In this video we take a look at how I use a custom support plugin in Cura to allow me to place supports only where I need them. This is such an awesome plugin that is very handy for times when Cura is not able to create supports exactly how you want them. After you watch this video you will be off and creating custom supports of your own!

when i look up the plug in in the latest version of CURA it doesn't show up.

You can also change the support angle. If you increase the angle closer to 90 degrees the support will only form under angles that are greater than that number. This custom support plug in is also a good tool to have for some situations

You can also turn up the support required angle- in the video you have it set to 45°, you could set it a little higher.

This is probably one of the most usefull videos. I never realized to go to the marketplace to look for add ons like this that are ultra helpful. Just an idea for ya, you should do a video dedicated to marketplace add-ons that are handy to have. I never would have known this existed and I'm sure theres alot of others who don't either. If theres any add-ons you advise I'd love to know about em. Great video man

If I’m correct you don’t have to scale the box that big. For my test cura generated supports all the way down even if I only put one little block

The same app is available in the Creality Slicer, thank goodness. I have a Creality printer, so learned using the Creality Slicer, so this was extremely helpful. I just printed my 3rd figure and spent 30 minutes trying to take off all the "everywhere" supports and ended up damaging one arm and even tearing the figure off it's base. With the cylindrical supports, I have been able to eliminate 90% of the supports and all of the ones under the legs that were so hard to get out!

Thanks for the video! One thing I am struggling with regarding supports is the connection between the support and the workpiece. Either they are fused together so the removing the supports leaves an ugly underside, or they are so far apart that you wonder what the support is supporting at all.

So I print the little Groku statue that is on Thingverse and it had supports built in the gcode file. My brand new CR10 pro v2 ( my first 3d printer) printed what I assumed were the bases for the supports, but the somewhere during the print, the supports just turned to strings spewed out of the nozzle. Thankfully the small statue still printed fine without the aid of the supports, but I'm concerned for the nest time I actually need them. Any thoughts?
@radiovan7
@radiovan7 Год назад
Custom supports are very useful. I have some models that require printing cylinders on their sides. It's still challenging to get a good result and drilling out the supports is a pain. I'm using 10% infill for the supports. I'm using an FDM printer and it appears that a resin printer would still have the same issue with supports. A IDEX printer with water soluble supports might be the best choice.

Excellent informative video! Very valuable information. Thank you. If you could do a similar video on using tree supports, it would be great as well. I wondered if you need to do the same thing with tree supports where you state that you check 'generate supports' adjust the setting then un-check it before printing.

try tree supports - i think they are still experimental in cura but in this case the supports could have started at the buildplatform. it has the same issues with regular supports though - you need blockers. But it's also easier to remove.
@Guardian_Arias

I like ideamaker more when it comes to that. You can auto gen supports before you slice and then delete them where its unnecessary or add a few more custom supports in a similar fashion. Then you slice it

This functionality is also essentially native in cura. Click the model to add a support blocker. Then select the support blocker and select print as support. The outcome is identical to the process in this video.
@maximthemagnificent

You can also make a support blocker enable supports for the area where it overlaps the model, which might be preferable in some cases.
