Thank you so much, and I'm delighted you found it useful 💚 Brilliant that you're considering to build one too 🥰 ....if you are also using a pond liner as the waterproof membrane under it all, I would tuck it all away, so no part of it can consistently move..I.e.on this current one,we left the ends of the pont liner to hang down over the roofs edge, but the UV and wind combo have made it brittle and has cracked, exposing the roof structure.but that is only because if was allowed to be flapping about.hope it helps 😊 Best wishes, Maiju 💚🌿

The green roofs do not need to be complicated at all and if you are not living in an area where you would get long spells of extremes of freezing or hot temperatures, then happy days!
Great video. I was trying to figure out your accent for a while. I initially thought Irish but there's a Norwegian twang in there. Sounds beautiful. Inspiring video, helpful in the planning of my green roof, only issue is my roof is asbestos.

Thank you so much for your kind words 😊 the twang comes from my Estonian roots but I've settled in Ireland, been living here nearly 20 years 🇮🇪🍀❤️ it's great you are considering a green roof, it is an amazing growing space to observe and enjoy 💚 Asbestos is dangerous material - wouldn't be something I'd walk on as the toxins are released when the product breaks and once you've covered the roof with liners and soil.. There's no way of knowing exactly where the joints were... 🤔 it's a tricky one indeed.... I'll be making another green roof during the summer for our new chicken run- looking forward to that! 😀😀😉 Best wishes 💚🌿
Very inspiring & also relaxing to watch. Thank you. I have a 64 square meter flat roof which I'm going to green. It's underneath a huge ash tree - so two thirds has a lot of shade. Also a lot of leaf fall. I had thought of just leaving the leaf mulch & organic self seeded plants grow, but the straggly outcome gives the impression of neglect, & I want it to look smart as I'm applying for planning permission. It is overlooked by many windows in a street where the residents are sometimes inclined to be a touch snobby, & ready to object about this & that to the council. I'm looking for suggestions as to plants that might do well - in the shade, & with a similar 2 inch soil build up to your roof. Thank you in advance for any comments / suggestions from anyone; & thanks again Spuds & Roses for all your wonderful work!
First of all, thank you 🤗....for your kind comment and taking the time to ask a question, as we are so often in similar circumstances, but not brave enough to voice our concerns. I am so guilty of that personally ...Its a tricky situation as naturally the roof covering plants would need full sun, or at least very little shade....from one side I can give you advice on the ash trees, as I have a row of fully mature more than 20m height very near at the boundary line (so I have no option about trimming the branches or cutting down the trees) and they create a lot of shade plus their seeds land everywhere, abundantly......even on our green roof....so they are going to be a big issue as they root really easily and is going to create a lot of weeding...what climate are you in? .
Hi! Thank you 😊 It provides as much as any wooden structure roof would, nothing extra as the build/soil depth is shallow. It is definitely cooler if you compare it to metal roof 👍
well done ! could it be that in the winter the roots are not so much protected temperature wise? its on a roof and not in the full ground, could it be that this makes it harder for the plants to survive?
Thank you very much 😀 and @100Noddy got to reply to your question quicker 😊 The coldest temperatures the roof has experienced is about minus 10 Celsius and even that no longer then a few days in a row and the plants I did originally loose, had a warning about being frost hardy but not fully hardy... Our climate here is mild enough, but the biggest losses have been to the larger plants and by the damage of the wine weevil or hot summer spells to non-alpines. The sedums are the best for all situations 😊💚🌿
Thank you 😊 I have considered adding horticultural type of grit to the top surface as a top dressing but haven't gone through with that trouble yet. I will try to start propagating some of them as I would need to build another green roof once the chicken coop build will go ahead. Thank you again 💚🌿🐞🐝🦋
@@spudsandroses my pleasure > I was a professional gardener and we made green roofs at our company > in New York City there are a lot of green roofs and I saw the different methods > it’s great that your roof planter is very shallow people make big problems when they have deep planters > as I said they hold too much water and they deteriorate easily > we used rock of different sizes > people generally think rock is heavier than soil and don’t think about that water is super heavy
You're a Star! Thank you so much for your comment! We do get a lot of rain and the drainage is important. For the future design I was planning to use small rocks around the perimeter of the roof and around the central battens too as the soil will eventually move around and get itself between all stone anyway but the concentrated amount of stone would keep the drainage flowing and structure last longer.... or at least that's my theory :) xx

Hi, as the soil depth is shallow and not water retaining you would get most of the rainfall coming down the gutters. We have an IBC tank connected to one of the side's downpipe and it fills in no time as we get a lot of rain. Hope this helps! Best Wishes 🌿💚
Hi, and thank you for your query 😊💚 The framing is sitting loose on the pond liner, actually. It is not fixed onto it. Due to the shallow angle of the roof, the framing does not move or slide off it. The weed membrane is stapled onto the frame, and as the weed membrane is covered with soil, the weight of this combination is keeping everything static. Have a look at this video, too. How is it that the rainwater doesn’t pool above the 2x4 edging? Ivd seen people use the special metal drainage edging so that the water can drain but you have used solid batons and it doesn’t seem to be a problem. Is that right? Thanks!
Hi, and thank you for your query 😀 The water does not collect behind the timber, and the drainage is no problem. It is because the ween barrier membrane material is very porous and allows the water drain through between the timber battens and the pond liner. The weight of the soil mix on the weed membrane has naturally pushed the timber a couple of millimetres off the pond liner, and the water drains easily. I was more worried that the timer would not last more than 3-4 years as it is not treated, and it's just softwood, but it has not been a problem at all 😊 Also, the timber battens are very skinny -1inchx 2inch (25mm x 50mm) Hopefully, it helps 💚🌿
Thank you very much 😊 I'm delighted you liked it. My roof is a mix of Sedums and Alpines. The best performers have been-Sedum Coral Reef, Sedum Dragons Blood, Sedum sieboldii Mediovariegatum,( Sedum Lemon Ball was amazing but hasn't survived) Sedum Spathulifolium, Phlox Nettleton Variation, Dianthus Dainty Dame and a lot of Saxifraga varieties. I am going to test and try new varieties all the time. I'm heartbroken that I will have to get rid of Saxifragas as Vine Weevil is consistently demolishing it, and I want to keep the weevil population as small as possible but they seem to love that plant. @@spudsandroses thank you so much 💕 ooo yes I have the pesky vine weevil in my pots too, so I'll give that one a miss. I'm going to try nematodes this year to see if it helps.
@@annashiegl I have tried nematodes on ground level before and I think they work. I haven't tried on the roof as the rules about them not trying out is quite strict and I couldn't guarantee I would remember to check the soil moisture daily after applying the nematodes. So far I have resolved to hand picking them off. You can see very easily which saxifrage have been affected as instead of they lush green colour the foliage is turning brown. 💚🌿
I am concerned that you use compost? Why? If I use compost then my neighbour’s gigantic by-fence sycamore, overhanging my garden shed, will produce many sycamore saplings that will puncture the membrane, right? Is it possible for you not to use any compost at all to grow sedum? Let me know. Thanks!
Hi! Brilliant question and something I have asked myself before 😀. First of all- the way my planting grid is laid down is quite sparse and I'm not using any specialist growing matting or water run-off system grid. As it is a mix of sedums and groundcover alpine plants that I'm growing, the compost, gravel/vermiculite mix works perfectly, as it is not too fine to be washed away through the groundcover material I'm using as the layer above the pond liner. You will need some amount of soil mix still, where the plants can get nutrients from. If you can source expandable clay or perlite in large quantities and mix it through compost then happy days. As far as weed seeds or sycamore goes-they would pop up anywhere so you would need to be able to weed the roof. And if the sycamore is going to be a big issue, perhaps reconsider having a green roof under it. Hope it helped 🌿💚😊
