BMW R 100 S (MY 1976) front fork assembly. These nice old forks are pretty easy to maintain compared to newer forks and I really enjoyed to put this old piece of art together.
Subscribe to follow the mission of assembling this great piece of history. It is a huge project because someone else disassembled the bike 20 years ago and I got it in pieces.

To enter the damper rod with rings in the tube, use a drink-can-made-slider-funnel, it works great and you don't need expensive BMW materials. To slide the tube into the outer tube, go from the other side, this way the rounded top slides easy trough the slider sealing.

Thanks for this super clear tutorial. Today I overhauled my forks too following your instructions and it was really a piece of cake. Before watching this video I thought it was quite complicated, and it looks like that, but if you follow the step by step approach it’s done in an hour or two. Vielen Dank!

It's amazing how easy to service this old fork is. Yet the setup inside is not far from modern forks, the Monocle says. I hope you enjoy and learn something from the video.

At 7:47 the rubber buffer is going in upside down. Try it the other way, it fits much more naturally.

Thanks for the fork anatomy demonstration. I have never done this, but what about the length of the springs? they settle over time, often differently, and might cause imbalance and flutter in the worst case. And which direction did you put the damper holes? I think they should point sideways (outward).

I didn't measure the length of the springs but you are right, this should be done and after so many years they may need to be replaced. My bike won't be ridden mich so that's not a big issue, although the front feels way too soft.

@@bikedogtor1663 There is a RU-vid channel called "Brooks Airhead Garage" with a couple of videos with fork assembly. In one he mentions a cheap BMW tool that guides the three small rings into place. In the other he mentions an update from Race Tech that improves the dampening so that reacts better during fast curves (nice to have the wheel stay on the ground through bumps). He is generally very thorough. Another good RU-vid channel is boxer2valve, but maybe you know all this already.

Ich hätte noch eine Frage. Müssen die Bohrungen im Standrohr, die man bei Minute 5:11 sehen kann,beim Einbau eine genaue Position haben? LG Gerhard
