i got the great experience of holding one of these today. we have a couple of them at the nature center i work at. truly a beautiful animal and very fascinating to learn about. it is a shame that they are a species of concern in my home state of michigan. i hope we as humans can do what we can to help this species thrive again. i dont think this was mentioned in the video, and please correct me if i am wrong, but the box turtle is not a very good swimmer, so if you come across one please do not release them in deep water where they could drown
Devin Moyer my box turtles can swim and they love it also my eastern box turtle is different but it is a male it has sharp black claws and a brown shell he is a lovable turtle and we're buddies
When I lived in Virginia we had 11 acres and one year counted 40 different box turtles, we noticed that the ones that lived in the woods were very yellow and the ones that spent most of their time in the fields were more reddish. I have two rescued eastern box turtles and they love fruit, lettuces, super worms, earth worms, crickets.....I have a wildlife and conservation channel if you want to check it out. Great video I love box turtles
I just saw one as I was walking this morning took a picture of it. I have never seen anything like it and wanted to know what it was. I’m in Alabama btw
lol, you are thinking of hermit crabs. I know you are messing but that is actually a sound question. As you know, their shell is an extension of their skeletal structure and therefore grow as the turtle grows. In some species, you can actually count the growth rings in their carapace scutes and get a rough age estimate. Thanks for bringing that point up Joe.
Nice video...I've been looking for one of those for a while, but I've never found one. I live in New York and they're a species of special concern up here, thus they are a lot more difficult to find than in some other states.
Thanks for sharing a kid friendly video about this beautiful creature. My 10 year old son liked it so much, he asks me daily now "mom will you please let me have a pet turtle?" Since we stumbled onto by searching for an orange eyed turtle. Wishing you guys many more fun and relaxing nature adventures. Virtual hug from my son in Florida he made me say that 😉😍🤩😇🤑
I found one of these on the road while going to subway. I don’t know if it can climb but I’m pretty positive that it is a male because it has very bright-red eyes. I gave it some lettuce but it’s not eating it. Can it climb well? I’m keeping it in a short box so it doesn’t get run over, and it’s not climbing. I gave it a worm and he ate it right up! Truly a magnificent experience.
it’s mostly true that male eastern box turtles have reddish eyes and females have brown eyes, but have found some males with brown eyes and I found 1 female with bright red eyes! The most accurate way to sex a Eastern box turtle is to see if it has a dent on the bottom of the shell and check the tail size. Males have long tails and females have short stubby tails.
Hi Chris. I found what I am certain is an Eastern Box walking by my bldg. J was amazed because I've never seen one before. It's big. I do not live in a wooded area of near a pond/creek etc. I'm in an Senior apartment complex. Maybe someone had as a pet and let it go (cruel). I want to return it to its habitat, but don't know where that would be near me.. I've been trying to feed it flowers, vegetable greens, but I don't see it eating. I've read that they need to be with other box turtles so they can mate.. Can you help? I'm located in Monmouth County New Jersey.Thank you.Dotti
Hmm. Box turtles are often some distance from water (they are mostly terrestrial). You can try feeding it strawberries and greens but it will likely not eat. It was probably moving through to a patch of woods or actually lives there already, but just wasn't seen before. This time of year, they love slugs and may apple fruits. Is there a patch of woods near you?
Nature Now! - Chris Egnoto thanks sub to my channel you will get to see bo it's called Jaden Sunday go to my playlists and click on showcase to see him!!!
As soon as you said you looked up why it had slime coming from its mouth and that they love snails I was like ohh Yeah they do lol mine will pick them off the wall and sometimes get slugs
NY Herper Are you sure Bro? I see a lot of empty turtle shells in the woods. Now I am just trying to figure out how they are made before the turtle can get into the newer, bigger shells. I think it works a similar way as with hermit crabs and their shells. They just trade up.
You are seeing the remains of a dead turtle, probably, when you see empty turtle shells. I am absolutely positive that the shell is a permanent part of their bodies. Next time that you find a turtle, examine it, closely. You will find that the skin is firmly attached to the shell. If you find one, research its proper care and keep it for a little while, and you'll realize that there are little flakes that come off of the shell every one in a while. Those pieces are part of the shell, and they come off of the turtle, allowing the shell to grow. This process is known as shedding, or molting.
I don’t know how you can call yourself an animal guy when you don’t know what’s the difference between turtle and tortoise...what bothers me the most is that no one corrected you and think There’s nothing wrong with you calling the turtles Educated your self please
lol, I truly appreciate any corrections in my videos. HOWEVER, your delivery is inappropriate and further more, blatantly inaccurate. First you choose to correct me with such finesse that I am forced to respond to your false information. They are turtles. Part of the Emydidae family. Here are a few quick and simple references: 1 - “Emydidae, family of hard-shelled turtles native to both the Old and New Worlds, primarily in the Northern Hemisphere. The emydid turtles comprise more than 25 genera and 85 living species-roughly one-half of all the genera and one-third of all the species of turtles now living. With the exception of a few terrestrial forms, such as the box turtles (Terrapene) of North and Central America, emydid turtles are aquatic reptiles with streamlined shells. Some, such as the diamondback terrapin, are valued as food; others are kept as pets.” - Encyclopedia Britannica 2 - "the subfamily Emydinae which has mostly semi-terrestrial forms ( genera Actinemys, Clemmys, Emydoidea, Emys, Glyptemys, Terrapene)" - Seidel, M.E. & Ernst, C.H.: A Systematic Review of the Turtle Family Emydidae. 3 - "Although box turtles are superficially similar to tortoises in terrestrial habits and overall appearance, they are actually members of the American pond turtle family (Emydidae)." - Wiki. (Blasius Merrem. "Versuch eines Systems der Amphibien" (PDF) (in German). Johann Christian Krieger.) The third one should be easy for you to study, since you are such a scholar with words and tact. I happen to have done work with very reputable graduates in this specific field of study, and I am sure they would love to discuss this with you as they find my knowledge sufficient for field studies. Also, I occasionally communicate with some of the nations most qualified experts on these turtles and they would love to school you into a more humble standpoint with your opinions, but they would likely chose to just laugh you off instead of worrying about an overambitious internet troll. They actually spend thier time making a better planet for you and I to live on. Even I could school you into submission on this "correction" yet, I feel you can simply do the research yourself, based on the three simple examples (and their sources) provided above. If I were at home, I could refer to a couple dozen books on reptiles that would likely make your knowledge base a bit broader, but I don't think that would be necessary. Now, I would like to ask you to apologize for insulting the 10k+ viewers of this video about "not correcting me", since it is so easy to play tough guy when behind your computer and not in front someone's face, but of course I am certain that would be beyond your capacity. Sorry to ruin your cup of chocolate milk before bed. Next time; EDUCATE YOURSELF before you try and feel like a productive and manly member of the world by trolling someone you don't even know, from behind your safe zone of pretentiousness. Thanks for your help. :)
