This Eastern Gray Squirrel is "barking" an alert call after seeing us walk down the trail. This call is important to learn and remember, because it is a great indicator of things happening in the woods. If you're settled in a tree stand or ground blind and the squirrels bark, you may just see deer, turkey, coyote, fox, or the like pass into vision soon enough. This particular squirrel had earlier alerted and barked, setting the rest of the squirrels into a commotion as they all saw something. Sure enough, here came a group of Wild Turkey walking down the hill.
