I came across this video for inspiration to try out on a smaller scale for my kids' school bus shelter at the end of our long driveway. Any suggestions and/or recommendations that you may be able to offer this single mama building this alone would be much appreciated.

Still Iraise I perceive this to be doable only if the ground is relatively level and solid (or concrete/asphalt). I can picture some all terrain tires if you were to move this across dirt; however, if there was mud, I’d imagine the sheer weight would have the tire (or all the tires), sink. If I had a concrete slab I’d definitely at least attempt this. Maybe another you tuber could. Best of luck. Subscribe for more diy videos!

I love doing doing diy projects, and I've been building a custom carport for a bit now, had it done, was gonna do so little things to improve it, but had a crazy storm the other night and one of the 2 sections collapsed, do you have any tips or knowledge that may help out?
@CottoDIY
@CottoDIY 3 года назад
I would use pressure treated wood, exterior lag structural screws, and galvanized hurricane straps. All these can be found at Home Depot or Lowe’s. If you don’t use exterior structural screws, it might hold for a while but will eventually rust and snap. Same with non treated wood, it will weather and become weak. The biggest tip might be the hurricane straps. This should reduce twisting. Also, what I don’t have on my carport are angle brackets. This might also reduce twisting. Hope this helps. Subscribe for more diy videos.
@trikafy
@trikafy 3 года назад
Thanks brotha! That helps tremendously and I looked at the damage from the storm, it actually snapped a single 2x4 in 3 different sections and hence why one part of the carport failed
@christophermhudson09
@christophermhudson09 3 года назад
I'm pretty sure those "lag bolts" were actually interior cabinet screws....the come in a clear container that's kind of rectangular with a slanted bottom edge and are made by GRK or something like it.....I'm curious to know how well they're holding up as of today, I've always thought they had a lot more strength than for just cabinets
@CottoDIY
@CottoDIY 3 года назад
Are you referring to they T25 bolts that are holding up he 2x6x16? Or the screws for the 2x4’s?
@christophermhudson09
@christophermhudson09 3 года назад
At 2:26 when the camera raises up and you point at the 2x4s... At 3:05 you get a good close look at them... The ones you showed later on that have a nuts and washer on the end of them are lag bolts for sure.
@CottoDIY
@CottoDIY 3 года назад
@@christophermhudson09 I think you are pointing out the outdoor screws I used to hold the 2x6’s in place before I used the lag bolts. The 2x4’a also had the outdoor screws put through them, however, they are not structure screws and one did snap when I ran into it with the lawn mower.

If you already had hurricane force winds , it ought to be ok, but you could get those red anchors they sell at tractor supply and screw them down at each leg and then tie off to ground with some metal cable rope adding those adjustable tension bolt things to each as well, so if they get loose, you can simply tighten the tensioners.. they sell those red crew in anchors in many lengths I think up to 3 or 4 ft long. How about a uv resistant marine grade thin rubber back carpet tacked down for a roof? Idk? ...maybe in white to reflect the heat? Idk? Maybe some more 2x4 to roof structure too? Idk?

I need to make something like that for my big 5th wheel camper and am wondering how I make it like yours except twice as wide and three times as long and twice as tall cause my camper is 36 feet long and has two slide outs and is probably at most 13.5 feet tall but I have not measured the height yet. Any advice on what materials to buy and where to buy? I'm waiting for your reply. Thank you!
@CottoDIY
@CottoDIY Год назад
Something that tall you would need to hire a contractor or buy a 5th wheel camper metal carport. You would want 6x6x20 or 8x8x20 vertical timbers for starters. Honestly, I don’t think that’s a feasible diy project. All that weight, plus the roofing, I wouldn’t attempt that project without an engineer or contractor.

@@CottoDIY Yeah a metal RV or Pole Barn would be best but where do I buy or who sells 6x6x20 or 8x8x20 vertical timber? @@CottoDIY thanks man. I more meant the tarp on the roof for longevity. The rest looked solid. I’m looking to build something like this to work on my Motorcycle under
@CottoDIY
@CottoDIY 3 года назад
@@ablaze3717 oh, the tarp is a no go. Go with metal or plastic if you can. The tarp ripped because of water buildup and then it tore up in a hurricane.
@ablaze3717
@ablaze3717 3 года назад
@@CottoDIY that’s what I figured. Anytime I used tarp it was temporary cuz the water build up. But I’m gonna go with metal I can get from work for the roof…. I’ve built 3-4 quick carports and additions to sheds but they ALWAYS have roof issues. Ive used tar Paper twice over sheeting and then used rolled roofing for the last two. Thanks for the input mate

Can it handle hail
@CottoDIY
@CottoDIY 3 года назад
Thanks for watching! No it cannot handle hail. The tarp roof ripped during a hurricane last year, someone mentioned poking holes to allow rain water through. I’m looking for an alternative roof now, maybe metal. Subscribe for updates or more diy videos.

Could you have put some ply board up top then the tarp?
@CottoDIY
@CottoDIY 2 года назад
Yes, I suppose you could. The reason I didn’t is because I had my mind set on a tin roof. If you put plywood down; then a tarp, make sure you have hurricane straps on each 2x4, on each side of the 2x4. Check out other build designs too, there may be a measurement spacing to place each 2x4.

I have yet to install a roof on it. The tarp ripped off in a hurricane but the lag screws are rated for structures so I would presume so, as long as the roof is installed correctly. I’m planning on doing a metal roof and will update with a video.

Probably not very long, that tarp would have deteriorated in the sunlight. Not meant for a permanent install like that. Tarps are meant to be used and put away.

They are 4x4x8. With these stakes, they don’t enter the ground which is why the building is taller.
