An introduction to a new series where each player fills a specific role for their team. Essentially what you get is gameplay somewhere between traditional Massive Battles and Total War: Arena
I definitely like the idea. I was also thinking of a new way of playing. It'll probably work best with at least a 3 vs 3 battle and more. Each army has its ranking level. Like it would have in real times. 1. The General or King: He has the least amount of infantry/cavalry in his unit card deck. He has the best body guards for general. And the only one that can carry Royal or Elite infantry/cavalry in his deck). 2. Captains: They have the vast use of different units. From levy infantry to very sturdy higher tier infantry. Skirmishers, cavalry, mercenaries, artillery, etc. They can't recruit elite units. Rules: 1. General/King: - Maximum of 5 units only in unit card deck. - He makes most the decisions over the army. Giving commands towards his captains. - His general must stay alive/be protected. - He can scroll the battlefield during set up to look at the land before hand, but during battle, he CAN'T scroll around or scan over the entire battlefield. His camera has to be near his general. Even when on the move. So communication is a huge deal. - And general/king can't be in command of low/mid tier infantry, skirmishers, mercenaries, cavalry or artillery Based on faction in multiplayer). Only royal or elite infantry/cavalry. 2. Captains: - They can have the maximum of 20 units in card deck or more. Depending on the player's desires of army unit allowance. - They relay the statuses of battlefield towards the general and await commands from the general. - They are given a task/tasks by the general/king before the battle starts and must do whatever it takes to hold or gain a strategic advantage on the field. Until command has been changed by the general. - They can scan any where on the field. - They can command the most vast array of units, but CANT command elite and royal infantry/cavalry. - Can command artillery, skirmishers etc etc - They CAN'T choose the best general units for their body guards. - Units are chosen in the same fashion as was in this battle being played so there's a dependence on the captains co-op. It can be subjected to change and all, but I was trying to grasp the closest way in the chain of command in the battlefield. Let me know what you think. Peace in, Eric
Love this idea, definetly continue it. You could throw into the mix an auxilia commander for Empirial factions, one of the four commanders plays as a barbarian faciton, adds a new layer to the fight. Keep up the good work
Sub commanders is a really cool battle type and a breath of fresh air. Maybe you could keep it fresh by trying unconventional types of battles like sieges, river crossings and ambushes using the sub commanders rules.
Sub Commanders is a really great idea. It's awesome to see the amount of coordination that is needed to play in this team battle. You cannot survive on your own therefore it is important to be constantly in communication with your other commanders. Keep making more of the sub commander videos! It's an extremely promising series!
I absolutely love this type of battle it feels much more real to a historical standpoint. I would love to see more of it and some filming as its happening to get a feel for communication. Also if I'd make one suggestion on 4v4 with non barbarians (I liked the hun split up) I'd keep 1 cav commander 1 skirmisher commander 1 inf left flank and 1 inf right flank commanders. It seems more in line with historical realism. Keep up the good work and this series in particular you've got a lot of room to work with and keep them coming.
Very nice, I liked the first time you did this, and I enjoyed this second time. It makes the battle more... dynamic? It would be cool if we could listen to your comms, maybe in a separate video? Maybe unlisted or something.
That was great, I love this concept! Really enjoyed the one you did for Rome II as well. Small funds is definitely a winner, although medium might work as well. Would be cool to see maybe a coalition battle? For example like a Hunnic confederation with Hun cavalry and some Germanics as infantry, or a Roman foederati army. Anyway, it was awesome.
Oakley! Huge. Fan. Also I think it would be an awesome idea to do like a sort of large massive campaign where you follow an enormous army through its own war of your devising. You could put ambushes, sieges, crossings, etc. as u saw fit and make an awesome drawn out story out of it.
Great Idea, i like it. Please do more of this cinematic gameplay, its truly epic. Maybe for rome a good balance could be: 2 Meele Infantry Commanders ( spears included) 1 Skrimish Commander (Artillery included if needed) 1 Cavalry Commander ( Artillery included if needed) Anyway hope to see more sub commandersin the future! ;)
I love sub commanders!! I'd also love to see videos with the Teamspeak audio of both sides seperately so you get a feel of what's going on in terms of team coördination.
Fantastic! Blows vanilla battles out of the water. Please organize a tournament in this style I'll contribute to the prize pool just to see the VODs. Also, great map choice. It's balanced but not boring like the steppe maps every tournament uses.
Hey man, this sub commander thing is epic, I feel like this is the way the game should be played, really brings out teamwork and allows it to be how battles were back in the day!
Thumbs-up for sub commander battles! If its feasible to record stock audio from your teamspeak/vent/etc, you might want to record those too and add in a few "commander chat" clips when appropriate during game footage.
Maybe you should do what they kind of do on sub commanders and talk about your plan befor the battle and when the battle starts have it so only one person can tell everyone what to do when it starts. I feel like that would be alot of fun to watch and it could cause alot of confusion on that battle field :)
If possible, team up with other youtubers (or other players) and get a live commentary going. i think the conversations would be pretty entertaining - as well as being able to look at the battle from the perspective of your team mates. If this takes off, which i really hope it will, maybe a team-style tournament would be great to see. Fantastic channel overall! Thank you
I alwyas wanted someone willing to do this kind of battle. I think a few nice twists would be for one player to play with only the general and he has to command the army, lke he has to tell the "divisions" to go to specific places, kinda like real battles. And a live recording would be much niver since we would feel the tension between the generals.
I really like some of the maps on Attila, I really like the Rugion map especially (idk if any of you guys have played it, I know Oakley has though), as it just gives me an awesome Rohan feel. Unfortunately I haven't been able to play Attila for a few days because my computer died, but I can't wait to get back and find more awesome maps!
This is a great idea! I stresses overall strategy and team work over simply commanding several different armies. You really should separate this into just 3 different commands. Heavy melee infantry, support infantry as in skirmishers/pikes/spears and then cavalry melee or scout.
One change potentially is that because everyone gets equal funds you end up with balanced armies, which at first sounds good but it means that if only one guy can have calvary, and you wanted to have a cav heavy army, you couldn't do it, maybe instead of just swords or spears that commander could have the option of swords spears or cavalry
So is the game itself good? I know your not happy with the DLC that popped out so soon, but is it a good enough improvement from RTII or will i want to wait for a sale on steam? Love your videos, love your stratagem, keep up the grand work!
I know this is ancient but what I have been toying with this idea to recreate formations of famous battles good example the defeat of the Romans at cannae
I think what would be great is having one player as a commanding general. He should have a limit on the number of units he can bring to the field, maybe four or five, which he should use as an elite reserve. The other players must act on his instructions. This would allow for really fantastic coordination.
It would be cool if you could cut in some of the live commentary for crucial parts to the battle. I think this would benefit the video more than full live commentary as you wouldn't be able to provide some of the great little details you give on the reply.
Oh man imagine being able to play the battle of cannae like this. 4 roman players controling the legions and the cavalry vs a single carthaginian player controling everything as hannibal.
The thing that makes Sub Commanders cool, is it forces the players to behave like a traditional army. So, if you don't work together, you risk losing to an organized enemy.
i have a version like this except its more like wing commanders where there is one big army in the center with low tier troops. that army is supported by 2 armies with only 5 units that are all high tier
Yeah I've binge watched a bunch of that show in the past and remembered how frustrating it was to see the people try too coordinate. I think with these battles we at least have people who know what they are doing, its just a matter of coordination
hey Oakley i'm hesitating to buy the game ( because of the late dlc's yeah yeah) and i really want to play the vandals . Is this faction worth it ? are they good enough ? is their navy strong ? becouse of the gimmicky naval warfare / i'd really love you'd make a faction focuse on them or even just play them in campain ... truly Genseric the head collector
do you do sub commanders with everyone or specifik players? like can i play ? it seems like alot of fun but i dont know enoug people playing attilla :P especcially sub commander^^
awesome videos but plz get more views of the battle scenes I feel like you don't flat around and see the battle but awesome strategy and commentary just plz show more battle scenes
