George Pitsounis I'm a Byzantine Roman descendant since my Italian Tuscan family lived in Constantinople in 550AD to 1453AD and lost 2 family members Mateo brothers while defending the city with their Emperor Constantine XI and send their last message to the family saying "We rather die with the Emperor as Romans than Turkish slaves and pray for us and to God. Farewell and May God be with you".

I agree with you about the look of the Rus, lots of them served as mercenaries and some of them formed part of the Varangian guard, it's normal that when they were back home they implemented a lot of things that they had learned from the Romans, like the adoption of their faith.

@ὁ Κατάφρακτος I can't understand fellow Greeks. Why is it shame to say they were Roman-Greeks? It was probably mixed Romans and Greeks, many Romans moved to the Eastern part during all those years and intermixed with the majority Greek population. Example saint Helena mother of Constantinous the Great. She was Greek.

Your historical observations regarding the formation of the modern greek state and its archaeolatry are very true so i will adress your questions directly. Whilst byzantine history is taught at schools ,it is a very brief mashup of it ,if you will. Justinian-Heracleus-Iconoclasm-1204 and then straight to 1453. Whilst there are brief mentions of the in between periods ,these are the only ones that are taught in greater detail . It is a very sad affair that so many great dynasties and events are looked over. When it comes to universities that associate with history/archaelogy and religion however the education on the byzantine empire offered seems sufficient so at least there is that. The education offered and the way it is offered in schools doesnt really make kids have an interest in history and even moreso at the most important and recent part of our history which is the byzantine empiree. The adult population seems to be more knowledgeable about it whilst a mediocre amount of youth(that shares more "nationalistic" views) at least feels proud about it. I myself inherited the passion for it from my father and the more i started reading about it ,the more i became fascinated by it as i gradually understood what a misunderstood and overlooked period of history it is. Granted in the past few decades it seems the empire is gradually getting the attention it deserves by western scholarship too. I totally also agree with you on the next point. Being greek i feel much more proud about Rhomania , a unified state and a great empire from whom we greeks have inherited our culture and religion. It is our immediate ancestor that we owe our existance and the things that define us to, not some classical city state or bronze age mycenae. As for democracy i believe it is a rather mature and extremely difficult to achieve concept and i support more practical forms of government but thats a discussion for a different day :). Im really glad to see that i managed to further your interest even by little :). There is one issue with the video as scrolling through the images id use in it i didnt notice i accidentally put a pic of sassanids in there so SOS for that. We are proud of our history all of it i am proud that my ancestors were The greek tribes athenians macedonians spartans and i am also proud that our nation established in roman empire and rule the eastern part of it for so many years you see every greek is very proud for his history many nation if you call them with their country name like you are albanian african etc they will feel offended and say that you are a racist only the greeks will not remember that

Sorry for the late reply .Indeed ,looking at it from a modern perspective it is easy to come to such a conclusion but we have to look at the matter from his perspective. It is easy to understand that it was always a dream of the romans to restore their old imperial provinces.Not even 100 years had gone by since the fall of Rome in 476. Now Justinian also run into some unfortunate circumstances that he could not predict. Conquests in the long term are a good thing and source of income but Justinian couldnt have predicted the so called "Justinian's plague" or extremely unfavourable for the crops weather which came as a result of a volcanic explosion and resulted in crop failures.These two major events exhausted and depleted the empire's resources and manpower much more than his wars did .Also no one could predict the unification and emergence of the Arabs or islam not even by the final and devastating Byzantine-Sassanid war which allowed for the Arabic Expansion. Alas no one can tell what the future brings but regardless of what happened next one must give credit where credit is due and must admire the exceptional work and conquests of Justinian and his most capable Generals Belisarius,Narses and Mundus.

Taking back north africa was a greate idea ( lots of grain, resources and control over the western mediteranian commerce) , the italian campain was a 20 years desaster the only way to describe it is the ROMAN VIETNAM, and the over extention in hispania was a mistake too. Justinian should of finish off the persians and then concentrate on the reconquest of the west, The Eastern Roman army with Belisarius at the help wood of wipe the floor with the franks and the visigoths , imagine today all of us will still be speaking latin and greek!.

So long as they are christian its fine by me.At the end of the day culture and religion are important than ethnicity.

How? They defeated the persians in their last war which war is the major reason for the initial arab success. They also fought off the arabs in 718 annihilating their army something that lead to the fall of the united arab caliphate. Ever since 718 and especially after Basil I took the throne they won the overwhelming majority of wars and were never again significantly threatened by the arabs till their 2 worlds lost contact.(Byzantine resurgence period)

George Pitsounis what? No they didn’t in 718 the Byzantine empire literally only held Anatolia and Greece. The Rashidun Caliphate invaded Syria, Iraq, Iran, Armenia, Israel, Egypt, and North Africa and they barely lost any battles to the Byzantines while taking these lands. And the reason the Ummayads fell wasn’t due to any Byzantine causes it was because the Abbasid Revolution occurred and many non-Arabs across the caliphate rose up and overthrew their Ummayad rulers. In 806 the Abbasids invaded Asia Minor and defeated the Byzantines so badly that Emperor Nikephoros began to pay annual tribute. Eventually the Abbasid Caliphate fell as well, but the Byzantines don’t get credit for this. Instead it was a combination of political infighting between religious sects of Islam, the Ummayads still holding power in Spain, North African Berbers and Seljuk Turks seeking independence, issues with Shia Muslims in Persia, and the egg that broke the camels back: a Mongol invasion in the 1240s.

George Pitsounis as for the Persian wars, I mean like ok sure they won the last war but looking at the entirety of the Byzantine-Sasanian Wars the Persians were kinda in a state of kicking ass most of the time. And while it’s true that the wars would result in Persia’s weakening which led to the losses sustained by the Arab invasions the Romans had a shitty time too with all the economic depressions and being unable to hold onto the Balkans or their Middle Eastern provinces. Matter of fact, their resurgence wouldn’t have been possible if not for the weakening of the Mongol Empire

@@peterfishman7862 You make your assumptions based on a map without taking into account the greater geopolitical context and or history for that matter. In 718 the empire held lands in the balkans, italy and anatolia(anatolia was its most important territory that was really developed and very rich). The arabs only saw success due to the last byzantine-sassanid war and the jewish revolt that aided the sassanids in their last endeavour. And lest we forget you ,said couldnt HOLD OFF. Well they DID. They crushed the arabs in 718 bringing an end to the united arab caliphate. From this point and on they would dominate over the arabs in the majority of wars until their two worlds lost contact. Last time i checked a dictionary for the word hold off that counts as one. As for the sassanid wars again you are factually wrong. The sassanids never made long term victories against the romans nor were "kicking ass" most of the time. The wars were a back and forth at best with the byzantines coming out on top in the majority of wars this being the Byzantine-Sasanian War of 572-591, the Byzantine-Sassanid War of 602-628, the Anastasian War and the War for the Caucasus. The rest were pretty much draws that maintained the status quo. And again by definition of the term "hold off" the byzantines more than managed to hold off the persians.

@@user-be4nm1fq5w With out Rome and without Romans, it's like removing England from the British Empire, it's no longer the British Empire, its whatever it evolves into. Its called the Byzantine Empire for a Reason and it was mostly Greek.

The reality is - During the Byzantine period, peoples of Greek ethnicity and identity were the majority occupying the urban centres of the Empire, facts. We can look to cities such as Alexandria, Antioch, Thessalonica and, of course, Constantinople as the largest concentrations of Greek population and identity, that's the truth. It was what was left of the mostly Greek Eastern side of the Empire. And no - The British Empire was nothing without London which was where the heart of power came from, its identity ect.
