For today’s easy buttercream flower piping tutorial I will show you how to pipe a basic five petal flower using a curved petal tip. These easy icing flowers are the perfect decoration for floral cakes or flower cupcakes! These buttercream flowers can be piped using any size of curved petal tip (in this tutorial I am using a medium curved petal tips and my buttercream flowers are approximately 1.5” in diameter). I have included my “perfect flower piping” buttercream recipe and detailed written piping instructions for these five petal flowers below!
Buttercream Recipe: (Video: • Easy American buttercr... )
Ingredients
1/2 Cup butter softened to room temperature 113g
2 Cups powdered sugar 200g
1 Teaspoon vanilla extract 4g
1-2 Tablespoons milk 15-30g
Directions:
In a large bowl if using a hand mixer or in the bowl of your stand mixer cream butter on medium low speed for 2-3 minutes or until fluffy and pale in colour. Add 1/2 of the powdered sugar and mix for 2 minutes. Add remaining powdered sugar and mix for another 2 minutes. Your buttercream should be fluffy, pale and thick at this point. Add vanilla and 1 tablespoon of milk. Mix well. If the buttercream is still too thick/stiff add another tablespoon of milk and continue mixing. You will want a medium consistency buttercream to pipe your flowers with! For my flowers I used a small amount of Wilton gel food colouring in creamy peach for the darker colour, and then added a small dab of the peach frosting into some white to create the lighter shade.
Buttercream flower piping instructions:
To begin use a small amount of buttercream to attach a square of parchment paper to a flower nail. These flowers can also be piped directly onto your flower cakes or floral cupcakes. Holding your curved petal tip with the wide end near the center of your flower nail and the narrow end facing out apply pressure while turning and pull out towards the outer edge of the flower nail. Continue turning and pull back to the starting point, release pressure and sharply pull away to form the first petal. Pipe the second petal touching the first but not overlapping. Try to make the petals as even as possible. When you pipe the final petal, lift the tip up slightly as you come back into your starting to point to ensure that you do not drag your piping tip through the first petal.
To add a center I like to use a large round sprinkle, alternately you can finish off the center of these buttercream flowers using a round (or even a star) tip and a contrasting colour. That is how easy it is to pipe a 5 petal flower using a curved petal tip!
To make six, seven or even eight petal flowers using this same tip, you would just need to create a more narrow petal. If you have any questions let me know down below!
