In my Opinion, the L-1011 might be, if you all agree with me, the worlds most underrated passenger jet of all time.

I agree. It was more advanced than the DC-10 and was flown by some of the worlds top airlines.

I flew on the L-1011 a few times. I always thought it was a creaking, moaning aircraft, but in a quirky/lovable sort of way.

My favorite airliner. Always loved looking out the window at the Rolls Royce sticker on the engine.

+Daniel Ramos I liked it too but if that sticker had been GE, the L10 may have done a lot better and Lockheed might still be in the passenger airline business.

Nice video. This was most likely EA flt. 810 on its return journey to JFK. The outbound flt was EA 807 and used to depart JFK around 930am each morning. I worked at JFK then for EA. I loved the L-1011. It was a terrific aircraft.

Such an appropriate treat of nostalgia! As a kid in the ' 70s my dream of finally traveling on a wide- body -- was realized with an L1011 Eastern( San Juan-ATL?circa 1977-78 💨😊!!

The L-1011’s were the most beautiful of all the tri-jets. I only flew on it once in the early 80’s when I was 5. I remember the big “Whisperliner” painted on engine number 2 compartment. The plane must’ve just been put into service because she looked brand new. Even the chrome on the engines were sparkling in the sun.

I loved the L-1011. I was lucky enough to fly her on numerous occasions. Delta ( LAX-Honolulu), TWA (JFK-Berlin) and many other routes, British Airways (London- Copenhagen), Hawaiian Airlines (LAX- Honolulu) and PSA (LAX- San Francisco) which was dubbed "Mother Grinningbird".

Love the 1011, shame they didn't take the head of the table over the DC-10/MD-11, it was a much nicer jet and the safety record over the DC-10........ needs no explanation. Such a pretty bird!

+mytmousemalibu As far as I know, the L1011 was very underpowered and inefficient, and efficiency is one of the main factors in determining the successful of an airplane in an airline
@erik_griswold
@erik_griswold 8 лет назад
+Richard F. Stripe And the delays with getting the RR engines to work properly prevented many sales.
@mytmousemalibu
@mytmousemalibu 8 лет назад
The L-1011 had the RB211's which has become a wildly popular engine. By todays standards, sure, the original series of RB211's were underpowered and inefficient but so were most other engines back then. The original JT9D on the early 747's were the same. However, the engine was first introduced on the Tristar which wore the brunt of teething & developmental issues that most new engines have. And with RR lagging way behind on the engine program, that hurt the L-1011, the damage was done. So I know why it didn't fare well, it's just a shame that's the way it happened.

Flew on an L-1011 just once; TWA from St. Louis to Newark on May 1, 1989. I was coming East from California. TWA MD-80 from Ontario to St. Louis. Change of aircraft at Lambert Field. The Tristar started the day at LAX. It was after dark and raining on the East Coast when we landed, with a very low ceiling. A solid hour in the clouds before the lights of the street grid blazed through the gloom less than a minute before touchdown, approaching from the south. I had a window seat, as usual; in the rear cabin on the port side. The mysterious rumbling of the centerline engine in the aft cabin is part of the memoryof the flight; as is the dramatic angle of the wing flared for landing silhouetted against the lights of the terminal buildings.

In 1973 that would make it a very new airplane. Most carriers that bought them started receiving them in 1972. I've flown on TWAs Eastern's, and Delta's L-1011's. Morso on Delta's, because I work for a subsidiary of Delta and was always flying back when they were still flying. Eastern at least four times, TWA at least three times, and Delta too many to count. Always always enjoyed them, knowing they were one of the safest best aircraft flying. Also the design is fascinating to look at and those RB 11's whoa they really are beautiful sounding so much power and strength.

Two years too late to be part of this Video. as I started with Eastern as a Steward in 1975 but my first Schedule ( Line of flying), was JFK to Bermuda. I was only 21 but the Chief Steward (Senior Flight Attendant) on board. It was a turn-around 5 days on and only 2 days off, but at least I could somewhat schedule my life! LOL We served a full dinner with drinks in both First Class and Coach on such a short flight and believe it or not finished !Then came through the cabin after dinner with baskets full of butter mints! No offense to modern day Flight Attendants, but we worked our asses off!!

The L-1011 was definitely engineered and built better than the DC-10, though I like them both, and have flown on both as well. What hurt the Tristar program most was McDonnell Douglas' lead with -30 and -40 long range versions. Lockheed lost a lot of very critical market share as a result in the international arena from which it could never recover. My first flight on a wide body tri-jet was back in 1976. YVR--YYC--YUL on an AC L-1011-1. The plane was a hot rod on takeoff.

I remember flying a TriStar from LAX to Anchorage around 1977. I flew up to Alaska with my boss to work on a Salmon boat in the Berlin sea. He was a jet pilot himself and he told me how safe the TriStar was compared to the DC-10 and that it was a superior aircraft. Many decades later I realize why he said that to me. The DC-10 was a rush job and had some major issues with the aft cargo door resulting with some major air disasters. The L-1011 was a great aircraft from Day 1. I also remember the coach seating area being a bit more roomier for the passengers. It was a great aircraft for its time. Right up there with the 747 and 707.

MrHenstep1 Our trip started from San Diego then went to Seattle I believe. From there we went to Anchorage. I know we flew Wien airlines to Dillinham Alaska. That was the only time I landed on a dirt runway in a commercial jet. My boss flew a Jet star for a oil company based in San Diego at the time so he knew his jets. I may be off a few years off or it may have been from SD to Seattle that we flew the L10 11 but I do remember him raving about the jet while we boarded it. I definitely flew the tri star on some part of going up or down from SD to Dillingham. Maybe we stopped at LAX but we both lived in SD at the time. I went up there for three summers in the late seventies. and possible early 80's.. Its been too long for me to remember exactly. But I remember that moment clearly while seated on the L10 11 when my boss saying how superior it was to the DC 10. I flew those allot as well on American DC 10's. Just flew back from Fiji yesterday on a AB A330 and its a nice jet but very uncomfortable for passengers. I always pay an extra 100 bucks to get the bulkhead seat so I can stretch my legs.

Was a great aircraft.. Dc-10 was cheaper and did an ok enough job..the L-1011 was a lot safer and built better but cost more. Sad that my job between 1998-2001 was to basically kill them(the L-1011) . I was responsible for tearing down at least 15 ex Delta Airlines L-1011's they made their last flight to Victorville which is not far from Palmdale which is where they were manufactured .. we would remove the engines ,Avionics, flight controls and whatever else they wanted to that could be sold or used. was something working inside those planes all alone, thinking about all that its been through. walking up and down the cabin. was a weird feeling..knowing im alone but feels like im not.

So much history in those old birds. So many passengers, cities, year after year. I worked for a subsidiary of Delta for 10 years, between 1998 - 2008, and got to fly weekly. Delta was the first choice, and I got to fly on the L1011 regularly. A great plane and fun to fly on.

Best passenger plane ever. Safest too. It had accidents but afaik none were the planes fault. The dc10 however had the problem with the cargo door and other accidents really gave it a bad name. 1979 ohare and mt zerebus and Western airlines accident in mexico city was not aircrafts fault

TheWuschelMUC actually the Bermuda Triangle goes in a SW direction from the island. Flying to JFK which this plane was (according to other comments on this thread) would not have flown through the triangle. The plane would takeoff in a northwest direction to get to NYC.

Looks like a -500: Slightly shorter and no pax doors immediately aft of wing. Seems to me more -500s sold than regular Tristars.
@lorenj.238
@lorenj.238 7 лет назад
That wasn't a -500...it was a standard L-1011-1 The number on the nose (307) means it was Lockheed serial No# 1008 N307EA.
@lorenj.238
@lorenj.238 7 лет назад
Another thing...the aircraft doesn't have the "frisbee fairing" in front of and below the No# 2 engine intake like all -500's had.
@Zickcermacity
@Zickcermacity 7 лет назад
The picture quality of this video muddies those details. The standard(8-door) Tristar holds special meaning to me as it was the first time I ever flew: Eastern in April of '80 to Fla Disney World. Sat immediately behind the aft wing door, window seat, port side. The next row of seats was a full doors-breadth in front of me! :) So when I see a Tristar and it's a -500, it's kind of a letdown, LOL
