He was a musical genius!!! I grew up listening to his music along with others from the sixties (I was born in the late seventies). One of the highlights of my life is that I met Jan after a concert in TN when I was just eight or nine years old. I still have his autograph and a picture, which I treasure. He was such a role model, too. He overcame a huge setback, and was able to still make a difference in the world.
Awesome! Brings back memories, and stories that Jan told us. He was an incredible guy. We sure miss him a lot. Dean was responsible for helping Jan to get better. We sure loved going to their concerts, now we try and get to concerts that Dean does. It's a little hard now because we live in Texas now instead of California. We went to Jan's memorial service. It was very touching, lots of people there. We have a 1960 Studebaker Woody Wagon that we have as a tribute to Jan. Such good music!
Jan & Dean belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They created a culture that went beyond music. They helped to create that California surf sound the Beach Boys are best known for. Jan & Dean had a number of hits and countless fans. Their music was good, clean and fun. There was even a movie about them. Yes, they belong in the Hall of Fame. To not have them in is a shame. I met Jan and got his autograph on an original album I bought when it came out, unfortunately never got deans to go with it. I sure did enjoy their music.
It is fantastic to see this interview from 1980 or 1981... (close)... the pictures from this interview were on the cover released with the video of "One Last Ride"...which was the video from Jan & Dean's release of the live comeback album "One Summer Night Live" by Rhino!!! LOVE it!
Wow! I only knew Jill Gibson as the girl who briefly replaced Michelle Phillips in The Mamas & The Papas when John had kicked her out of the group. Wasn't she Lou Adler's girlfriend? I have this song on a Jan & Dean compilation album. She sure was pretty. I met Jan after a concert in 1994. He was so awesome...a very nice man.
This is true, heard the same explanation from Jim Rush, bass player with "Papa Doo Run Run", who were Jan & Dean's backup band for many years after their comeback. I was at the concert in 1973 at the Hollywood Palladium where the "lipsynch incident" occurred, although at that time I didn't know it was meant as a joke.
Actually, the lipsync incident did occur in real life, and Jan & Dean were boo-ed off stage like in the movie. However, the way it was shown in the movie wasn't exactly how it really happened. The tape player didn't really break. According to Dean, the skipping tape was actually planned as a joke, to replicate incidents that use to happen on televsion appearances. (No one understood the joke). The bottom line either way was that the crowd realized J&D were lipsyncing, and they weren't happy!
Just took the book out of the library. I see that Greene has some other books ( e.g. All Summer long, etc..). Wonder if they are about the Beach Boys. ?
Bob greene has written a really great book about traveling with Jan and Dean, although I think he glosses over Jan a bit more than necessary. In truth, the book is really about his interpretation of playing with the group for many years and not strickly about Jan. Read it, it's good.
Does anyone know if the Lip Sync incident at the end of Dead Mans Curve was real, or was it done only for the movie. I have not seen any refer to it other than the movie
