Carol O'Conner in this film is absolutely hysterical! I have NEVER seen a film where a character who is on the screen for 3 or 4 minutes has such an impact on the movie!! Some of the funniest scenes in any war film that I've ever watched.
@@picklerix6162 Absolutely true. It's remarkable that a guy like Rickles didn't have a far more productive film career because he is surely one of the most funny people to have ever lived. I would much rather have watched Don Rickles in a film than say, Rodney Dangerfield.
He shouldn't have been waving that .45 around like that, firearm safety includes generals too. As an officer, he should have had a holster or a shoulder rig for that weapon. During WWII, Eisenhower for example, never carried a sidearm; he was never in a situation that would have warranted it and Ike always avoided pretentious behavior.
"Didja ever hear such fighting spirit in your life? They've even got the damn GRAVEDIGGERS in on it! What the hell am I doing here? BONSOR, GET ME MY UNIFORRRRRM!!!"
"Get the hell out of here, we got the game on" and yes "they even got the grave digger out there". Priceless material here, a real movie with real actors !!
I say Booker!!! Booker!!! The Old Man was just on the line! He tells me I've broken through along an entire front - why wasn't I told?!! I don't know Sir. You're the Communications Officer - aint ya?!!! You're supposed to able to communicate!!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
My Dad was in Patton's Third Army, 4th Armored Division during WWII and he used to watch this all of the time. Because he watched it, us kids watched it too. And when I became a parent, my daughter watched it also! I know most of the lines by heart and so does my daughter. One time I was watching this with my brother in law while the kids played on the front room floor. My nine year old daughter had her back to the TV screen when Oddball came on and was asking about getting the bridge. My daughter repeated every word Oddball said while playing with her doll. My brother in law looked at me like WTF? I just shrugged and said she really likes this movie! 😂
@Goth “Jedi Master Engineer” Bosch Ah, but no War III allied victory would have meant Nazi world-wide genocide and America under Nazi iron boot heel; and all of Asia under boot heel of Japanese who beieved at the time that they were the only humans in the world (see, e.g., Rape of Nanking for the consequences of this nonsense). Sometimes war is better than the consequences of not fighting. And appeasement is always a bad idea.
no rapid fire scene switching, no shaky cameraman, no fake excitement needed, the plot, the director, the actors made ya feel the energy without any of that crap, great movie.
And a young John Landis was working on this film. Watching some local Yugoslavian peasants performing rituals at a burial to prevent the deceased from rising from the grave. Apparently, Landis' local guide laughed at the yokels and told Landis to pay them no mind, they were just ignorant, superstitious peasants -- which got Landis to thinking "yeah, but what if they actually knew something we didn't?" What ultimately sprang from that was "An American Werewolf in London."
Carrol O'Connor is/was the master of the yelling role (the only other actor i ever saw who could do that is Samuel l Jackson), every character he had who had to yell was spot on gold.
Being a vet you would understand that medals don’t mean Jack. My father should’ve been awarded the Bronze Star in Vietnam, but instead the company/battalion clerk gave it to himself and the other guy who helped my dad recover their brother’s body. That clerk was the most decorated guy in the battalion despite never leaving the wire. However, my dad doesn’t care he got snubbed of a simple ribbon because he knows what he did and doesn’t need an “award” for it.
I feel the same way about getting the “Korea Service Ribbon” just for simply being stationed in South Korea. I did nothing but be a number and potential speed bump if the million man NorK army invaded. However, I was very proud to wear my units awards. With 2-9IN in Korea, our unit got to wear a special French Fourragere cord on our left shoulder for our unit’s involvement in WW1 and awarded by the French. At Fort Drum, my unit 2-14 Infantry, was part of the QRF for the Rangers at Mogadishu. They lost a 18-19 year old PFC that the unit does an annual run in his honor. Unfortunately, Michael Bay depicted the UN as being the QRF of the Rangers…..
Yeah because soldiers in combat never swear, they aren't horny and filthy and everybody just says please and thank you while blowing the shit out each other.
Donald Sutherland, Stuart Margolin (Angel from The Rockford Files), Harry Dean Stanton (so many good roles), Karl-Otto Alberty who played a lot of German soldier roles. And don't forget George Savalas (yes, Telly's brother) as Mulligan.
Carrol O'Connor's supporting performance was 12/10. I love the way his character hates his ass-kissing lackies, and knows what really wins wars -- and embarrasses them in the process... We need more Generals like this!
@@RomanvonUngernSternbergnrmfvus You missed the main point. If it wasn't during a war , they wouldn't be risking their lives just to steal the gold. But it was 10 times more difficult because they were under fire in the Germans territory while they were robbing the bank.
This was one of my all time favourite scenes. But from the start when Carroll O’Conner first gets out of bed. “You’re the communications officer. Your suppose to communicate”!
Kelly's Heroes us one of the best WWII movie of all time. It was one of my dad's favorite movies. The script is so original the cast everything was perfect.
People thought this movie was a joke when it came out, its now a classic. This movie was always under appreciated as a war film. This and the Big Red One, totally under appreciated. Amongst many others.
@@mogu73 Wouldn't call it an anti-war movie at all, even with quotation marks when barely any of them are talking about wanting to go home and they even profit from this warfare.
What I want to know is a) How in the world did he NOT win anything for this role??? This movie is a full grade lower (from an A to a B) without him!!! And that's saying a lot for a guy who's on screen for what? 3 or 4 minutes??? and b) How is he not better known for this role?? He is absolutely amazing and as you said, he is the absolute highlight every time he speaks. Just terrific.
After they found actors that could act they would have to make sure that they were all Jewish and find a token black person. Then they would need a woman because they can't discriminate against women, blacks or Jews. This movie doesn't have any of the 3 just a crazy Canadian.
"You're the guys supposed to be fighting this battle, and you don't even know where in the hell it is! Well, I'll tell where it is ... its 30 miles beyond where you thought it was ... Booker!" ... awesome film.
ShoreDude105 46 and I love it thanks to my mom.. and the best part is I took my 8 yr old on a gettysburg trip and watched KH in the motel-----> he loved it!! He lived big Joe's expressions... lmao
My favorite world war two movie, hands down, I have the DVD so I get to watch it when ever, all the heavy hitters of the day stared in it how can it not be great.
An absolute classic. Knocks the spots off any modern film made today and for a fraction of the budget. Check out that great bit of acting with his eyes when the grave diggers are mentioned 🤣😂😁👍
This will always be one of my favorite old War Movies...right up there with The Great Escape, The Dirty Dozen, Where Eagles Dare, Von Ryan's Express, Mr Roberts...
Hard to believe this movie was 52 years ago. Such a brilliant cast, only 5 of which are still with us. RIP Big Joe Crapgame Moriarty Cowboy Mulligan Jonesey Willard Bellamy Gutowski Petuko Maitland And of course... Maj. Gen. 'Get me my uniform' Colt.
Old joke -- old Polish couple awaken by tanks roaring down the street in the dark. Wife looks out the window and Husband demands "is it the Germans? The Russians?". Wife responds "no, it's the Americans". Husband says "okay, let's go back to sleep".
I like how when carroll o'connor is yelling at his staff near the end he's holding his pistol like he's about to use it. Just a little detail that cracks me up.
@@RSTI191 "You ever hear of such enthusiasm? They've even got the damn gravediggers in on it! What the hell am I doing here? Booker, GET ME MY UNIFORM!!!"
Great sound track, cool movie from the 1960s,better than any crap they make today ,real effects no crappie CGI like today’s movies, and real cool actors, millions times better than actors today 2019
I LOVE this movie. An all-time favorite. Best character is Oddball. A 60s era hippie 20 years ahead of his time. "Always with the negative waves Moriarity"
Without Clint, Lee Marvin, The Duke, Bronson, Mitchum, Vic Morrow, Richard Burton and some 2 dozen other great actors WWII would have been lost lost lost!!!
There was a novelization of the movie; the theme song, "Burning Bridges" was in the top-40 and Kelly had been an officer in Sicily, until his unit took over a monastery with a wine cellar. After they were sloshed, they got orders to take one of the 3 surrounding hills, but the message was garbled. So they had a good buzz, and they attacked and took the 3 hills, one of which was an American paratrooper unit. So Kelly wasn't an officer any more. Awesome film, and great to see all them stars in an ensemble cast film while they were in their prime.
I think I'd like to read that novel. :-) My mother loved the song when we saw it at the drive-in. She bought one of those K-Tel compilation LPs that were popular in those days because it had that song on it. Apart from a couple of old Patsy Cline records it was the only record she owned.
Rose McGuinn Not an engineer either but in WWII, they used British made Bailey bridge, prefabbed in 10 foot sections that were pinned together (big iron pins sledge hammered in place) and mounted on pontoons. They’d build it right alongside the damaged bridge rather than try to repair destroyed bridges. The bridge deck sections and pontoons were carried in truck convoys and as in the flick, these convoys often got delayed by any number of causes-bad roads, German attacks, refugees going the other way, etc. A Bridge Too Far shows in detail how WWII soldiers would do this, and it takes time Kelly’s Heroes don’t have.
Carroll O'Connor in his prime! Great cast, movie was shot in what used to be called "Yugoslavia" , 20+ years before the country went ape-shit-sideways. Don Rickles funny line near the end "Correct Kowalski, you win a cookie".
I liked Crapgame's (Don Rickles) line when they're trying to get by the German Panzer defending the bank. "Make him a deal." What kind of deal? "A DEAL deal. Maybe he's a Republican."
Paul Newman I agree. My friends and I are always talking about our favorite or best movies. I've seen KH at least 20 times and must watch it if it's on tv. That's my bar of a great movie when you never get tired of watching it. The chemistry of great characters and superb dialogue. This is a rare gem.
@@nickpav2000 Yes, so good and funny: But does it have better sound on TV than here; i often can't make out what they say. Don't know all words, either though...
@@Medietos yeah the movie has a lot of fast dialogue in it. I can make out what they are saying in this clip okay. I also have the dvd and when I watch movies I always have the closed captions turned on. Then again I've seen it so many times I can repeat it line for line almost.
The best part is the enlisted orderly who obviously doesn't give a shit and says, "hey, what do want me to do with this." no orderly would ever think about talking to general in that way. I found it hilarious.
I liked it when he bumped the food tray right into the generals arm, a subtle, "hey your food is getting cold". It was like a pizza had just been delivered during the Super Bowl.
I was a kid when this came out, as a father I sat my 10 year old daughter down to watch it who had great skepticism, she loves this movie even now at 25.
@@ToreDL87 No, they didn't. Democrats haven't changed a bit. Still the same racist, lying, leftist, sell out America to line their own pockets trash, they have always been.
This is one from the Joe Six-Pack Genre that everyone loves. To this day it's still on my Top Ten List. Love the scene where all of them are on the hill figuring out what to do with the tanks while Telly pours the coffee!
He made all of his characters bigger than life. Look at his face, he is very expressive, that’s what it was about him (among other things), not all actors can do so much with their faces…. IMHO
My late Pop took my younger brother and I to see this movie in the theater. Everything about this movie is awesome! Telly, Rickles, Eastwood, and O'Conner all in the same movie. So awesome still!
Part of the 3rd Army was detached to work with Montgomery and while on patrol they noticed that there was no one on the other side of the Rhine so doing what Patton would have expected they found a way across and then called back to tell Monty that they were already across. Monty of course was mad but Patton on hearing about it was ecstatic.
On the Wildwood , NJ boardwalk my brother and I had to spend a day with my father . It was hot in the summer so we went to see this movie (air conditioning was on inside witch was a big deal) when it came out. I'm sure my father just wanted to appease my mother. the day before was a day he went to the horse track with my mothers father .lol...anyway I still remember it. GREAT MEMORIES.... still love it to this day....blessed....Father still with us at 93
Ladies & Gentlemen, this is a fine example of comedic genius. I have laughed at this brilliant scene numerous times across the years and no doubt will continue to do so in the future. Forge on ahead!
I remember my parents taking me to the Bagdad Theater in Portland, Oregon when I was six. I remember loving it then, and still love watching it now. It’s one of those movies I always end up watching whenever I see it playing on tv. I remember it so well, it doesn’t matter what part is playing, I know the film by heart.
Towards the end of this clip makes me so proud of the USA . When the troops started rolling through these small town and the liberation had begun. Can you imagine the happiness in their hearts to see us. GOD Bless America 🇺🇸
I loved this movie. My dad took me to see it (which was very rare) He laughed his ass off and so did I. He was a Telly Savalas fan as well as Clint Eastwood and Don Rickles.
