In this video we take a look at a country classic, Jolene by Dolly Parton. It's an easy bass line to learn and a great way to build your country music repertoire. That said, it uses roots and fifths on the bass but requires the knowledge of the chord progression and the nuances of country bass playing.

I enjoyed learning this lesson, and I want to learn more about the music and funky riffs I can do with my bass guitar.🌿 😊

As a former classical guitar teacher, I would recommend that you get that neck up at a little steeper angle so the right hand wrist is a little less bent. This will also help the left hand as well. I know that you probably will want to play bass into your old age and a bent wrists can cut a bassist career in half. BTW, great video. I like the fact that you emphasize the musical idea of not repeating the root on the first note of the chord change. Another bit of advice. Tell your students to learn how to sing both lead and harmony. It well double their income.

Thank you, Ryan! I've recently gone from playing punk/metal/hardcore bass for 25 years to an alt country style bass, and lessons like these help me understand the simple intricacies of country bass. PS, saw you recently with Jenny Lewis, and you ruled.

Hi Ryan. Great lesson as usual. Can you sometime go over how you're recording your bass. Are you miking your cabs or just directly into an interface with a plugin. That type of thing. Your bass sounds great! I can see it's a Lull which is cool. I have a Lull M4V that is super cool.

Thanks! I will do a video on that sometime but the short answer is that I’m using the head as a DI and going through an interface. No cab/mic involved for the bass tone. Hope that helps!
