're carrying a body do you? This issue has been brought up in many other earlier dispatches and some people just doesn't get it. If so many people love war so much, I'd expect them to know at least some common practices on the actual f-cking battlefield.

+Marko i'm all for fair reporting and reasonable argument, but either side isn't free from anything, it's clear that both sides suffer from this. Each country has done tons of stupid things and will continue to do so. But, Russia has done a lot of aggressive moves before this and not to forget, some full-on oppressive and silencing behavior is bad enough. We can both say these "actions" are subjective to each person, but I think we all would agree that being scared of the govt's retaliation for being critically outspoken is pretty bad or lack of tolerance for certain things or people. Sure the territory in Ukraine was heavily contested before, but just how the situation unfolded and was done is no excuse.

The further from Russia you go though the less popular Russia becomes and that is where the issue lies. Western Ukraine wants to distance itself from Russia while the Eastern portion of it wants to maintain its Russian lineage. To be honest, I can only see one outcome that will settle this war, and that's a separated Ukraine. A western Ukraine under the influence of the West, and an Eastern Ukraine influenced by Russia.

***** When I referred to "both sides" I meant the western powers of NATO and the former members of the Warsaw pact (or the USSR) There is still plenty of distrust between these powers because of the cold war propaganda which still effects even the current generations of the world. The hatred between the former communists and the capitalists is still around ,but people are just too stubborn to admit that propaganda is still prominent in modern media. (sorry for being unclear)

Jack it used to really bother me to see reporters take pictures of dead bodies. I always felt like it was disrespectful of the deceased and just away of exploiting them for ratings. I saw this as a combatant war vet myself. I hated them for taking pictures of men I loved and knew personally. But now I realize they are doing it to show the level of horror that war is to the people at home who will never see just how terrible war is. Most people who live in a civil area will never even hear a shot fired in anger. All though pictures and video will never do the reality of it all justice. I do realize it is the only for a citizen to connect to what we experience on the battlefield. All though I hate it. It just like war is necessary. Other wise we would come try and explain what we saw and be dismissed as exaggerating.

I used to share the opinion of wesley clark that the spring offensive will start after the orthodox holiday (Just like the January-Febuary offensive after Orthodox Christmas and New Years). Stratfor predicted that there is a lower chance of an offensive this quarter. I don't see what the Russians gain attacking in the early spring it seems like time is on their side until after VE day. That being said, I the longer they wait the more likely it is that their goal is going to the dnieper and Kharkov. Then again, they may want to take advantage of the holiday to rally support against "Fascist Ukranians." Either way, it is only a question of time and weather until it starts up again.

Ostrovsky cynically blamed both sides for violations of the cease-fire, however, he showed only one side being shelled - the rebels, he did not show the ukrainian army being shelled though he would be happy because he is clear on pro-american positions; the truth that simply there were no such incidents

@@che.s2293 Yes, nothing. After watching the whole series along with other similar sources AND having relatives in the region, his sign of the cross means zilch. Episode 71 a Ukrainian soldier talks about stealing vehicles, how him and other torturing people ... often. My relatives speak of it. It happens to both men and women. This is in 2014. The separatists are fighting for their homes and neighborhoods. Ukrainians are fighting for a nation. One that has been mistreating people because of their ethnicity and native language. That's racism. Add other things their political leaders do to civilians, general harassment, blockade of living essentials, and the ripping away of pensions, that's cruel. Then how soldiers talk of torture ... that sign of the cross is just a thoughtless habit for the camera or others watching.

its very interesting how this journalist reports on how Donetsk was bombed by artillery and then goes about saying that BOTH sides are intensifying their military operations . This is absurd,what the DPR bombed their own capital ? I mean this is a clear indication of a biased attitude on the part of vice news. thats something that i can't comprehend , if ur a journalist then your job is to report on the truth,and if your not telling it then i would think its a horrible feeling. so i guess it just doesn't make sens,or does money and influence make that all right ?
