Look like part number 12103 and not 12098? Yours didn’t have the bolts to adjust width? Couldn’t you fill the tube with epoxy in areas where wind is a concern. I know you loose adjustability. The company would be smart to thread the base then use the nut to lock into to position creating an actual connection to the ground. Nice idea but don’t know how it meets code

Three important mistakes: 1. The flashing where it meets up at the butt joint on the ledger needs to be caulked. Water will penetrate at the butt joint and eventually rot out. 2. He tore the tar paper near the downspout. That should have been repaired. 3 Finally and most critically, the concrete patio is probably no more than than 3-1/2 “ thick. My jurisdiction would have required the patio cut out and a footing installed.

I like everything you do except for the lack of pre-drilling. I feel, in a situation such as this, even though a manufacturer may say it's not necessary, the importance of mitigating stress within the board outweighs the convenience and speed of driving them straight in with no pilot hole, especially in drier dimensional lumber. As you're well aware, lumber loses much of it's strength as soon as it develops a crack or split. As for the flashing, perhaps a bead of construction adhesive on the top edge of the ledger board would be effective to hold the flashing in place so the main sections don't move and the splice doesn't slide laterally from its location. Great job with your explanations; I really appreciate your ability to convey key information to the layman - a true teacher.
@johnvcougar
@johnvcougar 2 года назад
Agreed! What's with tradies and their antagonism towards pilot holes and pre-drilling? There are VERY SOUND Engineering principles to warrant drilling, so that the damn things last a whole lot longer ... wait ... there's a clue, right there. Hmmmm.

Did I miss some essential ingredient in snapping a stringline before he cut the joists to length?? The stringline was straight but how did he know it was parallel to the other end of the joists. Theoretically, you could snap a stringline that would be straight but the deck could end up a triangle.

Hate to be one of those people but those joist hangers are designed to have longer screws/nails in the 4 diagonal holes. That is so the screw/nail penetrates the joist as well as the framing member the joist is being hung on, in this case the ledger board.

I am trying to build my first 14x12 deck to extend from back of my house. But only have 12 in or 1feet height from my concrete floor so don’t have room to put a support beam. Also not sure how to install ledger over stucco wall and since i only have 12 in from the ground, first 9 in is concrete foundation of the house. Thought about freestanding deck but don’t have clearance to put supporting beam. What is my option? Also at Home Depot and Lowes only have brown treated lumber which looks too wet and sure if it is okay to sure for post and framing of a deck in LA CA. Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

If you are living in frost zone your posts need to go at least 3 feet deep in the ground, right now your posts are sitting on a concrete which is may be 6 inch thick ? ... In winter the concrete will be lifted by frost and that will lift the posts and may cause damage to the beams attached to house ? .. do you think think your posts should be at least 3 feet deep in the ground ?
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements 3 года назад
Many decks float like this . If you want it not to float your posts need to be anchored below your local frost line and even then you get some uplift most times.

This is Saskatchewan ,so we have even larger swings in seasonal temps. You will most likely get minor up and downs with seasonal lifting but should not be too severe . Great video, Shannon! I’m in the process of tackling my first deck now. One question I have is what do you do when you need to use two lengths of rim joists at the front to go the length of the deck? The deck has about a 9” overhang from the girder beam at 2x10 construction. There will be a butt joint for the rim joist but I’m not entirely sure on the proper way to do it?

Well done, Shannon, I've always liked your Canadian home style presentation. When choosing the size of the ledger board, is it fair to say you simply use the same size as your joists that tie to it at right angles? Or, are you better off choosing the same size as your beams? Regarding your selection of beam and joist size, is the Canadian wood council prescriptive guide for residential decks a good reference choice?
@HouseImprovements

Yes ledger is the same size as the joists . Your local code will dictate the sizes needed

Thank you Shannon...we have been considering a deck for about 20 years...I have received some pricey quotes over the years and you finally gave me the confidence to complete one myself...my wife wanted it big...turned out to be 24 x 16....took me several months working alone but it was well worth it! Cheers.

shouldn't the deck height be between 2 and 4 inches lower that the threshold?
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements 3 года назад
I have had a few people comment that ,even up to 12" lower. Around here we are not required to do that but maybe in some places you are. Seems like more of a tripping hazard then anything

I am assuming that the interior floor joists run parallel to the rim joist?
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements 4 года назад
The floor joist inside in this case would be parallel to the deck joists.

If I'm spanning 13ft with posts at the end and none in between how do I find out how many beams and their size and kind of wood to span that distance? Is there a chart?

Come with your question on my forum we should be able to help. We also need to know approx . area that you live and the span of the deck joists between supports

Great vid. If you want, you could just put the nuts partially on to the wedge anchor so you are actually hammering on the nut. It won't hurt the threads a bit. Thanks for doing this.

Shannon, you’re very thorough in your explanation - you’d be a great teacher. I have one observation: This family paid probably $6,000 to have a beautifully-poured concrete patio; why would they ever want to pay another several-thousand dollars to install a deck on top of it? Doesn’t make sense. They could’ve simply made a beautiful wide, decorative wood stairway up to the patio door, with a five-foot landing. Seems to me they wasted their money on the concrete patio. They could’ve simply installed a plastic membrane over the dirt, and installed landscaping rock on top of the plastic membrane in order to have a surface under the wooden deck that would quickly dry after a rain storm.

People do what people do. Actually they were having a slight water issue here and wanted to be sure water was directing away I guess. I did not do pad but it sure made a nice clean install for me! LOL.

I hope that ledger is flashed correctly or it will rot out the entire floor system. The bands and all the joists

Doing a deck refurb where they used a supporting board to secure the joists to the main ledger instead of joist hangers. It's been holding them since 1983, but guess I'll take the time to install the hangers.

Hey Thanks for your vid Shannon. Been watching your videos for some time, and they are extraordinarily helpful. Quick question: I noticed the PT lumber you are using looks different than the more brown looking PT lumber with small lines in it which you see at home depot. Is there a reason for this? The one you're using has a more "wood" look to it. What is the difference? Does the other require that liquid treatment that you put on it?

Aluminum and ACQ lumber do not mix. The copper will eat through the aluminum. I have been considering using a membrane like Resisto in there?

Question on deck board height at the door plate. Do you not want about a 2" step up or height difference for the purpose of snow and ice build up. This way melting ice or rain water does not work in under the door frame and rot the sub floor????

when ur attaching ledger board, you want to drive into the studs right? or does it matter?
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements 3 года назад
In most cases you attaching to the rim joist of the house which is a solid 2x8 ,2x10 or 2x12. If you home is newer and has an OSB thin rim board then you need to attach to the floor joists

Great instructional video - happy to find it as a DIY first time deck builder and at the framing stage. One question - since joist thickness varies from board to board, isn't it good to let them all rest on the beam, attach the rim joist, and then work out the varying thicknesses on top using a planer or belt sander?
