These guys went through a lot especially Jan. This was an excellent movie and I am glad I got a chance to get to know their story. God bless Jan and Dean !
I remember when Jan had his accident. It was all over the news. Then they dropped off the charts. No one knew what happened to them until this movie came out. Jan for what it's worth, your fans are still out there
I was 6 years old when this movie came out, but I remember it so vividly. I did have the pleasure of seeing Jan & Dean live about ten years ago. What a great comeback story! RIP Jan, you are missed.
Jan and Dean deserve to be in the R&R Hall of Fame, period.... Their body of work speaks for itself.... I don't know who calls the shoots at the Hall, but the current crop is daft, pure and simple.... These guys are legendary, they were a HUGE part of the 60s... Wake up guys, and get them inducted!!!!
I have loved this movie all my life loved the music from the original artists I am 36 years old but as a 7 year old watching this for the first time taught me that with the will there is a way ALWAYS AND FOREVER💜 FROM NM
Ditto. I’m 51 with 5 older siblings. They sat me down to watch the movie. That was my intro into Jan and dean. I had the everything from Jan and dean to the Beatles to led zeppelin and the stones from the cradle thanks to my older siblings. I can’t thank them enough.
Me too, watched it 8 times in total, partly because I love their music and partly because I was in love with Richard Hatch since Battlestar Galactica 😍😍
I saw this when it 1st aired. I had always been a fan. Little did I know it would start me on a journey that lasted until the end. I saw them on tour more times than I can count. I was lucky enough to get to know them both. It was the best times of my life. Thanks to them both for yrs. of fun, sun, song and just plain joy!💝
This is a great movie about two guys who had it all, then lost it and then got it back. It is a story about love and tragedy. It is about real music and life. It is about Jan & Dean. George Vreeland Hill
I saw this movie when it first was on tv in 1978, I was almost 17. I taped it when it was on tv a couple years later, and then bought the VHS. I cant begin to count the times I've watched it over the years. It's one of my favorite movies ever. When it gets to this part, i get tears in my eyes, then I get mad at the audience and feel like punching them in the nose! Gets me "right there" when they sing without the music and Jan chokes up😢. I'm glad it turns into a happy ending. I didnt know the real Jan was in the audience. I never heard of Papa Doo Run Run, who were also in the movie(Ive just in this last year learned to find stuff on RU-vid)Richard Hatch and Bruce Davison were both great. Nope, they don't make movies like this anymore. One of the greatest come-back stories there is.
This clip is so special...i agree.....but the fact that this was a point that brought about Jan and Dean's Phase II of their career....it's amazing and glorious. I wish that the tv interview Jan and Dean gave on the Mike Douglas show some months after they actually started touring again ....October of 1978...would be posted on here. It's sooo moving and wonderful. Jan talks about his experience....and there aren't any words to describe the admiration it evokes for him....and Dean.
The casting was phenomenal! I got to know Jan and Dean within a few years of this movie. Richard and Bruce nailed their personalities to a "t". Especially Richard. He had Jan's mannerisms down pat. There was a look Jan had in his eyes that Richard covered so well it was almost scary. So sadly missed are they both.Jan is in the audience(as are his parents) in the comeback scene.
I seen this when I was just a kid. I remember all of us kids watching it and when it got to this part of the movie there wasn't a dry eye in the place. Even so it's just a movie, still the emotional connection was there. When the crowd was booing and you see that man onstage visably upset and struggling to talk it makes you feel like you could whip that entire crowd all by yourself just to defend that man and you would do it without thought or care of harm to yourself.
Rest in peace Richard, you will missed by so many, not just from this film but being in The Waltons, Streets of San Francisco and the best of all Battlestar Galactica The Original Apollo and then the remake.
This must be like every performers nightmare. I saw this movie on tv so many years ago. I choked up then (and I wasn't even out of my teens) just like I'm choking up now. Grown up a little bit more and I can relate to Dean's struggles a bit more. And if Richard Hatch didn't get to you somewhere deep down you have a heart of stone. Hope he's somewhere warm and sunny and the surf's up. Surf or die. PEACE
I just watched this again after several months. Still gets me 'right there'. 'Dean' looked like he wanted to be anywhere but there, then he followed 'Jan's' lead.........goosebumps ! Great job Richard Hatch and Bruce Davison . RIP Jan and Richard
Richard Hatch passed away today. This is the movie I always associate with him. When I was a kid I loved J & D and I thought this was great movie. RIP Richard.
I remember hearing in an interview with Dean, that it didn't happen exactly the same way in real life. In reality, they purposely made the tape sound like a record skipping, just as a joke to add a little humor into their show. However, the movie producers felt it was too complicated to explain what really happened so they altered the story slightly. The overall point was still made though. Jan & Dean did lipsynch, the crowd did realize it was lipsynched, and they did boo Jan & Dean. Good scene!
Jan & Dean belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They had many hits, fans and helped to create sounds that were legendary. J&D and the Beach Boys created the California surf sound that helped to define the 1960's. I shake my head at some of the acts already in the Hall. Many did not do half of what Jan & Dean did. George Vreeland Hill
I saw J and D with the Beach Boys as main act and McQuinn Clark and Hillman all in one concert in 1978. J and D were absolutely charming. the large outdoor crowd knew Jan was a walking miracle and gave him a standing ovation when he walked out on stage with Dean,, and most never f-ing sat back down until they were through. total respect. About 50,000 people.
Remembered watch’n this movie, when I was 11…It left an “indelible mark” on me, cause I had the original “Batman album” with alot of Jan & Dean’s songs on it & listened to it ad nauseam @ that age!! Wished I still had that album!!! 😩
I got to see my boyhood idols in Pittsburgh in 2000. I talked at ease with Dean before the concert , but Jan was really out of it at that time. Still , what great memories
I remember this movie! WOW!!! Last time I saw it on late late nite tv and they cut the crap out of it! My brother and I used to lyp-synch to them. I was always Dean - boo hoo. Would love to see this uncut! Thanx for sharing. Kudos to Apollo (Richard Hatch) and Bruce Davidson.
I use to watch this when i was a kid, really do not remember what age i was but i use to sit in front of the tv and was in awe through out the movie. I use to have the tapes but some peeps stole them :/!!!
On this day in 1964 {May 16th} Jan and Dean performed this song on the late Dick Clark's American Bandstand... Two months earlier on March 7th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100; eventually it peaked at #8 and spent 14 weeks in the Top 100... The B-sided also charted, "The New Girl In School", it reached #37... Sadly; Jan Berry passed away on March 26th, 2004 at the age of 62... R.I.P. Mr. Barry and Mr. Clark...
Mother was an extra in the audiance Nov 1977 ..she got a double Beatles Album and Richard Hatch and others signatures were in the LP..I have the video film. I could have been there.
I remember growing up with their music. I was 10 when Jan had his accident. This is our history and isn't that what the R&R HOF is supposed to be about ! Get your @#$% together and induct them.
My dear old friends , Jan & Dean . May history be kind to them and shame , shame on the Rock and Roll HALL OF SHAME for not inducting them . WHAT A JOKE!
Like that was the first time ever that a backing track was used in a show. if this scene is anything like what happened in real life, the audience doesn't deserve any further effort.
I saw this CBS TV movie as a six year old, 2/4/78. Jan Berry has been given the shaft compared to Brian Wilson. Brian Wilson co-wrote "Surf City". I didn't know that in 1978. If it wasn't for Jan Berry's push to force Brian Wilson to become confident with his songwriting, and music production, there is no Pet Sounds.
I saw this back then, a little older than you at the time. Sad that neither Richard Hatch nor Jan Berry is no longer with us, but Richard Hatch and Bruce Davison were THE people for this film. Stay safe, and may God go with you.
On this date in 1964 {Mar. 7th} "Dead Man's Curve" entered Billboard's Top 100 chart; eventually it would peaked at #8 and spent 14 weeks in the Top 100... Ranked 28th on Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 Singles of 1964 chart... Inspired by the actual dead man's curve on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, CA The B-side of this record also charted; "The New Girl In School", peaked at #37... Used as the title of the 1978 made for TV movie about Jan & Dean...
+Bonnie Myers It was the first movie to ever portray the real life stories of any rock artist. The Buddy Holly Story, which many mistakenly claim to be the first, was actually released 6 months later.
Yes, it really did happen like this. I was there in the audience. Jim Pewter, a radio deejay, put on this show and produced it, as the "Surfer's Stomp Reunion Show" and it was at the Hollywood Palladium Auditorium in late summer of 1973. I went backstage after the show. You can buy a DVD of this movie from Video Beat.
