Green roofs are increasing in popularity to the number of benefits they bring, especially in city areas. With the increase in extreme weather patterns, green roofs offer an environmentally friendly way of protecting buildings. They can help offer a home for wildlife to city living and reduce the amount of dull grey concrete when you look out your window. This guide shows you how you can green up your shed with a green roof in just one day!

Green roofs are incredibly versatile and beneficial to any garden. This guide on how to fit a green roof guide will show you how easy it is to green up your back garden shed. What has caused the increasing popularity of green roofs though?
Green roofs can slow down the flow of torrential downpours, enabling sewers to cope better. They also are super drought tolerant whilst keeping temperatures inside the building cooler. They can encourage wildlife to your garden and reduce the grey landscape of man made structures. They also increase the lifespan of your roof by reducing UV damage and reducing extreme in temperatures. There really is no drawback to a green roof. Let’s start by having a look at one of the most common forms of a green roof. The sedum green roof.
WHAT IS A SEDUM ROOF?
A sedum room is an area of roof that’s been prepared to house a layer of substrate and then a matt or blanket of sedum. Sedum is incredibly resilient and low maintenance and an excellent choice for a low maintenance green roof.
This guide shows you how to fit a green roof to a shed. If you want to fit a green roof to your house or garage it is always recommended that you take specialist advice as drainage and specific protective layers may be required that are usually out of the skills of most common gardeners! This sedum green roof and its components for my video guide were supplied by Green Roofs Direct. They are one of the only suppliers to be fully carbon neutral, cut their Sedum rolls only when ordered and also offer sea hardened Sedum. They really are the top dogs of green roof supplies!
When fitting a green roof to a shed make sure that your shed roof can take the increased weight load from a green roof. It is always best when buying a shed for this purpose to go for a reinforced shed. Alternatively, you can reinforce and brace the internal shed structure and roofing joists before fitting.
1.BUILD THE TANALISED WOODEN ROOF FRAME
You will need to build a tanalised wooden frame to your existing shed roof. In this example, I have used a pent shed roof, rather than an apex, which is easier to demonstrate on. Build the frame so it provides a 3cm lip around the roof felt for the substrate and sedum blanket to be placed into. Leave the front lip (lowest part of the roof) off until you’ve fitted the water proof membrane.
3. FIX A WATER PROOF MEMBRANE TO THE SHED ROOF
Once the frame is attached measure and cut to size a water proof membrane or piece of pond liner. This is used to then attach inside the frame to make the existing felt roof completely water tight. Use a heavy duty staple gun to carefully attach the water proof membrane to the inside of the frame creating a water proof frame within the frame. This means that the water that filters through the sedum can drain quickly. If not the damp Sedum in bad weather can sit wet on the felt and cause it to degrade quickly. Use a staple gun to carefully attach this.
4. ADD A LAYER OF PROTECTIVE FLEECE TO THE GREEN ROOF
Then cut the same size in protective sedum fleece. This acts as a barrier for the sedum as it grows and its roots spread to form a mat. It;s impermeable to the roots and again helps protect both the roof and the sedum.
5. ADD A LAYER OF GROWING SUBSTRATE
Spread out a 2cm layer of growing substrate. The growing substrate should be low in nutrients, absolutely no compost or top soil. It should be made out of inert crushed rock, sand and grit so it is free draining.
6. LAY YOUR SEDUM BLANKETS
Cut to size your sedum blankets. Water them before you install and then lift and unroll them on the roof. Ensure all joints are butted up tightly. This example uses Sedum album also known as White stonecrop. It’s a little like laying turf, you can see my guide for that here!
Your green roof should bring you many years of lush green coverage.

I love Garden Ninja. He’s so clear & his enthusiasm is infectious. He inspires (me to garden for the first time in my life, never before). I am getting a shed built with a reinforced roof in hope, but with 1 reservation. My neighbour has a gigantic by-fence sycamore that causes saplings all over my garden. Wouldn’t such saplings’ roots puncture the green roof membrane? Can this be prevented? How?
@Gardenninja
@Gardenninja Год назад
Hey Wem! Thanks so much for the positive kind words about my work. I’m passionate about teaching garden design and garden skills. Ok. Well the good news is that sedum only needs a shallow growing medium. Probably not enough for a sapling to really root in. Also if the sedum is tightly meshed and healthy they should probably prevent too much damage with the sycamore seeds. They’ve got a deep taprooot you see. I doubt they could puncture the membrane really as there won’t be enough nutrition or purchase I wouldn’t imagine. If they do though you should be able to once a year get a ladder and some tongues and pull em out. I doubt they would take though but you never know. Don’t let it stop your plans. Let me know how you get on! 🥷🌿🤘

Can you use standard garden fleece or is this a specific fleece that should be bought from a specialist? Thank you!
@Gardenninja
@Gardenninja 4 года назад
You could use standard fleece as a second liner. The really important thing is to put a water proof liner under the Sedum so it doesn’t just drip through your roof. Every other layer is to help with drainage which is key to keeping Sedum happy. Hope that helps. Happy Gardening!

Thanks for the advice - if you wanted to do a wildflower style green roof, would the substrate need to be modified?
@Gardenninja
@Gardenninja 6 лет назад
J glad you found the advice useful. You would need a slightly different sub state system. Wild flowers like poor soil but would need a deeper rooting system compared to sedum. If not they may fail to establish or collapse as they need a deeper growing media. You’d also need to consider access to be able to weed and maintenance with wild flowers compared to Sedum. Still dooable though! So have a go! Let me know how it goes. Lee

@aliceharrison8920 5 лет назад
Could you do similar but have like meadow flowers growing out of it? I live on a former industrial estate and not really seeing a lot of wildlife, I thought having maybe meadow flowers growing from my shed roof might encourage bees and other insects to come?
@Gardenninja
@Gardenninja 5 лет назад
Hey Alice, Yes you could do it with wildflower meadow turf. The only difference would be not to feed the turf as wildflowers like very nutrient poor soil. It would need more watering than sedum though so bear that in mind, The substrate layers would be the same though. Do let me know how you get on with it! Happy Gardening!

Very helpful video! I am.looking t do this on my car port roof. Two questions: what is the maximum slope for the substrate? Also, what do you do to provide drainage to the green roof? Thanks.
@Gardenninja
@Gardenninja 5 лет назад
Hi Rachna. I would say the maximum you could go for is 45 degrees anything else and it may start to slip or migrate. In the video I’ve left a gap between the bottom of the tray and the roof. Excess water then runs out on this gap into the ground. You could also fit a gutter under this gap to collect and divert rainwater. Hope that helps! Lee

Nice video but I would be interested what kind of mi of substrate it is. Vermiculite or perlite etc? Also I am wondering how the water drains off the roof.
@Gardenninja
@Gardenninja 4 года назад
Hi Healthy. There’s drainage holes drilled into the lower lip of the tray where excess water can escape from. The substrate is neither perlite or vermiculite but an inert rock and porous gravel system. You can find this online searching for sedum green roof substrate. Its just to act as a light rooting layer and free draining base. Soil is too rich and heavy for a standard green roof. Hope that helps!! Happy gardening!

Hi! Great video! I don't know much about Green roofs, but am about to replace my 4x3 m front lawn with new turf and was thinking of recycling the old turf. Unfortunately it has suffered from very poor drainage, being in a damp and shady location, and is covered with a lot of dog lichen and moss. Would it be possible to utilise this on my shed roof or is sedum planting the only way to go?
@Gardenninja
@Gardenninja 6 лет назад
ED16 ED17 thanks for the comment! The issue you’ll have with missy turf if that it will need substantially more nutrients and moisture than say Sedum. Green roofs can become really heavy which is why a light free draining material is required. I have seen say a garage tiled roof partially covered in moss and lichen. I’d be concerned on a wooden structure your turf maybe too heavy especially when wet. You’ll also create a 24/7 fast food chain-for insects from the sedum which flowers than say moss which birds may just extract for bedding! Hope that helps! Good luck! Lee

Step 1 must be to reinforce the shed. A shiplap shed from a DIY store will not take the weight and this is potentially dangerous without an additional warning. The instructions for DIY sheds generally advise that the roof is not strong enough to stand on, and even a small green roof weighs a lot more than a person. Consider that each bag of sand/grit is 25kg when dry. So just three bags will weigh as much as a person. Rain and snow will make it considerably heavier. Be safe :)
@Gardenninja
@Gardenninja 6 лет назад
Mark E if I were using a DIY store shed which is shiplap then yes it would need reinforcing. However, this is a reinforced tonge and groove shed. You can see from the video it’s not shiplap or from a DIY store. Its got extra strength internal braces. So absolutely not danger but thanks for pointing out about cheaper or old sheds will need modifying. Reinforce before you fit. Happy gardening!
@sianscountrylife4925
@sianscountrylife4925 5 лет назад
I have been considering this as a project and your clearly explained video is great ...what's stopped me is the reinforcement. ..I have a sloping roof - 8 x 10 and I'm not sure how to go about making it strong enough ..
@Gardenninja
@Gardenninja 5 лет назад
I added an internal brace ie braces inside the shed tor to the main frame of the roof. Think of it as extra beams from side to side. To distribute the load. I started with a reinforced shed. Then added some extra beams inside. If you’re shed is any way wobbly then I’d make sure you really spend the time reinforcing it. So it’s totally sound But a green roof can go on any stable structure! Good luck and let me know how you get on!

bare in mind there is a difference between concentrated and distributed load, this sedum is distributed across the whole roof whereas a person standing would concentrate it in a small area

Hi Fariba. It’s on the front lip. I explain this when I got the lower front lip that there’s a gap for drainage. It maybe clearer on my accompanying blog article which you can read here with photos of the various steps! Happy gardening. Lee www.gardenninja.co.uk/green-roof-shed-installation/
