This is a cheap and simple way to compress a brake caliper piston without the need for any special tools. All you need is a couple of small pieces of wood and a couple of screwdrivers. This method works with most front brake calipers as the pistons push straight back into the caliper. It will not work with most rear brake caliper pistons as they have to be rotated as they are being pushed in due to the integrated handbrake mechanism. NOTE: While not absolutely necessary, it is recommended that you open the caliper bleed screw and drain the old fluid as you push the piston back into the caliper. This will prevent the old fluid from being pushed back through the brake lines and also prevent the fluid reservoir from overflowing. If you do open the bleed screw, make sure you don't let any air get into the system. This video shows how to compress a rear brake caliper both with, and without special tools: • Rear Brake Caliper Pis...

Before you even take off the caliper use a big screwdriver and pry between the rotor and the pad forcing the piston back in. Gets most of it done if not all. EZ!

Using the old brake pads is very clever. The applied force is evenly distributed and any damage that could occur would only be to the old brake pads that you're going to throw out any way. Thanks so much.

Lifesaver. I've done plenty of brake jobs and never had a problem compressing the caliper with a C clamp but today it would not budge. I was ready to give up and buy a new caliper thinking it was bad but then I came across the trick with the screwdrivers and it worked like a charm. I don't think I will ever use a C clamp again. Why didn’t I think of this! However, in my opinion, the bleed nipple should be opened to release the fluid displaced by the calliper piston as it’s pushed back. The reason? The fluid in the calliper is old and has been subject to a lot of heat so should be discarded. Also, as the fluid is pushed back into the master cylinder, it can occasionally push back the floating piston where it can stick because it travels into the unused part of the cylinder.

Nice tips, I prefer to open up the bleed nipples and let the old manky fluid drain out from behind the pistons - it prevents backwash of grime into the brake lines and ABS unit and allows clean fluid to fill up behind the calipers without mixing old and new when you then bleed...

You just showed how to force the most contaminated brake fluid back into the system. That pressure and bad fluid can harm the master cylinder or the ABS system. Do your brakes a favor and open the bleeder, or better yet bleed that whole line. Don't be afraid of that bleeder screw, just apply some heat first and it will come right out.

That is a great technique I've never seen before. What I like in this approach that you can compress the piston without removing pads. On one of our cars (2003 Chevy Cavalier) the outer pad is locked w/special clamps, you need to have 2 screwdriver to put it back. And sometimes you just need to remove the caliper fm/the disc for other jobs. It is usually hard for me to put the caliper back on the disc, though I open the brake fluid cap. Thank you for this so clever tip.

To avoid damaging the abs unit or the master cylinder the hose should be clamped off and the fluid expelled thru the bleed nipple.
@oneninerniner3427
@oneninerniner3427 Год назад
Well, I prefer to not clamp the brake line, that can damage the internal structure of the hose I believe. But I always crack the bleeder valve and preferably position the caliper so it's up. But yeah you don't want to push the fluid backwards through the ABS system in most cases. Doing so can push any accumulated debris from in the caliper into the ABS and mess it up, I've seen it happen.

If the piston is so hard to push in with the bleeding niple open it should be taken out and cleaned and properly lubricated before pushed in by hand. I prefer to use some more slippery oil then brake fluid for this. Before the rubber seal goes in to its groove on the piston, I always fill the groove with sticky marine grease to keep moisture out and rust away from the piston for as long as possible. Rust is what kills both clippers and bearings!!!

The caliper compressor tool is made to make sure that the caliper piston is pushed evenly at the center to avoid damaging the piston /seal. The tool is not that expensive so if you work on your car it's worth the money, some times trying to open the bleeder fitting creates more issues like bleeder fitting snaps off in the caliper now you have to replace the caliper and deal with rusted brake line and bleed the system.

Old Automotive tutor here. Bad workmanship shown. Never Never Never push the dirty rusty old fluid back up through the ABS and into the master Cyl. Clamp the hose shut with an appropriate clamp tool, open the brake bleeder, dump the old fluid. You do not need water, or rust, or contamination through the brake system. Nice new fluid has the highest boiling point. Do them one at a time, bleeding is not normally required, and test the result each time.
