Easter Island is famous for its megalithic statues called moai and is the eastern most corner of Polynesia, serving as a stepping stone from Polynesia to South America. It has had a turbulent history which is expressed through protest movements today, and a fight for self determination. Join Marc Shields as he explains modern politics through the lens of the the turbulent history, politics and mindset of some of the local people.

This is super informative and interesting. I found the same thing in Uganda that the history and culture of a country has a big effect on how they have handled and viewed the last two years. Great video Marc

Awesome bro, I hope you and your tribe are doing well! Are you back to normal in Uganda yet?

@@RapaNuiLife We moved back to Australia in Jan. Our organisation is being run by my wifes brother and a group of Ugandans we trained up. We will certainly go back again next year to visit, but for now my son is starting school in Australia. Otherwise Uganda has fully opened up and for the most part covid has run through the community and mostly settled down for quite some time now

In my opinion, locals should strike a balance between self-determination and economic collapse. But I strongly side with locals who advocate self-determination because it is the most basic right to every culture to keep their identity. I salute to those Rapa Nuis who bravely stand their ground to resist 'colonial immigration' of non-Polynesians into the island. Rapa Nuis should establish more cooperation (cultural and economic) to other Austronesian peoples to reignite their ancestral connection with them. Rapa Nuis should look to the bigger nations in the West, North and South Pacific such as New Zealand, Taiwan, The Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia to establish cultural and economic ties.

It's sad to see that the Chilean government seems to mistreat every single native population in the country and not only the mapuche... let's hope that they give them the right to self-determination in the new constitution, since they're talking about a plurinational state, but I don't feel very positive about it.

Yes it is going to be interesting to see what happens re more independence. I am interested as Your name Looks Polynesian. Maitane would mean come (mai) and male (Tāne) in the Rapanui language... although I have never seen them put together. Your last name looks Latina... Its dificult to guess where you might be from? Blessings from Rapa Nui.

Oh, I am actually a 100% Chilean girl with no relation to Oceania whatsoever! (Even though I must admit I have no idea what my ethnicity is, so maybe if I got a DNA test I might be wrong? Idk). My name is actually Basque and means something like "dearly loved" (it's also a variant of Maite, which you might have heard). My surname is also Basque, and not super common but you can find it with some degree of frequency here. The meaning is not clear 🤷🏽‍♀️. It's the first time someone on the internet shows this much interest in my name, so I was a little shocked to read that 🤣 (but not in a bad way, dw). Greetings from Biobío Region and keep up the great work, I love your videos!

Must be hard having a tourism business and no tourists. But on the other hand who can blame the Rapa Nui people given their history. I gotta say I really enjoy your videos and wish you the best. Keep going!

Really interesting history. Great for sharing. And experting that the island will reopen soon - clearly with understandable restrictions - as I really would dream for a fifth visit... I really enjoyed your videos. Jean-Pierre - your friend from Belgium.

When was the last time the island did a birdman contest? I’d like to here a lot more on that subject. The birdman

@RapaNuiLife 2 года назад
The last one to be done was in 1867 if I remember correctly. But have a friend on the island who actually did it to see if he could. He would be a good one to interview

That's absolutely quite an information! Thanks Marc for sharing it to us. BTW, I watched that movie Rapa Nui simply because of those unique monoliths being used on movie posters as I was intrigued ever since I came to know about moais on Easter Island on a number of magazines and text books especially National Geographic.
