Team window treatments -- even if privacy isn't a concern, at night bare windows become big black holes. It will feel cozier at night (especially in the fall and winter) if you're able to mitigate the black hole effect with curtains or blinds.
Oh man same. Nothing creepier than turning your windows into a mirror at night time. You can’t see out but people can still see in, could be someone standing right there and you can’t see them 😮
Team Curtain! Love a bit of fabric to soften and finish a window. Also, when it's cold, wet and dark, it's nice to draw the curtains and shut the outside world out.
You are a fan of softness (cozy, fluffy pillows and blankets), he is a fan of streamline. It's two clashing styles.. I say compromise. In the living areas (where there are throw pillows and blankets) add minimalist looking curtains (white, hung high, etc). In the dining area go no curtains/no blinds. There isn't as many "soft, cozy" feels that it wont come off as odd to not have them in this space. He wins dining, you win living area ;)
I saw your painting over the fireplace and laughed when I remembered what your family named it! It reminds me more of a firework - I’ve never seen any bodily hole that beautiful...
As much as I love green, I am SO GLAD you painted that fireplace room. It looks much less crusty and claustrophobic. Also, DEFINITELY window treatments. Hang the rod halfway between the window and ceiling, allow room to open curtains wider than the frame, and get floor-length or pooling curtains. Makes such a cozier room without enclosing it.
Team curtains. But the shear type since privacy isn’t an issue. It makes it feel more “homey” & warm. Love the transformation!!! Yes paint can do wonders for a space!!
I am a perfectionist and always planned and saved for the final purchases, half of which I never bought. So I am glad that you are teaching me how to buy things that aren't perfect but are good enough for now! Thank you for your videos and for helping me enjoy my home more!
Oh my goodness Cas I can’t believe how much of a difference you’ve made to those rooms already. It looks incredible❣️Honeycomb blinds can be a good solution 😊.
Definitely need blinds or block out/ thermal curtains in winter to keep in the heat & block out the cold at nights. And for keeping out the heat & midday sun in the peak of summer. I do also love sheer curtains to soften the room.
My family have always done both curtains and blinds. Blinds especially in bedrooms even if no neighbors, just in case/for the option/for lightblocking. You guys could even get automated shades that go up and down on a schedule so you never have to worry about them.
Soft float curtain’s definitely add beauty. I however have wood blinds on my windows after an addition was put on my house. They add privacy yet are a bit minimal. You’re doing a great job and you’ll make the best decision for your home. Congratulations!
I think you could actually have both blinds and curtains. Off white sheer curtains with a a flax linen look blind or bamboo or a jute look blinds (something on that soft theme) that wood tie together the off white walls and along with the warm elements (floor & carpet). There is a channel on here that is really good for overviews on different styles and she goes into window treatments. The channel is Suzie Anderson Home. I think the windows do look great as they are but if you feel the patio doors are a little bare then you could always hang a picture on each side to flank the doors. The house is lovely.😊
I'm Team Curtain...but only in bedrooms! This is about function for me, as I think curtains are needed more in these spaces to block out light so you can get a good night's sleep. I also find the feeling of privacy that curtains give in these rooms to be very relaxing. (Which also helps me to sleep well.) We have blinds or bare windows everywhere else in our house. Anyway, keep up the great work, your new home looks AMAZING so far!! 😍
We went with blinds on our windows. Both the traditional faux wood blinds and the honey comb blinds with battery packs that are Alexa enabled. Because we have a wall of windows along the back of the home. It would be ALOT off work getting them even. So we have it programmed to open at 7 am at 70%. (Here are the other settings - Open, 50% and 30%). We are keeping our sliders unencumbered so no draperies on either one. It’s been working for us the last 3 years. We love it. Our last home had a big slider too. When we 1st moved in there were heavy curtains. Over the years the style and weight changed. Then took down, what a relief! So nice! I think you both can get a win on this one.
I would go for the Roman blinds; Ikea’s are called ringblomma. They would be the perfect compromise! I love a minimal look but since you have a traditional house they would add softness. Congrats for the new house! 🎉
Curtains! Yes! Curtains give a room more of a finished, cozier feel. I have blinds and curtains, which is the best combination for me. I use curtains more for appearance than practicality.
Team Curtains, brings cosyness and warmth in the winter, helps with sound proofing a room, I ve also used blinds as well this helps to insulate more and that means reduced electric and heating bills!
No curtains, they get dingy I like blinds, not the slats, at Lowe’s or Home Depot they have really nice ones that used in my house that had windows all around a 20+20 room. I keep them up most of the time, but if you wanted you can do half way. They are the honeycomb kind. 😊 Good luck Cass. Love your new home and what you have done!!!!
I’m so team minimalist. I have several allergies and I work full time single mom with a college student and 3 teenagers. The less I have to keep dust free the better lol. My mom was a stuff everywhere type and when she would dust it was like walking into a wall of swollen eyes, sneezing and running nose lol😂 I have nothing on the walls nothing on the tables but lamps lol. My 2 youngest are like my mom and hate it 😂 I’m redoing the house after a divorce earlier this yr and I promised I would put things on the walls and decor on end tables. I’m am team throw blanket and a few pillows it’s does make it feel cozy
Team Curtains! Designer Alexandra Gater says on (almost) every YT episode that every window needs some softening curtains even if they don’t serve a function!
Torn…. I love curtains living room def yes…. Dining room clear because it is smaller…. If you wanted to soften the look… cling window vinyl… some areas are clear and some areas are clouded…. It would still give you the view with some coverage 😊
window compromise: sheers that match the wall color, sofa room only to start. get a rod long enough that you can push the sheers to hang beside the window, not blocking any of the view or light and slide them completely closed if you ever want to. when they are open, the rod and the stacked open sheers will frame the window and offer some sound mitigation when there are 5 people on that sofa.
Love this type of video, updates on a nothing to low budget. I have a lot that needs to be done around my home, but not the funds. I love curtains, even if you don’t close them, but they are welcoming when coming into the colder weather. Xxx
Team Cass! Love what you are doing. How about blinds that you can open at the top, but leave closed at the bottom? We do that because we don’t need to worry about anyone looking in, but I needed to feel less exposed.
I love curtains I had boxes of curtains. I could change them probably once a week (I didn’t though.) where I live now the windows are curtains. I chose this because I found that the curtains were just dust collectors. It was one more thing to clean. I love curtains. I ended up donating two totes of curtains to my sister, who still has curtains everywhere.
Toppers and blinds. I really like the linen blinds that you can push up and they almost disappear. there are also some I like that pull up halfway from the bottom. What about shutters? Just a few ideas, but I definitely like something on my windows, no naked windows!
I'm really liking them as is. You have a lot of things in the rooms now and I think it would be too busy. I like the calmness of the windows in comparison. Your new home looks so beautiful. I love the changes you've made and the lovely furniture pieces you've added. Thanks for sharing this video with us.
Definitely curtains. Softens the edges, frames the view, helps to stop the outside darkness from drawing all the colour and warmth to the outside - even when they are never closed
Love the new house, we have blinds for west sun and privacy, curtain panels in dining room only. I love to see out, so many options now. Try living with it a while and you will make the right decision. Keep up your good work.
The table and chair redo of the breakfast nook came out great. I am against bare windows, although it is the new “style”. How about a Roman shade on the windows as a compromise?? For me, soft very sheer curtains IS the compromise! Hey, it’s not draperies….although, once winter hits, the ability to add extra insulation with lined draperies if needed, may come in handy and the rods will already be there!
I agree curtains soften the windows. I have lace valences on my windows, and it just softens the windows. I to live in a wooded area and don’t want to block the view of my beautiful trees….
I'm team bare windows except in the bedrooms. But I do like the look of window treatments also. Our living room has windows on the front of the house and the back. In the back is a forest so I don't have anything covering them. It is a nod toward the more minimal look, but in the front is a neighborhood street so we have nice clean white curtains and I love that look too. They are open all day and closed at night. Maybe there is a compromise in there somewhere???
First of all i absolutely love your polka dot shirt!❤❤❤❤❤ And i am a throw pillow addict myself! Yay! You're house is looking beautiful! You definitely have great taste!
Build a tasteful berm in the back yard about 4 feet from your house. This will give you a safety zone to keep the water from your house. Is the water overflowing from the creek? Maybe you can build up the creekside so it won't flood your backyard.
I definitely think you should do the white sheer curtains, we have them and they look great. Also I love these kinds of decorating videos. Your home looks great!
Rods just above the windows. Curtains to the bottom of the windows.Definitely to the sides of the windows, not covering them. Yes, they are good for insulating on a cold night or a hot day, but otherwise just for framing.
Team curtains for softness, but yes I’d stick to plain white, no patterns, unless it’s just textured white on white. The place looks beautiful painted white too!
Compromise!! I hang soft white curtains in the fall and winter to cozy up our home and remove, wash and store them in the Spring and Summer. I give my windows a good washing inside and out (not just the spray and wipe) at the same time I hang or remove my curtains and it feels fresh and clean in that space again. Just when the Spring bulbs start to emerge, I am ready to open up to the light and view again. Even with the curtains completely open your eye stops inside. With them removed my eye is drawn to Spring bursting outside. When it starts getting dark earlier I hang the curtains, get out the fall decor and blankets and cozy up for winter.
I know you didn't specifically show/call out painting the brass trim on your fireplace, but YES! A little can of high temp black paint is cheap and it has lasted really well for me for several years, but painting just those little brass strips really modernizes a fireplace!
Congrats on the new house! I’m team both curtains and blinds! Blinds for functionality but curtains for just pretty decor 😅 Also a huge fan of Amazon light fixtures for simple upgrades - ours have lasted years at this point!
Bare windows! We love in the country, no peeping Tom's, and across 35 windows, we have 1 curtain and 3 sets of blinds. We've only provided options to cover the windows in our bedrooms. And that only for nights like tonight with a big, bright moon. I love not having anything in the way of my view to the outside.
