Today we finally start in on this new backyard. And what better way than with a super laxed DIY deck. Fast , cheap and easy but still great!
we use pressure treated lumber for the frame, GRK R4 screws for the fasteners and Tuff Block for the foundation.

I used your video to build a deck to extend my front porch. Your method, deck screws and the TuffBlocks. It was amazed at the results. Its only a 4Ft x 8ft deck but it came together in about 4 hrs from driving to buy materials to completion. I used 4'x8' exterior plywood for the deck surface. I'll paint with porch paint.

Whenever I lose a tape measure I punish myself by going without until I feel I’ve learned my lesson. Never works and I’m currently measuring tapeless in my work pouch. Next step I’ll grab one of the ones I don’t really like but have lots of from my shed or basement or junk drawer. Then when I feel like, this time I finally learned my lesson! I’ll buy the expensive one I actually like. Should be due to purchase the good tape measure in 2-3 weeks.

I built this same design deck in a 12 X 16 size close to our 6Ft fence. Now every time we use it, we have an unexpected view and vice versa of the neighbor's. Kind of uncomfortable to be watched while having a cookout. If we ever sell our house, I hope the buyer doesn't notice their cluttered back yard.

Are these beams strong enough for that deck? I usually see doubled-up 2xs for beams. And could you go with taller beams and joists? I'm building a 12 x 12 deck with a similar structure but need a little more height so I was thinking of using 2x8s for the joists and beams.

Loved the video! 1 question and 1 suggestion: do y'all use joist hangers for unattached/floating decks? Suggestion: in editing, turn the volume way down for the cutting or drilling segments when you aren't talking. Trying to watch these at night with MY BOSS asleep beside me means my finger gets cramps trying to turn the volume down for noise but up for commentary. Can't wait to see the rest of this transformation. Thanks for all the free tips!

Most demonstrations of the use of the Tuffblock showed it being set into the soil a bit with a tamped down layer of compacting gravel type. Why did you just set it on top of the weed mat? Or were you just building the frame on top of it, then remove it and later position the tuffblocks into the soil?

@@woodbullyltd I guess if the load is heavy enough it shouldn't move. I still wouldn't want to test it out. Might also be dependent on soil type, slope and climatic conditions. I suspect that if you live in a very dry climate with very little rain to soften the soil, it might be OK. Not so much in the tropics or sub-tropics that are blessed with a lot of rain. Let us know how it went in five years time.
