Omg thank you! I just got home with a piece of wood that I've been dying to paint & didn't realize that only using straight acrylic paint would cause it to just bleed through the wood. So quick trip to Dollar Tree & I can begin my masterpiece...lol... THANKS. 🎨🖌️🖼️

this is really close to the recipe i use! i ommit the paint, for clear, and if i need unclear i add just a dab of whatever color i need to a portain cup, with whatever amount of my clear!,

I have to admit, I don't use gesso much. I wasn't even aware you could make it clear.. but I've learned a lot about it recently! :) What uses do you have for your gessos? I'd love to hear about them! xoxo Jen
@ChristyEssen

+Jen Evers i'm pretty new to it myself, i found it on another youtubers channel, she uses marble dust, but told me i can use baby powder instead, i didnt know what it was for either, i used it on my sons notebooks for school, we tiedyed cardstock, and covered his notebooks covers, i used the gesso, as a clear coat to protect the tiedye covers and this allowed for doodling over them, i also have used on old book pages, to make them less fragile for use in crafting, and on magazine type pages to give tooth so i can write on them, my intent was to art journal, but i havent quite gotten to that very much.
@JenEvers
@JenEvers 8 лет назад
Those are excellent ideas! I never thought of using it for tooth to be able to write on things, or using it as a clear sealer.. I'll have to keep that in mind. Thank you for sharing with me!! I don't do multi media very much but once in awhile I get the bug!! xoxo Jen

+Jen Evers your welcome, i usually have no clue what the actual uses are ;). but i D.I.Y. everything i can, with my limited art budget. it has made my creativity much more free flowing not having to worry about cost, and saving for just the right project. and who can beat your project smelling like baby powder ;)

Thank you for this video. I just have one information for you: In order for the Gesso to not mold, it is necessary to add a paint based on zinc, the zinc is antifungal and prevents the development of fungi. ( mushrooms ) Excuse my english, I'm a french woman...
@JenEvers
@JenEvers 7 лет назад
Thank you so much!! I'm guessing acrylic paint has zinc? I will double check that and pass it on. What a great tip, greatly appreciated! Have a super day! xoxo Jen TFW!!

Caleche Okay so zinc... I'm thinking about making my own powder pigments to add to the gesso for diy acrylic paint. Do you think if I used rocks high in zinc, that it would be enough to keep in from molding. Thanks in advance
@sassyNot4u

I haven't had a recipe without water mold yet (although admittedly I do use mine probably more quickly than some). If you use one that has water, boil it first then let it cool a bit before mixing. That kills all bacteria and stops the mold from forming. The recipe here is so cheap that if you don't use much and can't find a zinc paint, just make a small batch and remake later when you need it again if yours molds.
@maydamcfadden3973
@maydamcfadden3973 5 лет назад
Finally the answer, to use zinc based paint white, then add a touch of another color if you want, right? Makes sense, as why trhow away more money, if you have to leave a project for a while. Another? Was, does the first usage ruin your finished product after time on a person's wall. Would hate to have one but mine and it rots.. !! Yuk.
@saadams4937

Not sure how much zinc you need for the anti-fungal effect, but you can buy baby powder that contains as much as 15% zinc. Caldesene, for one, contains 15% zinc oxide.

I wanted to share that most counties have a hazardous waste station for people to take their old paint, stains, varnish, polyurethane, primers, cleaning supplies, pool cleaners, car fluids,wall paper remover,paint thinners, grout, drywall repair paste, everything you need for dozens of DIY projects. And here's the best part... It'a all free! In my city /county you can get up to 10 items every 30 @t do have to show your ID so don't forget that. And my hazardous waste station allows 10 items per car load. So if I go with my friend , that's 10 items for both of us. Not ten each! So go by yourself or take separate cars. Just an FYI! I haven't paid for paint, mineral spirits, car oil ,most of my cleaning supplies, or pool shock for 6 years. And you all know that you can take white paint to the place you bought it( sherwin williams,Lowes, walmart etc..) and they will mix and make your desired color for you. Usually for free. Find out if there's a hazardous waste station near you. It will save you hundreds of dollars in your crafting products . Have a blessed day!

Thank you for sharing Lisa. I've never heard of such a thing. We have dumps and waste disposals, but they are drop off only. I've never heard of a place that would let you pick things up from there. I would think it would have to do with safety regulations and laws. But, if you're doing it, maybe it's available other places. I'll look into it here. Happy New Year! xoxo Jen

So Baby girl, Whats a good consistency for making this gesso? I split my Baby powder 50/50 with cornstarch.. It can be made with either one... So... Right now mine is about the same as my paints. I mix em thick and then I add water just before I start to paint. How long should I allow for dry time between coats using your receipt.? AND THANK'S FOR POSTING THIS. IT WILL SAVE MANY OF CANVASES FROM THE GRAVE YARD. I have one that dried before I could scrape it. I scraped it alright. lol... All the gesso came off along with the paint. I was left with a screen in a frame. So, this will come in handy in my future, as well as right now. Bye.

So I can use clear elmers glue ,powder ,and white acrylic paint. I don’t have much white ,cream color I have . I also have golden matte medium and liquidex pouring medium. But I’m just doing a landscape. Also need decent brushes ,but no Michaels here . I was going to order gesso for my oil painting I’m starting in May ,June , but for now ,I have acrylic paint and no gesso. You are the only person who has been helpful with what ingredients I do have . I have painted without,and the paint was ok . However I have a collage ,I think that’s the matte medium,and the pouring is for those funky ones that I don’t do. Is there a difference between oil gesso and acrylic gesso? Clives art says I can order this dry ingredient and save a fortune, just can’t find it . Thanks honey.
@JenEvers
@JenEvers 4 года назад
Hi there :) You can definitely use white glue and any color of paint if you want it tinted. I don't use gesso as a painting background since painting isn't my expertise. I use it for mixed media, collage and card making. I'd like to be more helpful but I don't do paintings and wouldn't want to steer you wrong. Depending on where you are in your art journey, this recipe could be used in place of real gesso, but I would imagine as you get really good, like most folks, you'd want to purchase a higher grade product. Good luck! xoxo Jen

@sheilamarie5059
@sheilamarie5059 3 года назад
If you bought a primed canvas at store, sure.. But if you made your own canvas(as in you just bought a canvas cloth and built its frame), it is necessary, because the paints will go through the cloth and you'll spend more paints than normal.. People do this homemade gesso because they needed a larger volume of gesso which is way cheaper for their prefered Larger sizes of canvas(which is a DIY also because it cannot be found in store). So, if you would only paint for just a while, maybe just buy the primed canvas at store.😊

@daurham

Awesome video! Thanks, but I have 1 question! I went out, measures and made this gesso. But it's a bit strange. It seems liquid, then when I go to brush it on, it starts to clump and gather a little instead of being a liquid. I watered down, but even while soaked, it's not able to hit the beautiful middle where it's just a lick liquid. It seems like a paste or like a wet silly puddy haha.
@JenEvers
@JenEvers 7 лет назад
It should be more of a liquid than a paste, and it will definitely be gritty when putting it on. It's supposed to give the paint something to adhere to (the main purpose of gesso). Making it more liquid creates a "wash" and you can color those to your intent, and making it more thick actually does produce a nice paste you could use for stenciling and creating great texture! So no matter how yours turned out, you could use it for something unique! Enjoy! xoxo Jen

Great idea! Love the savings. I wonder if switching out the scented baby powder would work w/cornstarch?! Don't see why not, same texture. Hhhmmnnn...I'm gonna try that! Thanks again! ~X🎨X~

I've seen other comments online that say corn starch isn't a good alternative, bc you need talc. Idk why. I'm still looking around and learning. I've seen Plaster of Paris or baking soda as recommended alternatives

If I omit the white acrylic (to make a clear gesso) , will the consistency change? Should I add more water or more glue?
@JenEvers
@JenEvers 4 года назад
Yes, you can definitely skip the paint, or change the color of it. Adding more water will dilute it so if it's too runny, use glue. xoxo Jen

Thank you for sharing this info. If left thick enough could it be used for modeling paste, as texture through a stencil ? The grit would not matter to me as I have been using some over 10 year old Snow-Tex. All it needed was a tad of water & is as good as all those years ago. New subbie here & lovin' it. (Felicia, Texas)
@JenEvers
@JenEvers 8 лет назад
Thanks so much Felicia! Welcome :) Yes, you can use this as texture paste as well, and it can be sanded down if it's too rough :) Adding water til it's as thin as you want for gesso too! Thanks for watching and leaving feedback. I'm appreciative! xoxo Jen

Hmmm... I would suggest making it with fabric glue and fabric paint. Although... why gesso it first? Fabric paint shouldn't need a primer

I think it works very much the same! But just so you know, I am not a professional painter. I use mine strictly for paper crafting and a dabble some in multi-media. If you are using these type of things for a luxurious oil painting or something of that sort, I might suggest getting something of more quality. To me, I'm happy with the results, and the price! xoxo Jen Happy Crafting!

Pls I am from India and very new to decoupage. I just want to know if I can use this gesso to paint on wood before decoupaging it, things like a table or a tray.
@JenEvers
@JenEvers 5 лет назад
Depends on the wood. If it's slippery and has a coating on it, I would try gesso, but I'd probably sand it first. Give it a go! If the wood isn't slippery but has a rough exterior, then I think decoupage would probably stick just fine. Good luck! xoxo Jen

SO if I wanted to make CLEAR Gesso, would I use a clear paint instead of the white paint?
@JenEvers

Try glue, cornstarch, and water, mix until you get your desired consistency. The paint gives it the opacity or color if you want that. Thanks for the question! xoxo Jen

I always wondered why you have to put in acrylic paint? is there something you could substitute for acrylic paint like mod podge?
@JenEvers
@JenEvers 7 лет назад
Here is my opinion on that Evelyn. It depends on what you need it for and if you're a professional painter or using it for crafts. Mod Podge would be the same as glue, so you'd be adding twice as much glue. The paint makes it opaque and gives it the color. You could substitute any color of paint that you had. Glue makes it stick and the powder gives it grit so the next layer has something to stick to. So.. you can make it without the paint. That would make it a translucent mod gesso :) Try different things out and never be afraid to experiment and do what works for your particular art! I love that you asked the question! Happy Crafting! xoxo Jen

Hi Jen I used a combo of baking soda, baby powder and baby wash. the consistency is smooth. it looks good so far it is drying right now. how do you keep the gesso from creating lines on the paper when you are applying it. I have tried a spatchla, an old gift card and it still leaves lines on the paper.
@JenEvers
@JenEvers 7 лет назад
I've not played with it enough to figure that out either! :) You mixed in baby wash? Like shampoo? What is going to make it stick to the paper if there's no glue or mod podge in your mixture? I'd be curious to see how it turned out! Join us at Koala T Crafts and post some photos for inspiration if you're not already there! xoxo Jen facebook.com/groups/482869948452165/

it had a smooth consistency and I did a water color painting. I used 1/4 cup baby powder, 1/4 cup baking soda, elmer's glue all (not sure how much I used) and baby wash instead of using water to thin it out. I will post.

@JenEvers

So I feel the gesso would just seep through the paper mache unless you make it really thick. I would test a spot and let it dry to see if it would A. Stay and B. not rub off, like chalk residue on things. There are probably better products for what you're wanting to achieve. Good luck, sounds cool!! xoxo Jen
